Carbon plays a central role in living organisms because it can combine in many ways with itself and other elements. It has four valence electrons, allowing it to form bonds with other carbon atoms in different arrangements. The four forms of pure carbon discussed are diamonds, graphite, fullerenes, and nanotubes. Diamonds have a crystalline structure where each carbon atom bonds to four others, while graphite has carbon layers where each atom bonds to three others. Fullerenes and nanotubes involve spherical and cylindrical arrangements of carbon atoms, respectively.
