DATA BASE
MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
By Ashir Azfal
What is Database ?
A database is an organized collection of data, stored and accessed electronically . Simply
anything which can store data and could be accessed by other peoples is a database but a
database is term is more formally used for a collection of data is an organized form.
 For Eg : Your mobile , computer , laptop , ipad, ipod, all are the examples of database.
You have seen peoples working on excel sheets for data entry what they are doing
exactly ? They are making a database but in an organized way same as people working
on access , Microsoft SQL server or other management system making databases.
Now what is Database Base Management
System ?
 The database management system (DBMS) is the software that interacts with
end users, applications, and the database itself to capture and analyze data.
A general-purpose DBMS allows the definition, creation, querying, update,
and administration of databases.
 For Example : Tools you use to create a database or datasheet like excel ,
access , Microsoft SQL server management studio 2017 is also a example od
database management software.
What Task Data Base Management System
could perform for You?
 Data definition – Creation, modification and removal of definitions that
define the organization of the data.
 Update – Insertion, modification, and deletion of the actual data.
 Retrieval – Providing information in a form directly usable or for further
processing by other applications. The retrieved data may be made available
in a form basically the same as it is stored in the database or in a new form
obtained by altering or combining existing data from the database.
 Administration – Registering and monitoring users, enforcing data security,
monitoring performance, maintaining data integrity, dealing with concurrency
control, and recovering information that has been corrupted by some event
such as an unexpected system failure.
Where Actually Database Base
Management System Store Your Data ?
Data base management system stored your data on data server . Most of the
people you known about a term database servers or data base cloud or more
simple cloud that big organizations stored your data on their protected clouds.
There are two Questions which came into mind .
Q1) But Why on data Server ?
Q2) What is a Data Server?
What are Data base Servers and Why ?
Database servers are dedicated computers that hold the actual databases and
run only the DBMS and related software.
Database servers are usually multiprocessor computers, with generous memory
and RAID disk arrays used for stable storage.
What is RAID DISK and What is Purpose
of these Disks ?
 RAID is used for recovery of data if any of the disks fail. Hardware database
accelerators, connected to one or more servers via a high-speed channel, are
also used in large volume transaction processing environments.
Three Layers of Database ?
A database management system provides three views of the database data:
 The external level defines how each group of end-users sees the organization
of data in the database. A single database can have any number of views at
the external level.
 The conceptual level is rather of interest to database application developers
and database administrators and nothing to do the outside world.
 The internal level is concerned with cost, performance, scalability and other
operational matters. It deals with storage layout of the data, using storage
structures such as indexes to enhance performance.
How Data bases have been made ?
 Data base have been made by the database developers via an data base
management system software tool via using a database language.
 There are several database management tools in the market for developing
the databases or for managing it by the database language such as SQL .
What is SQL ?
SQL is a database language for interacting with a database . It is the most
popular most used and standardized language for interacting with a database.
SQL is distinguished into sub languages .
 Data control language (DCL) – controls access to data;
 Data definition language (DDL) – defines data types such as creating, altering, or
dropping and the relationships among them;
 Data manipulation language (DML) – performs tasks such as inserting, updating, or
deleting data occurrences;
 Data query language (DQL) – allows searching for information and computing derived
information.
