How are students actually using technology? EMEA Online Symposium 2020Studiosity.com
At the EMEA Symposium 2020, Sarah Knight, Head of data and digital capability at Jisc, delivered a data-focused insight into how students are actually using technology in further and higher education. Here are some key findings:
- Office for Students predicts that over a million digitally skilled people will be needed by 2022 whilst 24% of HE students said they never worked online with others
- 70% of HE students agreed that digital skills were important for their chosen career but only 42% agreed that their course prepared them for the digital workplace
Here are the key recommendations that, now more than ever, can practically help your students:
- Raise awareness of the importance of digital skills
- Ensure they know what digital skills they need to have before they start and provide opportunities to develop these only online
- Encourage collaboration to emulate business practices
- Embed digital skills through curriculum design

The Real Economy in the Long RunPurpose of Assignment Students.docxoreo10
The Real Economy in the Long Run
Purpose of Assignment
Students examine the long-run determinants of both the level and the growth rate of real GDP per person and the factors that determine the productivity of workers and what governments might do to improve the productivity of their citizens. Students will learn how saving and investment are coordinated by the loanable funds market and will see the effects of taxes and government deficits on saving, investment, the accumulation of capital, and ultimately, the growth rate of output. Students will be introduced to tools that people use when they participate in financial markets. Students will see how people compare different sums of money at different points in time, how they manage risk, and how these concepts combine to help determine the value of a financial asset, such as a share of stock. Students will be introduced to the labor market and how economists measure the performance of the labor market using unemployment statistics. Students will address a number of sources of unemployment and some policies that the government might use to lower certain types of unemployment.
Assignment Steps

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Background
Via WonkHE, David Way recently wrote about how in
just 6 months, attitudes to Degree Apprenticeships
have changed in the HE sector: Numbers, delivery
models, funding and quality…
He advises that the ‘Apprenticeship’ profile needs to go
“up market” – to be attractive and relevant to young
people. To convince parents and employers.
3. www.AccessHE.ac.uk | @AccessHE | Wednesday 27 June 2018
3
Background
Way also cites the need for a proper dialogue with HE:
Trust is still lacking; delivery costs; better understanding;
new business models, rates and bands; new forms of
employer engagement and perhaps a new positioning?
And yet, the opportunities are out there:
Enhancing productivity; Social mobility; Industrial
Strategy; Levy surplus; Graduate employability; Career-
focused students…

the provision of Degree Apprenticeships?
“I'm supportive of more choice for learners and businesses. DAs provide a non-
traditional learning style (at long last!) that is so alternative to the typical HE
experience that it will result in more diversity within the student population,
within the workplace and across sectors… With the right communication and
approach universities will be able to tap into a larger population for their
recruitment channels and have the ability to really make a difference in
community and society. It will force universities to develop programmes more
directly aligned to the labour market rather than pet projects and nice-to-
haves!... The financial incentive for learners (paid for fees by employer) is great
as long as it doesn't get seen as a loophole by savvy middle class parents!”

Main findings : How do you currently feel about
the provision of Degree Apprenticeships?
“They may be a good idea in theory. I am in favour of us trying
to narrow the gap which exists between academic and
vocational pathways. However, the limited success of this
initiative to date in terms of opportunities available to young
people and of similar previous initiatives such as the Diploma
shows that age old prejudices and preferences for academia over
vocational study in the UK are unlikely to change in the short-
term. A holistic and long-term approach towards education, IAG
and choices involving schools, the FE/HE sectors and industry is
what is required.”

Summary
INreach as well as outreach (Do we do Apprenticeships?)
Multiple HEI departments – not always the same ones!
There is appetite for ‘Degree Apprenticeships’ but
frustration at speed / lack of progress / messaging
NOTE: No one stakeholder being blamed; more about IAG.
Most HEIs as ‘Early Majority’ – though note differences by
alignment

Summary
DA ‘functions’ can sometimes be lumped on one department
and/or across multiple departments.
Let’s not forget DA’s are actually offered by Employers!
Opportunity for providers / departments to learn from each
other?
Communication is key. I invite colleagues to come up with
some sort of Communications Strategy to facilitate more
productive working relationships.

About AccessHE
Member-led | Collaboration | Opportunities
A key division of London Higher and the largest network of its kind, AccessHE is the pan-
London organisation that aims to support the progression of under-represented groups
get in and get on in higher education (HE).
We do this by enabling HE institutions (HEIs), schools and colleges to achieve their
objectives on widening access to HE more efficiently and effectively.
With a strong membership of 26 HEIs and representation from schools, colleges and local
authorities across London, AccessHE is proud to be the conduit for a wide range of
collaborative projects and initiatives to help support under-represented groups through
their HE learner journeys (access – retention – success).
