PERSONAL STATEMENT
Since leaving school in 1987 I have worked in the heating and ventilation industry for over 25
years. I have experience in all forms of heating and plumbing from domestic to large
commercial sites including district heating systems and steam plant/ boilers. Over the past
10 years with running my own company I have gained experience in managing contracts
from the ground up and understanding it takes more to complete a contract than just
finishing the work on site. From making the first contact with the client, understanding and
creating drawings and specifications is as important as completing the job on time, on
budget and to the clients and company’s satisfaction.
EMPLOYMENT
Heating and Ventilation Engineer, C Seward & Co. Preston, Lancashire
1987-1991
Heating and Ventilation apprenticeship, Pipe work, Advanced Craft Gas and Arc welding, Gas pipe
work and testing. I worked on a number of sites around Lancashire, Lancaster University,
Calderstones Hospital, Ribbleton High School and Lancashire County Council Records Office.
Key Achievements:
Winning student of the year 1989 at Blackpool and the Fylde College
Running Ribbleton High School refit at the age of 19
Completing the Plant Room at Harris Museum 1990
Service Engineer,Martindale’s Ltd, Salford
1991-1992
Service work based at the R.O.F Arms site at Euxton working on super heated steam plant, large
commercial Heavy Oil/ Gas burners and tube boilers, service work domestic/ commercial gas
appliances Chorley Borough Council and Wigan Schools.
Key Achievements:
The chance to work on large super heated steam boilers and large burners.
Plant Supervisor, Lancashire County Council, Preston
1992-2002
Maintenance Supervisor based at Preston managing a team of 10 Plant Operatives. We provided
pro-active and re-active service and repair works for 25 buildings and office blocks in
Preston/Blackburn to all heating and plumbing. Small works, planned maintenance take off lists for
plant and materials. Managing plant operative time sheets, holiday cover and sickness amongst
other human resource issues.
Key Achievements:
Passing NEBS Management Course in 1996.
Arranging fire and health and safety courses for the Plant Operatives.
Managing Director of Heating Solutions Ltd, Preston
2002-2007
When I discovered that I was going to be a father I decided to start up on my own as there was no
scope for promotion with the council and rumours of redundancy were rife. Within two years I
employed three people full time and three to four people on a sub contractor basis. HSP completed
all types of work from a tap washer to our last mechanical contract value approx £200k. The
company was HVCA registered and completed contracts for Lancashire County Council, BAE Systems,
Fylde Council, T Jollys, MicroMatic Ltd, Thermatic Ltd and various building contractors. I designed the
mechanical packages and installed various heating/ plumbing systems including solar and renewable
packages, attended meetings as a sub contractor and main contractor. It was my responsibility to
inspect and write out method statements, risk assessments, as fitted drawings and manage the
contracts.

Starting up company and winning first contract.
Learning and understanding how to price and win contracts.
Mechanical Supervisor, Walsh IBS Ltd, Nelson
2007-Sept 2009
I was offered the post with Walsh that included running contracts from the drawing stage to
handover meetings. We completed several contracts the last being for Bovis at Sheffield University,
(mechanical value £400k) to which I was the mechanical supervisor which included completing daily
health and safety checks, tool box talks for all sub contractors and in house staff. My daily duties
included completing take off lists for materials, organising labour both sub contractor and in house,
completing as fitted drawings for each contract and liaising with contract managers and clients.
Clients included Manchester Airport Detention Centre, The Birches (Warden Construction), ISG
Construction (King Street Offices Manchester), and Bolton University amongst others.
Key Achievements:
Bringing the knowledge and transferring my skills from running my own business to Walsh.
Continual professional development and operating as a contract manager.
Mechanical Supervisor / Project Manager - Smith Group UK Ltd, Preston
Sept 2009 - Sept 2010
My previous line manager from Walsh joined Smith Group and head hunted me to offer me the
opportunity to work on the substantial Media City contract as a Mechanical Supervisor/ Project
Manager. I was based on Plot B4, University of Salford Building.
My daily duties included completing take off lists for materials, organising labour both sub
contractor and in house, completing as fitted drawings for each contract and liaising with contract
managers and clients. Attending Design Meetings, Co-ordination, Health and Safety and Delivery
meetings. I wrote and oversaw each Method Statement for the mechanical side including the
implementation of safe systems of works.

Completing the contract to the commissioning stage with site constraints.

Sept 2010 – April 2011
The contract at Media City ended with Smith Group and I returned to my previous role at Walsh IBS
Ltd.
Mechanical Supervisor/ Project Engineer, S. C. Horsfield, Preston
April 2011 – to present
I started work for a local family run company based in Preston who had several contracts under way
including a Booths Supermarket at Media City. Employed as a project engineer I managed several
contracts which included phase 1 at Waitrose Alderley Edge.
The company has grown fast and in February 2012 I was asked to take over the Service,
Maintenance and small works division heading up six engineers and a project coordinator.
This includes PPM and reactive works for a number of clients one of which has over 2000 PPM tasks
per year to complete over some 30 stores. Small works include boiler and plant room upgrading and
replacement with boiler and controls packages.
The small works side has grown and this year I have taken on a small works manager to oversee the
client base and grow this side.
Duties include, setting up and managing budgets for the PPM for each client.
Implementing safe systems of works and Risk assessments and Method statements for each task.
Implementing Dynamic RAMS for the engineers on reactive call-outs.
Daily management of each of the PPM tasks on Service manager system which includes live
management of engineers, budgets and invoicing.
Supervision of engineers and to provide live technical advice on site to provide solutions.
Monthly meetings with senior client management and facilities management teams to manage
budgets and to advice on the replacement of plant.
Daily reactive works which include site supervision and mentoring to engineers.
