Health Alert: Drugs Are Causing More Fatal Crashes in the US Than Alcohol. According to a new report, drugs were
detected in 43% of drivers who suffered fatal injuries in 2015, which was a higher percentage than cases involving alcohol
alone. The findings reveal a dangerous trend that is most likely tied to an increasing number of states legalizing marijuana and
the current opioid epidemic. Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility CEO Ralph Blackman explains, “As drunk
driving has declined, drugged driving has increased dramatically. And many of today's impaired drivers are combining two or

Diet: Energy Drinks Affect the Heart and Blood Pressure. A recent study investigated the effect of energy drinks on the
heart compared with other caffeinated beverages. In the study, researchers divided eighteen participants into two groups: one
group consumed 32 ounces of a commercially-available energy drink and the second group was given a control drink containing
caffeine. The researchers found that participants in the energy drink group experienced more profound changes in the heart's
electrical activity and blood pressure than those in the control drink group. The findings suggest that individuals who have high
blood pressure, underlying cardiac conditions, or other health issues may want to avoid or use caution when consuming energy

Exercise: More Active Kids Could Save Billions in Health Costs. New research suggests that just a slight increase in
physical activity among American children could save tens of billions of dollars in medical costs and lost wages down the road.
According to investigators, if all eight to eleven year olds took part in 25 minutes of exercise three times per week, it would
prevent $62.3 billion in medical costs and lost wages during their lives. Study leader Dr. Bruce Lee notes, “Physical activity not
only makes kids feel better and helps them develop healthy habits, it's also good for the nation's bottom line.”

Chiropractic: Disk Degeneration Common in Young Women. Lumbar disk degeneration is known to be a significant cause
of lower back pain. A recent study set out to evaluate the process and features of lumbar disk degeneration progression among
young women. Investigators performed lumbar MRIs on 84 female nursing students and then repeated the MRIs seven to
fourteen years later. They found that 31% of the participants already had disk degeneration in their 20s and that disk
degeneration rapidly progressed among these individuals as they aged. Journal of Orthopedic Science, April 2017
