4. Shifting Gears in Physics
Our Physics teachers have shifted gears from
teachers and students building apps for the app store,
to building web-based apps.
This shift opens the opportunity for students to
think through the process of how to make something
work. Students are responsible to think through
every condition under which an event should occur.

5. iPad Accelerometer Web App
❖
Physics teachers worked together to
create the iPad Accelerometer web app
❖
This web app has replaced the
expensive accelerometers
❖
Benefits:
❖
Instead of purchasing 28 of the $75 sensors, students are now
able to use this web app on their own
❖
Classroom layout could be changed from desks to tables to
facilitate a more student centered environment.
❖
The iPad becomes a mobile lab station.

7. Transforming Assessments in
an English 1:1 Classroom
❖
Move away from drill-and-kill instruction that relied heavily on multiple choice
reading quizzes as a way of assessing student comprehension and higher-level
thinking.
❖
Everything students do for me is written -- be it a one-sentence exit slip to assess
their understanding of a concept taught that day, a paragraph response to assess their
comprehension of assigned reading, or a full-blown essay to assess their ability to
analyze literature.
❖
Google Drive have allowed me to give students more thorough, more frequent and
more timely feedback on their work.
❖
The Subtext app allows a teacher to embed activities into written text in a way that
links literature with real life, deepens student understanding and assesses
comprehension. Put simply, this enrichment could never be possible with printed
materials.

8. Innovative Teaching
http://flip.it/5eN7Q
This on-line magazine is used to collect student collaborative lab blogs in the app Flipboard. Students are able to
collaborate and go more in depth with their lab reports in lieu of answering some pre-determined questions. Students use
a mixture of Google Docs and Blogger to "capture" their lab experience and attempt to report out their research much like
real-world scientists. By clicking each blog, the teacher can easily see their improvement from the first lab to their latest
and can observe student growth concerning how they are diving deeper into the investigations and drawing higher
ordered conclusions from their data.

9. From Deficits to Gains
Students in this 1-1 section of math have LD eligibility in math reasoning and/or calculation. As
part of a remediation program to address these skills deficits, students complete work on Khan
Academy. On some days, students work through the lessons recommended through the
program. When/if a student does not meet a critical learning standard, the teacher can assign
a specific lesson that coincides with the deficient skill.

18. Benefits of 1:1
❖I find the instantaneous feedback on student progress through the
formative assessment process, gives students a sense of what they
need to improve on and gives them an opportunity to ask questions
immediately on concepts we have covered to prepare for the
summative assessments.
❖Technology has a!owed me the ability to evaluate the PROCESS of
learning rather than just the PRODUCTS making the learning
that takes place deeper and my instruction more focused and
effective. It a!ows students to overcome their specific learning
obstacles in a private and dignified way.

19. Benefits of 1:1
❖My classroom has become a place where I can experiment with
new and innovative pedagogical techniques, and my students can
create new knowledge #om multiple sources. The limitation of the
traditional classroom has been washed away and the power of the
information age is engrained into teaching and learning on a daily
basis.
❖Empowers my students to establish effective organization methods
and maintain that organization. A!owing students access to these
devices has bridged the technology gap for students, helping them
develop 21st century learning ski!s that would have otherwise gone
underdeveloped.

20. Benefits of 1:1
❖Teaching in a one-to-one environment has afforded me
transformative opportunities for increasing rigor, implementing
creative assessments, and promoting self-directed discovery.
Students learning in a one-to-one environment have access to
information, creativity, and communication, which they can use
in innovative ways to demonstrate new ski!s and knowledge.
❖Students are able to connect ideas to real-world problems.
The
iPad is a tool that makes critical thinking and co!aboration not
only possible, but essential.
