Hardness of an alloy is operationally defined as the diameter of a dent formed when a 1 kg weight is dropped onto the alloy. The smaller the diameter of the dent, the harder the alloy is considered to be. Hardness can be measured by dropping a weight and measuring the diameter of the resulting dent on the alloy.
