2. INTRODUCTION
When it comes to deciding which form of
government is the most efficient, there is always a
debate. Democracy is the form of government which is
followed in countries like America and India. On the
other hand, China, Cuba and Zimbabwe are among the
countries which have a dictatorship form of
government. So which one is the better of the two?
What is the difference between dictatorship and
democracy?
3. Dictatorship is a form of government in which a
single individual or a group of individuals hold
power and take all the decisions pertaining to
running the country deciding what is expected of
all the citizens of the country.
Democracy is a form of government in which all
eligible citizens participate equally either directly
or through elected representatives in the proposal,
development, and creation of laws.
4. CHARACTERISTICS OF DICTATORSHIP
Dictatorship consists of several characteristics.
This includes,
1)ruling by one party,
2) no or few trials before condemning a person to
death and censorship.
In a dictatorship a supreme ruler controls all the country's power.
Stable Government:-
As in a dictatorship, the decision-making lies with only
one person and others do not have any thing to say in the
working of the government, it offers a kind of stability to the
country. Problems such as frequent elections, as in the case of
democracy, or a disruption of peace due to political factors, do
not arise in a dictatorship.
5. Less Room for Corruption:-
A dictator is very stringent with regards to the rules,
regulations, penalties, punishments and rewards. This
makes the people working under him less liable to
corruption.
Lesser Crime Rate:-
Most of the dictatorship governments are police states.
So, in a way there is low crime rate under such regimes.
Another reason for a better law and order situation in
these states is that various laws are passed
immediately, without any discussion or waiting for the
public opinion on them. This leads to better control
over crimes too.
6. Most Efficient During Emergencies:
When a country faces any kind of emergency, such as a
war or a health epidemic, a dictatorship government
can prove to be the most efficient one.
The reason being that all the decisions are taken by
one person, so there is no ambiguity with regards to
the plan of action as well as individual responsibilities
that are fixed to cope with the emergency.
So one of its main advantages over democracy is that
it is better equipped to face emergencies.
7. "Things Happen" Quickly:-
In a dictatorship form of government, all things,
whether related to governance or businesses or
anything else, happen much quicker than in other
types of government. The reason for this is the
same i.e. decision-making lies with a single
person.
8. 1. Stability of government - the government will stay the
same. In times of political warfare and inner party
turmoil and war this may become a relief to finally have
a stable government,
2. The dictator may be a Benevolent Dictator meaning
that the dictator actually acts out in the best interests of
the people.
9. Loss of Freedom of choice - Citizens no longer have
the choice to choose who governs them. They cannot
vote in elections as it is all decided for them.
The Government will have absolute power. The
government may not think in the best interests of the
people. They may be more interested in building large
lavish palaces for themselves than feeding their
people.
The people may be oppressed by the regime as the
government would be intent on keeping their power
away from the citizens
10. Democracy is a form of government:-
i. Rulers elected by people take all major decisions.
ii. Elections offer a choice and fair opportunity to the people
to change the current rulers.
iii. This choice and opportunity is available to all the people
on an equal basis.
iv. The exercise of this choice leads to a government limited
by basic rules of the constitution and citizen’s rights.
11. It protects individual freedom.
Anybody can run for and hold political office.
It includes everyone in the decision-making process.
People can choose their own candidate (state wise)
Citizens are equal before law.
Democracy is freedom.
Citizens have equal right to the power.
12. More emphasis on quantity than on quality.
Rule of the incompetent.
Based on unnatural equality.
Voters do not take interest in election.
Lowers the moral standard.
Democracy is a government of the rich.
Misuse of public funds and time.
No stable government.
Dictatorship of majority.
Bad influence of political parties
13. Countries Having Dictatorship
Some of the countries that have dictatorship governments
include Cuba, Sudan, Burma, North Korea, Equatorial
Guinea and Saudi Arabia among many others. This form
of governance is characterised by authoritarianism and
totalitarianism.
14. Dictatorship will breed development though straightforward decision
making.
Better control the variables of human development.
Dictatorship is a more economic institution.
Dictatorships regimes can be a path for countries to move on from civil
wars and focus on development.
Dictatorships have flexibility in economic policy that breeds growth.
Dictatorship helps achieve social stability.
The longer lasting and biggest economic miracles have occurred under
dictatorships.
Dictatorship breeds order.
Dictators have incentives to promote development and diminish social
difference
15. Dictatorship will breed development though
straightforward decision making:-
A dictator being the all powerful head of the state will
face no opposition from other parties as in a
democracy. He will thus have complete freedom to
execute his decisions which might breed development.
Better control the variables of human
development:
One of the biggest examples is China (a Communist
country) where the population has been brought
under control by the government, through the one-child
norm policy which is virtually impossible in the
Indian democracy.
16. Dictatorship is a more economic institution:
In a country like India where poverty is a
lingering problem, it is but a luxury to spend lakhs on a
single election. Dictatorship is thus a far more economic
institution.
Dictatorships regimes can be a path for countries to move
on from civil wars and focus on development:
China can be used as an example yet again, as
the country has been almost absolutely insulated from wars
and terrorist attacks.
17. Dictatorships regimes can be a path for countries to
move on from civil wars and focus on development:
China can be used as an example yet again, as the country
has been almost absolutely insulated from wars and
terrorist attacks.
Dictatorships have flexibility in economic policy that
breeds growth:
Democracy can often stagnate economic
development. An example is West Bengal where the Tata
group could not establish their factory in Singur due to
stiff resistance from the opposition party in the
government.
18. Dictatorship helps achieve social stability:
Yes it does.
Dictatorship breeds order:
In a country like India where law and order is
disrupted time and again, dictatorship is definitely going to
help out. Even in the 21st century Indian women are
vulnerable and rape and molestation cases are reported
throughout the country from upscale Delhi to the remote
villages of Burdwan. India needs a really strong leader who
can make the country safe enough for our women to move
around fearlessly, with their heads held high.
19. Dictators have incentives to promote development and
diminish social differences:
A lot of readers might still be optimistic
enough to feel that democracy will spell better days for
India, but as a youth frustrated with the current situation
of my country I feel that we really need a change and
dictatorship may just be the way out for a better, brighter
India.
