Introduction
 Marathi word literally means „Boxman‟ or
  „Box Delivery Man‟
 Started in the nineteenth centuary to meet
  the needs of British working officers
 Continuous existence even after the
  independence of India from British
Working Culture
   Delivers launch box to office goers and to
    school children.
   The food is normally home cooked food.
   Strict distribution of duties among members
    of the organization.
   The pickup man pickup the tiffin from home
    at fixed time.
   The picked tiffin is moved to a fixed place
    next to the railway station . At this point his
    job is over.
Contd….
 All the collected tiffin box are load into the
  luggage compartment.
 Two or four person travel along with the
  tiffin boxes .
 Collect the lunch boxes at the terminal and
  deliver to the office;
 Lastly, same exercised is reversed in the
  evening to collected the empty boxes.

Internal communication of
    Dabbawalas
•   Follows flat structure with only three layers for
    the better communication, the first layer is top
    management,second layer is governing
    bodies and the third layer is dabbawalas
    themselves
•   Instead of following top down approach they
    follow the bottom up approach.
•   This entire framework depends on teamwork
    and cooperation
   They have 2-3 dabbawala groups in
    each operation area,tiffin collection is
    group wise but transportation is
    shared with other groups

   Due to the proper communication
    among the dabbawalas ,one
    dabbawala doesnot interrupt other
    dabbawalas work.
External communication of
     Dabbawalas
   Even though customers are growing, they have color
    coding system, which ensures that every Tiffin goes to
    correct person.
   A collecting dabbawala‟s, usually on bicycle collects
    dabbas either from workers home or from the dabba
    makers.
   Many of the carriers are illiterate, the dabbas have some
    sort of distinguishing marks on them such as a color or a
    group of symbols.
   They have distributed their leaflets with Microsoft laptops
    in Mumbai, offering mini discount offer for food delivery.
   Although no of transactions is large ,each persons
    handles a limited no of transactions at a time.
 The grouped dabbas are put into the
  coaches of the train with markings to
  identify the destinations of the boxes.
 At each station, boxes are handed
  over to a local dabbawala‟s who
  delivers them.
 The empty boxes after lunch are again
  collected and sent back to the
  respective houses.
4) Formal education is not everything and all about
in doing business at present. How do you see this
situation working in reference to the dabbawalas.
Bring out any other case of success in this regard.


Many think the only way to succeed is through
education. While piling on the degrees can earn you
piles of dough and debt it's not the only option.

The lack of a college degree did not hinder the
success of the late Steve Jobs and Bill Gates .
The average education level of the dabbawala
being around the eighth grade have become a
global business school example .


The success of the system depends on teamwork
,time management, dedication.


The future managers and new enterpreneour of
MNCs will get tips from dabbawalas.
Due to the proper application of logistics and supply
chain management of dabbawalas helped them in
their success, though they haven‟t get any degree in
the business studies.

Hard work, dedication, commitment, passion in work
leads to the success of the bussiness, not only the
higher degree education.

  • 2. Introduction  Marathi word literally means „Boxman‟ or „Box Delivery Man‟  Started in the nineteenth centuary to meet the needs of British working officers  Continuous existence even after the independence of India from British
  • 3. Working Culture  Delivers launch box to office goers and to school children.  The food is normally home cooked food.  Strict distribution of duties among members of the organization.  The pickup man pickup the tiffin from home at fixed time.  The picked tiffin is moved to a fixed place next to the railway station . At this point his job is over.
  • 4. Contd….  All the collected tiffin box are load into the luggage compartment.  Two or four person travel along with the tiffin boxes .  Collect the lunch boxes at the terminal and deliver to the office;  Lastly, same exercised is reversed in the evening to collected the empty boxes.

  • 8. Negative Aspects:  Miscommunication might result in the unpardonable error Comparision:  Technique used by dabbawalas vs modern use of IT technology
  • 9. Internal communication of Dabbawalas • Follows flat structure with only three layers for the better communication, the first layer is top management,second layer is governing bodies and the third layer is dabbawalas themselves • Instead of following top down approach they follow the bottom up approach. • This entire framework depends on teamwork and cooperation
  • 10. They have 2-3 dabbawala groups in each operation area,tiffin collection is group wise but transportation is shared with other groups  Due to the proper communication among the dabbawalas ,one dabbawala doesnot interrupt other dabbawalas work.
  • 11. External communication of Dabbawalas  Even though customers are growing, they have color coding system, which ensures that every Tiffin goes to correct person.  A collecting dabbawala‟s, usually on bicycle collects dabbas either from workers home or from the dabba makers.  Many of the carriers are illiterate, the dabbas have some sort of distinguishing marks on them such as a color or a group of symbols.  They have distributed their leaflets with Microsoft laptops in Mumbai, offering mini discount offer for food delivery.  Although no of transactions is large ,each persons handles a limited no of transactions at a time.
  • 12.  The grouped dabbas are put into the coaches of the train with markings to identify the destinations of the boxes.  At each station, boxes are handed over to a local dabbawala‟s who delivers them.  The empty boxes after lunch are again collected and sent back to the respective houses.
  • 13. 4) Formal education is not everything and all about in doing business at present. How do you see this situation working in reference to the dabbawalas. Bring out any other case of success in this regard. Many think the only way to succeed is through education. While piling on the degrees can earn you piles of dough and debt it's not the only option. The lack of a college degree did not hinder the success of the late Steve Jobs and Bill Gates .
  • 14. The average education level of the dabbawala being around the eighth grade have become a global business school example . The success of the system depends on teamwork ,time management, dedication. The future managers and new enterpreneour of MNCs will get tips from dabbawalas.
  • 15. Due to the proper application of logistics and supply chain management of dabbawalas helped them in their success, though they haven‟t get any degree in the business studies. Hard work, dedication, commitment, passion in work leads to the success of the bussiness, not only the higher degree education.
  • 16. Walt Disney: Walt, regarded as the most influential animator because of his creativity with cartoons. He dropped out of high school at 16 and founded Walt Disney; a company which now has an annual revenue of about $30billion. “If you can dream it, you can do it.” – Walt Disney Walt Disney
