Demonstrate the power and viability of inter-carrier data-on-demand services through automated provisioning, management, and settlement.
This presentation discusses the proof of concept first delivered at MEF in Los Angeles in 2019 and accompanied a production demonstration of the MEF Lifecycle Orchestration API (Sonata).
2. What problem are we trying to solve?
How do international connectivity providers reach
beyond their physical networks to offer on demand
services, such as Carrier Ethernet, to customers
that are doing business outside of their own
footprints?
2
3. How are we attempting to solve this problem?
MEF Lifecycle Service Orchestration (LSO) Sonata belongs to the family of LSO Interface
Reference Points (IRP) as defined in MEF 55
Sonata is the business-to-business IRP. It manages the service, operation and
commercial interactions (e.g., serviceability, ordering, billing, trouble ticketing, etc.)
between two network providers (e.g., Service Provider and Partner Domain)
Sonata supports non-control cross domain interactions between the Service Provider's
Business Applications and the Partner's Business Applications
The current Sonata implementation is limited to fixed-term, manual processes, replacing
human interactions but not yet automating the entire lifecycle such as enabling
on-demand services

5. What are some of the use cases?
• Service Provider query the Partner's product catalog (e.g. wholesale catalog) for
Product Offerings that are available for the Service Provider to select. This may
include some geographical and service information to support availability queries
of a Product Offering in a specific geographical area
• Service Provider develops (based on Product Offerings), places, tracks, and changes
Product Orders with the Partner
• Service Provider requests modification of Product Instances
• Service Provider receives Product Instance performance and fault information
provided by the Partner
• Service Provider receives information from the Partner about the scheduled
maintenance that may impact their Product Instances
• Service Provider places and tracks trouble reports
• Service Provider exchanges usage and billing information
5
7. What lessons have we learned?
• APIs that automate existing inter-service provider processes are nice to have
• Automating the existing configure -> price -> quote process will deliver
efficiencies but not innovation
• APIs that automate new inter-service provider processes are a must have
• On demand data services requires on-demand APIs
• Network-as-a-Service Platforms are evolving faster than the standards
• In order to automate managed data services we need to adopt standards for
Information modelling and processes
• Automated commercials is just as important as automated service delivery
• The adoption of distributed ledger technology is a natural extension
