This document provides instructions for a stylistic exercise assignment to create an illustration in the Arts & Crafts era style for a Grimm Brothers' fairy tale. Students are asked to write a one-page design abstract outlining at least six elements that characterize the Arts & Crafts illustration style. They must then create a 4" x 6" illustration applying these elements, choosing one of the Grimm fairy tales. Background information on the Arts & Crafts era, influential illustrators like Walter Crane and Kate Greenaway, and recommended online resources are also included. The deadline for submitting both the design abstract and completed illustration is March 23.

4. Walter Crane In 1862, Crane met printer Edmund Evans, who was deeply involved with the development of color printing processes. Within a few years, Evans was regularly using Crane's designs for his publications. Walter Crane's work, characterized by static imagery and strong, bold lines, lent itself well to the new printing techniques. It was also well-suited to the production of nursery books -- a booming industry in the late 1860's.
