A variety of use cases are in production using nearly all major services. The architecture includes physical, SDN, and application/network function layers. Standardization of information, data models, and processes is important to make components vendor agnostic. Next steps include expanding orchestration and OpenStack, validating critical use cases, and accelerating commercial capabilities across Vodafone markets.

iBwave: the in-building Wireless Standard
This document discusses iBwave's mobile in-building wireless planning solution. It allows site surveys, RF data collection, floor plan creation and wireless predictions to be done directly on a mobile device. This streamlines the design process, reducing time spent on site from around 21 hours using traditional methods to around 10 hours using iBwave Mobile. Key benefits include significant time savings, completing the survey and design in a single site visit, and ability to validate wireless coverage predictions in real-time. The solution also facilitates documentation sharing and as-built designs. An example project surveying 7 floors of a LA warehouse was completed in around 2 hours using this approach.

The user with their BYOD smartphone is often geographically very close
Devices need to collaborate locally (collision avoidance etc)
BUT the 5G model has all the traffic traversing the telco core – even when it could have remained in the same cell, adding costs and latency.
WebRTC’s TURN/ICE protocols potentially offer a way to keep local traffic local, without minimal changes to the network/endpoints.
We’ll describe how the pieces might fit together.

Multilayer optimization deals with projected traffic demands of each type of service traffic, by constructing and analyzing different combinations for handling traffic across the transport layers to end up with a whole that is much less than the sum of the parts.

The MONEH Innovation Showcase chaired by James Body, Telet Research
The MONEH Innovation Showcase is aimed at fundamentally changing what it means to be a mobile network operator. James and the Telet Research team have been beavering away to implement a cloud based cellular core that supports Multi Operator Neutral Host (MONEH) operation. This means that any privately owned Radio Access Network with embedded Evolved Packet Core (EPC) will be able to accept inbound roaming traffic from other mobile network users. The demo will include production ready Acceleran radios with an embedded EPC from Quortus providing an LTE service, so members of the audience will have the opportunity to join the demo with their own mobiles! The Interoperability Challenge in Telecom and NFS Environments

Communications service providers (CSPs) have a wide range of options when building virtualized services from the ground up including multiple choices for each functional block in the ETSI NFV reference architecture. CSPs prefer heterogeneous systems with building blocks from different vendors including open source software; for such deployments interoperability becomes a crucial requirement.
OpenStack, as the NFVI and VIM, serves as a widely used cloud platform for telecom and NFV use cases. As a common base, OpenStack offers the means for vendors and other open source projects to ease the interoperability challenge by providing a set of open API’s while focusing on upgradeability and backward compatibility.
However, when it comes to productization, interoperability testing often falls short and is sometimes left to the carrier as shown by the testing programs actively run by no fewer than 10 organizations today.

The ETSI NFV Release 2 interoperability testing activities - standardization and recently completed ETSI PlugTest. Over 40 commercial and open source implementations were tested for interoperability, including 20 virtual network functions, 10 management and orchestration solutions and 10 NFV platforms.
The New IP Agency (NIA) interoperability testing campaigns of commercial NFV implementations executed by EANTC, focusing on results, lessons learned and recommendations.

Hands-on Lab: Test Drive Your OpenStack Network
Neutron is deployed in the majority of OpenStack clouds but it still constitutes one of the key areas of concerns for organizations world-wide. The transition from traditional hardware-centric networking to the software defined model takes time and learning and requires a mental shift as well as a change in workflows, procedures, tools and best-practices. In this session each participant will be provided with a personal sandbox OpenStack running a live Liberty-based environment and will work on common use cases and applications of SDNs in an OpenStack Cloud. The class will focus on test cases that will move beyond the basics of L2 and L3 and deploy VNFs such as NAT and security policies on top of a 3-tier application topology. The class will also go through exercises that are focused on monitoring and troubleshooting SDNs in an OpenStack cloud.

The survey gathered responses from 120 participants in 2022 compared to 114 in 2021. It covered general topics such as DDoS attacks, security practices, STIR/SHAKEN implementation, IPv6 deployment, and expectations for major tech companies over the next two years. Key findings included that around half of participants have experienced a DDoS attack in 2022 and application-level attacks were as common as volumetric attacks. Most organizations take both reactive and proactive security approaches but more so reactive. STIR/SHAKEN implementation is ongoing with international carriers needing it to terminate traffic in North America. IPv6 deployment remains steady with no major differences between regions. The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.

Overview and Goals Demonstrates how to leverage Open Source MANO connected to OpenStack to: • Automate the deployment of IxLoad VE test tool • Deploy a complete test bed (networks) in an OpenStack environment • Execute IxLoad tests to determine the performance curve of the FW when using a different number of SIP peers and generated SIP channels • The performance metric of interest is maximum rate of SIP calls that can be established through a DUT between endpoints in the Private network when the SIP Proxy is in a Public network and their Mean Opinion Score (MOS) as well. The device under test (DUT) is the virtual Firewall • It is deployed as a VNF in OpenStack using Open Source MANO 3

Virtual Network Functions (VNF) Testing Testing virtually by inserting test interfaces into the virtualized server • Test the vSwitch for performance • Test each of the virtual appliances (Firewall, SBC, DPI) • Test virtual appliance chaining • Isolate and test each function before mapping to physical interfaces Can also test with a combination of physical and virtual test ports 5

VNF Testing – Architecture • DUT shall be installed separately and placed between the endpoints in the Private Network when the SIP Proxy is installed in a Public Network • OSM, FW Test, IxLoad VE and its virtual test appliances are deployed in Management Network Provider Router MNG Network ChassisFW Test OSM IxLoad DUT1 Network SIP CalleeSIP Caller DUT2 Network SIP Server HA Network Firewall
- 9. VNF Testing – Test Bed Network Setup is quite complex and requires for deployment automation OSM does that using the NSD package FW Test, IxLoad VE and its virtual test appliances are deployed by OSM using VNFDs
