In What Do You Trust?
Sven Kramer entered the 2010 Vancouver
Olympics with the hope of winning three gold
medals in speed skating and tie him with the greatest skater the
Dutch had up to now – Ard Schenk, who won three gold medals at
the 1972 Sapporo Games. On the opening day of Speed skating he
captured gold in the 5,000 meter race and now he completed the
10,000 meter race in world record time of 12.54.50 a full four
seconds faster than his nearest competitor. However, Sven was
disqualified for failing to change lanes on one of the later laps.
"Usually, I don't want to blame anyone else, but this time I can't
do anything else," Kramer said. "I wanted to go on the outer lane,
then just before the cone, Gerard [Sven’s coach] shouted, ‘Inner
lane.' I thought he's probably right and went to the inner lane.
“The years of trust between coach and skater convinced Kramer to
change his mind and move inside. With one leg over the cone, he
cut the corner.” We all trust in something, or someone. We trust
our families, our friends. We trust the doctors who treat our ill-
nesses. We trust the police and the military to protect us. We trust
in our wealth, and our wisdom. In the book of Joshua and chapter
11 we read of three classes of men all trusting in something but
only one that had his trust in the right place. Jabin was the king of
Hazor who was trusting in a league of nations to defend himself
against Israel. Joshua tells us that “And it came to pass, when
Jabin king of Hazor heard these things, that he sent to Jobab king
of Madon, to the king of Shimron, to the king of Achshaph, 2 and
to the kings who were from the north, in the mountains, in the
plain south of Chinneroth, in the lowland, and in the heights of
Dor on the west, 3 to the Canaanites in the east and in the west,
the Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite in the moun-
tains, and the Hivite below Hermon in the land of Mizpah. 4 So
they went out, they and all their armies with them, as many people
as the sand that is on the seashore in multitude, with very many
horses and chariots. 5 And when all these kings had met together,
they came and camped together at the waters of Merom to fight
against Israel.” What an army that league was able to muster. Ac-
cording to Josephus, a Jewish historian who lived in the first cen-
tury, the combined forces of the Canaanites numbered 300,000
foot soldiers, 10,000 cavalry, and 20,000 chariots. Now Josephus
is said to exaggerate his numbers sometimes, but even if these
numbers are exaggerated the biblical account says that they are,
“as many people as the sand that is on the seashore in multitude,
with very many horses and chariots.” Too often we are impressed
by large numbers and be- come overly confident in them. Jabin
had seen the victory of Israel over the walled city of Jericho, their
conquest of Ai and their victories over all as they marched across
the land. Jabin became convinced that if he had a large enough
army he could stop the army of Israel. However, God gave Israel
the victory! This may very well have been one of the bloodier
battles that Israel was engaged in but the victory had been assured
to them by God. One interesting thing about this victory regards
the instructions that God gave to Israel. God told them: “You shall
hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.” One
would think that Israel was far behind the nations they had to fight
and these weapons captured in this battle would be of great value
in future battles. However, God did not want Israel to make the
same mistake being made by Jabin; the mistake of placing their
trust in anything other than in God! Jabin’s trust in the league of
nations was vain. It could not save them and give them the vic-
