Mental Attitude: Youth Football Increases Odds of Brain Problems Later in Life. Kids who start playing tackle
football before the age of twelve appear to be at greater risk for mental and behavioral problems in adulthood. In this
study, researchers questioned 214 men who formerly played either high school, college, or professional football and no
other organized sports. Compared with those who began playing football at a later age, those who started before the age of
twelve were 33% more likely to show signs of depression and about 28% more likely to have behavioral problems in
adulthood. Lead author Dr. Michael Alosco writes, “Research on the effects of football on the brain is now at a point
where it cannot be ignored.” Translational Psychiatry, September 2017
Health Alert: Dirty Air May Harm Your Kidneys. An analysis of eight years of data concerning 2.5 million adults
indicates that regular exposure to particulate matter air pollution—a mixture of dust, dirt, soot, or smoke either inhaled in
either solid form or water droplets—can negatively affect kidney function. Study leader Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly further
explains, “Even levels below the limit set by the [Environmental Protection Agency] were harmful to the kidneys. This
suggests that there is no safe level of air pollution.” Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, September 2017
Diet: Fruits and Veggies May Lower Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Risk. University of Athens-based researchers report
that individuals with a diet rich in fruits and vegetables may have up to a 21% reduced risk for developing non-Hodgkin
lymphoma. Leukemia & Lymphoma, February 2018
Exercise: Exercise May Slow Kidney Damage in Lupus Patients. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes the body
to attack and damage organs, such as the kidneys. In a new study involving mice with lupus, researchers found that
moderate exercise nearly cut a subject's risk for severe inflammatory damage to the kidneys in half. The results suggest
that lupus patients may benefit from adding a daily regimen of physical activity to their treatment plan.
Frontiers in Physiology, May 2017
Chiropractic: Adolescent Back Pain Predicted By Early Risk Factors. This study followed 1,088 teens for three years
and found that having low back pain (LBP) at 14 years of age is strongly associated with LBP at 17 years of age. The
analysis also found that the risk of LBP is greater at age 17 if any of the following factors are present earlier in
adolescence: neck/shoulder pain, poor posture, somatic complaints, aggressive behavior, or low levels of leisure time
physical activity. Journal of Othropeadic and Sports Physical Therapy, September 2017
Wellness/Prevention: Fall History May Indicate Driving Risk for Seniors. A review of data from 15 published studies
including over 17,000 older adults found that those with a history of falling had a 40% greater risk for being involved in a
motor vehicle collision during their latter years. The authors of the analysis write, “Further research is needed to clarify
the mechanisms linking falls to crash risk and to develop effective interventions to ensure driving safety in older adults
with a history of falls.” Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, September 2017
