Democracy or Dictatorship
Democracy:
 A democracy must be based on a free
and fair election where those currently
in power have a fair chance of losing.
 In a democracy the final decision
making power must rest with those who
elected by the people.
 Liberty, Equality, Legal form of the
Government
Features of
Democracy:
 In a democracy, each adult citizen must
have one vote and each vote must have one
value.
 A democratic government rules within limits
sets by constitutional law and citizen’s right.
 The opposition parties are allowed to
function freely before and after the elections.
 The democratic governments are based on
fundamental principles of political equality.
Merits:
Demerits:
 Freedom to choose
the Heads
 Quality of decision
making
 Deal with differences
and conflict
 No permanent
loser/winner
 Enhances the dignity
of the citizens
 Slow
 Success or failure
depends on the voter
 Corruption
 Expensive
 Cannot meet
emergencies
 Leaders keep
changing in a
democracy. This leads
to instability.
Dictatorship :
 A dictatorship consists of rule by one
person or a group of people.
 A dictatorship is a body of government
where total control and dominance lies
with a small group of people or one
person.
 A leader takes control over the
government and has total power.
Merits:
Demerits:
 Efficient in war time
 Less Room for
Corruption
 "Things Happen"
Quickly
 No fundamental
rights
 Enemy of
international peace
 Dictatorship
spreads war and
aggression
 Force and violence
Dictatorship vs.
Democracy:
 Dictatorship is forced on
people.
 Dictator do not allow common
people to take decision.
 Dictators have absolute
powers in their hands.
Compared to monarchy, only
a single leader has all the
power in his hand. It depend
on the dictator, how he uses
the power toward the people.
 Germany , Egypt and Italy
have seen some of the world
longest dictatorial regimes.
 Democracy is preferred by
people because no decision
is forced on them.
 There are free and fair
elections.
 Election offer a choice and
fair opportunity to the people
to change the current rulers.
 USA and India are world
biggest and most healthy
democracies countries.
Conclusion:
 Democracy is a regimes whose benefits are distributed
among large number of citizens.
 Dictatorship are regimes whose beneficiaries are few in
the number.
 Democracies offer weaker incentive because the political
rents are share among many people.
 Dictatorship offer sharp incentives to their supporters
because regime insiders earn large political rents.
 As a student I believe that only educated people can bring
positive change so let promise to ourselves that we will not
tolerate any kind of injustices both are own merits and
demerits.
