Overview
The Massachusetts Childhood Obesity Research Demonstration Project, known as Mass In Motion, is a state-wide initiative to promote a healthy lifestyle in places where people work, live and play. The initiative was funded by in 2011 by a grant through the Affordable Care Act with a goal to create a multilevel and multisector intervention strategy to prevent and control obesity, combining interventions in the health care setting with public health interventions in the community. (Davison et al., 2015)The project was designed to be a comprehensive wellness initiative, incorporating evidence-based interventions in primary healthcare with community programs, WIC and other nutrition programs, as well as early childhood education centers and schools/afterschool programs. The goal was to form a partnership among the many different social and environmental factors that effect a child’s health and well-being, as well as to identify and target these factors to institute a change in health behaviors. (MA-CORD Study Group, 2015)
The program began as a part of a 2009 initiative started by Governor Deval Patrick which funded projects in 14 cities and towns across Massachusetts. In 2011 the state was awarded a grant through the CDC which allowed the program to be expanded to cover 52 Massachusetts cities and towns, impacting 33% of the state population, and as of 2014 there are 60 cities and towns with active Mass in Motion projects. While the main focus of the CORD component, funded by the CDC was on children 2-12 year sold, the Mass In Motion program has also developed programs for improving worksite health and overall community health. These programs have increased workplace productivity, lowered stress levels, encouraged weight loss, and improved green space across the state. (Mass in Motion, 2016)
Theoretical Approach
The framework of Mass in Motion is the social ecological model, a model which looks at the complex relationships between an individual, his/her personal relationships, community, institutional elements, community, and overall social policy. This framework is not designed to distinguish one factor as a reason or cause for the obesity, but rather looks at the interaction of these factors and how they can effect individual risk for obesity. The MA-CORD Study Group then developed interventions based on Social Cognitive Theory, recognizing and emphasizing the importance of social influence and reinforcement for behavior change.

Forming Hospital Tutor/Mentor Connection - vision
Inner city hospitals are anchor organizations, often the biggest employer and most influential leader in its neighborhood.
Many hospitals struggle to provide continuous services due to the high costs of poverty.
Since late 1990s Tutor/Mentor Connection (Tutor/Mentor Institute, LLC since 2011) has tried to enlist hospitals, universities and professional groups as strategic partners, using their own resources to help youth and families living in high poverty areas surrounding their organizations.
In 2001 grad students from DePaul University created strategic plan templates, which I've updated since then, to be used as starting points for hospital and university leaders interested in adopting the Tutor/Mentor Connection strategy as their own.
This is a vision. It could be a reality in cities across the world.
It just takes a small group of leaders to get it started.

Forming Hospital Tutor/Mentor Connection - vision
Inner city hospitals are anchor organizations, often the biggest employer and most influential leader in its neighborhood.
Many hospitals struggle to provide continuous services due to the high costs of poverty.
Since late 1990s Tutor/Mentor Connection (Tutor/Mentor Institute, LLC since 2011) has tried to enlist hospitals, universities and professional groups as strategic partners, using their own resources to help youth and families living in high poverty areas surrounding their organizations.
In 2001 grad students from DePaul University created strategic plan templates, which I've updated since then, to be used as starting points for hospital and university leaders interested in adopting the Tutor/Mentor Connection strategy as their own.
This is a vision. It could be a reality in cities across the world.
It just takes a small group of leaders to get it started.

Whatever It Takes: A White Paper on the Harlem Children's Zone
The Harlem Children’s Zone has created a new paradigm for fighting poverty, intended to overcome the limits of traditional approaches. Our model focuses primarily and intensively on the social, health, and educational development of children. To help support that development, we also provide wrap-around programs that improve the children’s family and neighborhood environments.
The theory of change underlying the HCZ model requires the coordinated application of its five core principles. To create change it is necessary to:
• Serve an entire neighborhood comprehensively and at scale. Engaging an entire neighborhood helps to achieve three goals: it reaches children in numbers significant enough to affect the culture of a community; it transforms the physical and social environments that impact the children’s development; and it creates programs at a scale large enough to meet the local need.
• Create a pipeline of support. Develop excellent, accessible programs and schools and link them to one another so that they provide uninterrupted support for children’s healthy growth, starting with pre-natal programs for parents and finishing when young people graduate from college. Surround the pipeline with additional programs that support families and the larger community.
• Build community among residents, institutions, and stakeholders, who help to create the environment necessary for children’s healthy development.
• Evaluate program outcomes and create a feedback loop that cycles data back to management for use in improving and refining program offerings.
• Cultivate a culture of success rooted in passion, accountability, leadership, and teamwork.

The Beginning Experience team provides grief support services to widowed, separated, and divorced adults through a weekend program. The team is led by Rose Brocato and includes 9 other members. They help participants work through their grief by teaching coping skills and giving them tools to let go of pain. Participants form new friendships and learn from others who have experienced similar losses. The team plans to offer more weekend programs each year and start a youth program, but needs funding for scholarships and future events like an international convention.

The GE Volunteers chapter made the holidays special for children at the Children's Home Society and Hacienda Girl's Ranch. They received 40 wish lists from foster kids and decorated a Christmas tree with them. Volunteers also selected a wish list and donated gifts. Additionally, volunteers visited Hacienda Girl's Ranch before Thanksgiving to hang lights and cook sides and desserts for their meal.

The team cleaned the kitchen, served lunch, and prepared Thanksgiving dinner during their visit. Going forward, they plan to establish ongoing relationships to provide monthly donations and assistance to keep the shelter running.

My team of 5 people volunteered at The Loft Food Pantry, serving over 1600 people by unloading trucks of food donations and stocking shelves. The food pantry has been operating since 2010 and has fed over 73,000 people regardless of attributes. My team plans to continue volunteering regularly. The food pantry needs a box truck to transport large food donations more efficiently since their growing clientele currently relies on volunteers' personal vehicles. The McCall family volunteered at Kids Against Hunger, helping to prepare for their monthly food packaging event where volunteers combine rice, soy, vegetables, and vitamins into packs that are shipped worldwide to malnourished children. Kids Against Hunger's food packs each provide meals for six people, helping address the global problem of over one billion undernourished worldwide.

On October 24, 2013, the author and their branch served Camp Adeline located in Adeline, IL by completing fall cleanup in preparation for their fall fundraiser, including clearing brush on trails for hay rack rides. Both the author and their family have a personal connection to the camp and plan to continue visiting and supporting it. Professionally, the team enjoyed serving and would like to help again as the camp is limited by funding. The camp director explained prize money could fund building a new storage facility, pond, and help expand programs to serve more children and include an after school program.

Bike Easy partnered with Dr. Eric Griggs and volunteers to hold educational bike rides at two city parks on September 28th and October 12th. Over 40 riders ages 6-63 learned bike safety and how to feel comfortable on bikes while getting exercise. The rides included stops where riders learned their rights and responsibilities on the road. Dr. Griggs plans to continue the fun rides but is seeking funding to expand the program reach more people.

Gastrointestinal Infections
GASTROINTESTINAL INFECTIONS result from the ingestion of pathogens that cause infections at the level of this tract, generally being transmitted by food, water and hands contaminated by microorganisms such as E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Vibrio cholerae, Campylobacter, Staphylococcus, Rotavirus among others that are generally contained in feces, thus configuring a FECAL-ORAL type of transmission.
Among the factors that lead to the occurrence of gastrointestinal infections are the hygienic and sanitary deficiencies that characterize our markets and other places where raw or cooked food is sold, poor environmental sanitation in communities, deficiencies in water treatment (or in the process of its plumbing), risky hygienic-sanitary habits (not washing hands after major and/or minor needs), among others.
These are generally consequences (signs and symptoms) resulting from gastrointestinal infections: diarrhea, vomiting, fever and malaise, among others.
The treatment consists of replacing lost liquids and electrolytes (drinking drinking water and other recommended liquids, including consumption of juicy fruits such as papayas, apples, pears, among others that contain water in their composition).
To prevent this, it is necessary to promote health education, improve the hygienic-sanitary conditions of markets and communities in general as a way of promoting, preserving and prolonging PUBLIC HEALTH.
Gastritis and Gastric Health
Gastric Health is one of the most relevant concerns in human health, with gastrointestinal infections being among the main illnesses that affect humans.
Among gastric problems, we have GASTRITIS AND GASTRIC ULCERS as the main public health problems. Gastritis and gastric ulcers normally result from inflammation and corrosion of the walls of the stomach (gastric mucosa) and are generally associated (caused) by the bacterium Helicobacter pylor, which, according to the literature, this bacterium settles on these walls (of the stomach) and starts to release urease that ends up altering the normal pH of the stomach (acid), which leads to inflammation and corrosion of the mucous membranes and consequent gastritis or ulcers, respectively.
In addition to bacterial infections, gastritis and gastric ulcers are associated with several factors, with emphasis on prolonged fasting, chemical substances including drugs, alcohol, foods with strong seasonings including chilli, which ends up causing inflammation of the stomach walls and/or corrosion. of the same, resulting in the appearance of wounds and consequent gastritis or ulcers, respectively.
