Offspring study, researchers found that individuals with high blood pressure at midlife and who continued to have high
blood pressure into their senior years had nearly double the risk of dementia as those who maintained a normal blood

Health Alert: Insomnia May Increase the Risk of Kidney Disease. An analysis of data concerning 957,687 military
veterans found that individuals with chronic insomnia have up to a 1.5-times greater risk for kidney disease and a 2.4-
times elevated risk for kidney failure. Lead researcher Dr. Csaba Kovesdy writes, “Chronic insomnia is an important and
relatively common condition among patients with normal kidney function. Attention to its proper management could have

Diet: Sugary Drinks Bad for Your Heart. A review of 36 published studies indicates that drinking one sugar-sweetened
beverage per day can increase the risk of hypertension, while individuals who consume two or more sugary drinks per day
have an elevated risk for metabolic syndrome, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

Exercise: Strength Training May Be as Important as Aerobic Exercise… A study involving over 80,000 adults
compared different fitness routines and found that individuals who performed exercises aimed at improving strength had a
23% reduced risk for premature death and a 31% lower risk for cancer-related death. Lead author Dr. Emmanuel
Stamatakis adds, “The study shows exercise that promotes muscular strength may be just as important for health as
aerobic activities like jogging or cycling… And assuming our findings reflect cause and effect relationships, it may be
even more vital when it comes to reducing risk of death from cancer.”

Chiropractic: Movement Helps Patients with Knee Arthritis. Though it seems counterintuitive, a new study finds that
spending more time moving around actually helps patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis. In the study, which included
1,873 adults with osteoarthritis of the knee, researchers found that patients who replaced one hour of sedentary activity
each day with one hour of light-physical activity were less likely to have a slower walking speed two years later. Doctors
of chiropractic commonly recommend adopting an exercise routine to patients with knee osteoarthritis, as movement is
required for vital nutrients to absorb into cartilaginous tissues.

University note that removing electronic media from the bedroom and encouraging a calming bedtime routine are
important for helping your child achieve restful, quality sleep. They offer the following recommendations: talk to your
family about the importance of sleep; encourage bedtime without electronics; don’t allow electronics in children and teen
bedrooms; discuss the negative effects of bright light during sleep; and keep in mind that lack of sleep can contribute to
