Composites on the Move: The Need for Dynamic Testing Instron
- Dynamic testing of composites is critical for design but still lags behind metals testing. While fatigue testing of composites has begun, it has mostly involved simple tension-tension testing without temperature control. More realistic testing is needed that involves compression, reversed loading, and fixed strain rates.
- Strain rate testing is also important as materials behave differently at higher strain rates. Recent work has developed high strain rate compression testing up to 100/s but challenges remain in reducing noise and interpreting results.
- New analysis tools like digital image correlation and thermoelastic stress analysis allow more data-rich testing of failure modes like crack propagation but composites testing still has headroom for development.

Industrial process control often requires the measurement of liquid inventory volume or mass. If the material is contained within a tank of known shape and dimensions, the volume can be determined accurately by measuring the level of the liquid. Various means are used to determine the liquid level. One of the simplest is the downpipe sensor, sometimes referred to as a "bubbler". King-Gage is manufacturer of industrial downpipe liquid level measuring devices. The slides provide graphic depictions of how the systems function and provide an overview of several product configurations.
ISTEC’s Aquametro Domino Chemical Meters (ATEX) are intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres and are available in nominal diameter (DN) of 1/2" (15mm), 3/4" (20mm), 1" (25mm), 1-1/2" (40mm) and 2" (50mm). These bypass indicators form an integral part of an industrial process tank. A pipe is mounted on the side of the tank by means of two process connections. This ensures that the level in the tank corresponds exactly to the level in the pipe. A magnetized float within the pipe activates red/white magnetic rollers, providing a visual indication of fluid level within the tank. Level sensors mounted on the unit will give a 4-20mA output or 0 to 100% output. Magnetic switches will give a high or low alarm.

There are industrial process control applications where it can be beneficial to operate valve actuators with pressurized water instead of compressed air. There are instances, common at remote sites, where compressed air is not available, but mains water supply in the pressure range from
60-100psi (4 - 7 bar) is present. Standard HYTORK XL Actuators have been used successfully in water applications but the manufacturer recommends that their XLW Actuators, specifically designed for water operation, are
used in this application to assure smooth and reliable operation. Specialties of the XLW series address concerns with corrosion protection, bearings and preventing ingress of particulates with the water. Contaminated water can cause
damage to the actuator seals and bearing areas, reducing operating efficiency and actuator life.

IEEE-PSES Presentation: Don't Get Burned By Plasticsbbisenius
The use of Plastics in electrical products continues to grow. What started with circuit boards and transformer bobbins, now includes most enclosures and component bodies. New applications for plastics appear every day. Yet most engineers know little more than to ask for the UL flame rating.
To prevent getting “burned” during your compliance evaluations due to improperly specified plastics, it is important to know how to incorporate plastics into electrical products. We will discuss the core plastics requirements, material verification, differences between North American & International plastics standards, and the plastics tests. Perhaps even more importantly, we will discuss application specific plastics tests, how to avoid them, and how to prepare for them when they cannot be avoided.
This is a presentation intended for engineers and technicians who are involved with the design and/or compliance verification of products that incorporate plastics.

The TeleSensor is an external liquid level transmitter that uses a force balance principle to measure liquid levels in tanks. It has a flange that mounts to the outside of tanks and a diaphragm that senses the hydrostatic pressure from the liquid height. This pressure is converted to a proportional 4-20 mA electrical or pneumatic output signal. It can interface with indicators or controllers to monitor levels remotely. The system is largely unaffected by temperature and immune to drift, making it suitable for applications requiring accurate and reliable level measurement.

This document contains technical data sheets for Emerson's Hytork XL Series pneumatic rack and pinion actuators. It provides torque data for various actuator models in the XL26 to XL4581 range, specifying the torque generated from springs or at different air pressures from 40 to 120 PSI. Contact information is given for Emerson's Actuation Technologies Centers in Americas, Europe and Asia Pacific.
The document discusses closed-loop cooling systems and recommends a cooling tower plus plate heat exchanger system. This system provides a closed cooling circuit while using less energy than traditional closed-circuit cooling towers. It costs less to purchase and operate due to using less total HP. The heat exchanger plates are stainless steel and more accessible than the coil in traditional towers, making maintenance and cleaning easier. The system prevents downtime from corrosion and has a longer warranty.
Three piece body valves area multi-purpose ball valves. They tend to be used in more demanding applications where maintenance will be required on a more frequent basis than 2 piece valves. The 3 piece body's center section can be removed to allow the valve end caps to be welded without the possibility of damaging the valve seats. Any combination of end connections can be supplied to meet your custom requirements.
This document summarizes the Warren Controls ILEA series of industrial linear electric actuators. It describes the small, medium, and large frame sizes available, with thrust forces ranging from 450 to 5,600 pounds. The actuators can withstand temperatures up to 158 degrees Fahrenheit and have IP65 and IP67 enclosure ratings. The document provides specifications for the ILEA-F small frame and ILEA-A/B medium frame actuators.
Because of their structural design, trunnion mount ball valves are suitable for all pressure ranges and sizes. They are used by many manufacturers as a basis of design for their severe service ball valve offerings. A trunnion mount ball valve can also be advantageous for applications employing valve automation. Since the ball is not held in place by a tight fitting seal arrangement, operating torque tends to be lower for comparably sized trunnion valves, when compared to floating ball valves.

Advanced control scheme of doubly fed induction generator for wind turbine us...IJECEIAES
This paper describes a speed control device for generating electrical energy on an electricity network based on the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) used for wind power conversion systems. At first, a double-fed induction generator model was constructed. A control law is formulated to govern the flow of energy between the stator of a DFIG and the energy network using three types of controllers: proportional integral (PI), sliding mode controller (SMC) and second order sliding mode controller (SOSMC). Their different results in terms of power reference tracking, reaction to unexpected speed fluctuations, sensitivity to perturbations, and resilience against machine parameter alterations are compared. MATLAB/Simulink was used to conduct the simulations for the preceding study. Multiple simulations have shown very satisfying results, and the investigations demonstrate the efficacy and power-enhancing capabilities of the suggested control system.
DEEP LEARNING FOR SMART GRID INTRUSION DETECTION: A HYBRID CNN-LSTM-BASED MODELgerogepatton
As digital technology becomes more deeply embedded in power systems, protecting the communication
networks of Smart Grids (SG) has emerged as a critical concern. Distributed Network Protocol 3 (DNP3)
represents a multi-tiered application layer protocol extensively utilized in Supervisory Control and Data
Acquisition (SCADA)-based smart grids to facilitate real-time data gathering and control functionalities.
Robust Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are necessary for early threat detection and mitigation because
of the interconnection of these networks, which makes them vulnerable to a variety of cyberattacks. To
solve this issue, this paper develops a hybrid Deep Learning (DL) model specifically designed for intrusion
detection in smart grids. The proposed approach is a combination of the Convolutional Neural Network
(CNN) and the Long-Short-Term Memory algorithms (LSTM). We employed a recent intrusion detection
dataset (DNP3), which focuses on unauthorized commands and Denial of Service (DoS) cyberattacks, to
train and test our model. The results of our experiments show that our CNN-LSTM method is much better
at finding smart grid intrusions than other deep learning algorithms used for classification. In addition,
our proposed approach improves accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score, achieving a high detection
accuracy rate of 99.50%.
