Decompressive craniectomy is used at JPNATC to treat severe traumatic brain injuries. Between January 2008 and November 2008, 24.1% of patients with severe head injuries underwent decompressive craniectomy. The indications for decompressive craniectomy at JPNATC include severe head injury with acute subdural hematoma, midline shift, and mass effect; intracerebral contusions with mass effect and midline shift; and diffuse axonal injury with effaced cisterns and intracranial pressure above 20 despite maximum medical therapy.
