Cycling tourism is a growing market that provides significant economic benefits. It is the second most popular outdoor activity in the US, accounting for 19% of outdoor activities and over $133 billion in economic impact. Cycling tourists are typically male, between ages 45-55, and travel in pairs or small groups. They are motivated by health, nature, and sightseeing. Developing safe biking routes with clear signage and attractions can boost a region's cycling tourism industry and economic impacts, as seen along the Northern Outer Banks route in North Carolina and the Danube Cycling Route in Europe. However, challenges include a lack of investment and data collection on cycling tourism by local governments and tourism organizations.
