The Use of Drugs as a Recreation Essay
In today s society there are many dangers many of which can be avoided and many that cannot.
Such unavoidable dangers are what keep everyone alert on a daily basis even though accidents
are unavoidable the best way of mitigating such things are to expect the unexpected precisely the
reason for so many cautionary measures such as seatbelts in cars, anti venom in medicine, fire
prevention sprinklers in every building, and specially designed structures in building in the case
of a natural disaster. One danger however that is nearly impossible to control or mitigate is the
use of drugs in the form of recreation. In 2010 the leading cause of death in the United States was
drug over doses, claiming the lives of approximately 38,329 people 22,134... Show more content on

Amyl Nitrite has a chemical formula of C5H11ONO and because it is a nitrite and is non reactive
it belongs to the Alkyl groups of elements. Amyl Nitrite is used as a vasodilator in the medical
field meaning that it helps widen the blood vessels by the relaxation of the smooth muscle in the
body and with the proper dosage can help those with heart disease, high cholesterol, and high blood
pressure. The use of the drug in the recreational function is due to the fact that it gives users a rush.
In a person with normal blood pressure the use of Amyl Nitrite expands already normal functioning
blood vessels making blood rush through them at an abnormal rate that the brain and heart are not
used to handling, which, in turn makes the person sustain a drunken state of mind making the
individual light headed, dizzy, relaxation of the muscle making even simple movements seem
difficult, an increases heart rate which can eventually force the heart to over work itself causing a
stroke or deadly heart attack, uncontrolled laughing and giggling, and many users have claimed it
heightens sexual arousal. Amyl Nitrite is a flammable liquid with a scent of pear drops, and is
often sold in bottles. Shaking the bottle and opening the cap, which then releases an aroma that is
inhaled by the user, ingests Amyl Nitrite. What makes this inhalant so dangerous is the fact that

The General Film Essay
The General
Buster Keaton wrote, directed, and acted in the film The General (1926). The silent film is a chase
comedy enriched by realism. Siegfried Kracauer states that film represents reality as it evolves in
time with the aid of cinematic techniques and devices. Film literally photographs reality to record
and reveal physical reality. Physical reality being called material reality, physical existence,
actuality, and simply nature. The movement in the filmThe General emphasizes the motion of the
chase. There is a continuity of suspenseful physical action during many of the scenes where Buster
Keaton s character Johnny Gray is chasing his stolen engine then he himself is being chased once
he gets his engine back. This is continuous throughout the film with non stop motion. In a realistic
tendency, film gives image movement. It recreates stage reality through both actions and characters
and even the surrounding world. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Buster Keaton uses his facial expressions in The General to help tell the story without dialogue
in scenes such as when his character is trapped in silence under the table surrounded by Union
army members. Johnny suppresses a sneeze, gets burned by a cigar, and hears the love of his life,
Annabel, voice. It shows us the facial expression as more subjective than speech or sound. All of
these techniques help create a physical reality, which makes the film realistic. During this sequence
the spectator also gets a point of view shot from the eyes of Buster Keaton s character. When he
looks through the cigar hole in the tablecloth we get a masked

Consumer behaviour in marketing ethics
Marketing can undoubtedly bring benefits to society, although some aspects of marketing may be
questionable on ethical grounds. The aim of this assignment is to raise criticism of marketing and
show that consumer behaviour is affected by ethical issues. Do consumers really care about
marketing ethics?
Ethics is a complex concept to define, and there is an attempt made by contemporary theorists to
highlight ethical behaviour in a marketing context. Issues surrounding marketing ethics and social
responsibility are inherently controversial. An area that causes particular dispute is the question of
the effect of ethical and unethical marketing activity in regards to the purchasing behaviour of
consumers. According to the contemporary theory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The affects led to international outrage among consumers, activists, and international corporations.
There were also reports of human rights abuses, violence to labourers, and terrible working
conditions within Nike s Asian organisations. The consumers hit Nike back with a string of protests
and small boycotts around the country. Nike s image was stained, the case in question highlights
that there are consumers willing to take a stance against theses corporations on ethical grounds.
In the case of McDonalds similar to Nike there are many organisations working against them to
highlight ethical issues concerning the way in which there organisations function. McDonalds
market its products towards the younger generation some may argue the ones who are most easily
influenced. The marketing of McDonalds was based on the materialism that bigger is better such
as the big Mac and super size meals. They targeted children by introducing happy meals which
included a toy character usually associated with Disney movies. There actions were apposed by
activists who raised the issue that there meal are not nutritious. They argued that the eating of food
was historically the practice of eating the healthiest possible food (bearing in mind the constraints
of time and poverty)

Poets of the Tang Dynasty Essay
Throughout human history, our beliefs have influenced our actions. This is why we have studies
like the humanities. During the Tang Dynasty, different religions developing during the time had
enormous influence on what was being produced during the era. When it comes to literature, poets
like Wang Wei, Li Bai, Du Fu, and Bo Juyi expressed their religions through their poetry during the
Tang era. While it was not always directly mentioned in their poetry, there are connections between
the Tang Dynastypoets works and their respective religions. Wang Wei (699 761CE), was a
Buddhist poet that was born in to the upper class in Shanxi. He passed the Chin Shi system a

1170). His poetry really appeals to the senses. One of the ways that Buddhism was introduced to
the Tang Dynasty was by means of a legendary monk: Xuanzang. He traveled to India, while the
city of Chang an suffered from chaos, to study the original Buddhist scripts and later returned to
China to translate all of them and interpret the ideas for the people through his Weishi School
(Wen, 77). The concept of emptiness is very prominent in Buddhism emptiness is neither reality
nor total nothingness. Thus, being and nothingness only differ in name; the ontological statuses
of both are emptiness (76). In Wei s poem, Hermitage at Chung nan Mountain he writes: ...and go
there on a whim to wander alone. But even in all this splendor, things remain empty. I climb to
the headwaters where clouds rise up from emptiness (Davis et al. 1170). The emptiness to which
he is referring is not literal emptiness, but to the underlying unity of all things. Also, the Chung
nan Mountain that he refers to was a part of the well known mountains that draw many followers
of Taoism and Buddhism because of their solitude. When he says Growing older, I grow into the
Tao... he is referring to the way of life that can be achieved by following Buddhist traditions. The
poet Li Bai (701 762CE) was

a.Washington Central knew they did not meet the award criteria with 2 instructors having no
masters degree and was hoping the low bid would compensate. Also engineers with bachelors
command less compensation that engineers with masters.
b.All their trainers were permanent employees working in DC and its possible that if they did not

3.The proposal of Washington Independents is $39,286 less than the Government estimate. What
factors do you think affect this difference?
The government may have estimated significant travel and lodging expenses for the instructors. But
the instructors at Washington Independents were all within 15 miles of each training location. This
significantly reduced travel expense e.g rental cars, airfares, and possibly eliminated additional
lodging expenses e.g hotels.
4. Los Angeles Quality has the highest proposed price. What factors do you think affect this
difference?
The 11 instructors that need to travel from LA to DC is a significant factor affecting the price.
The main price difference was the LA estimate to provide training at the Washington DC location.
Los Angeles proposed prices for all training locations were on target or very close within $2,000.00
of the government estimates; except for Washington, DC location where there was a

Music Programs Should be Kept in Schools Essay
All school districts should retain music programs in their schools. Probably the most well known
supposed benefit of involvement in a music program is the Mozart Effect. The Mozart Effect
claims that performance on tasks of spatiotemporal reasoning may be improved for ten fifteen
minutes immediately after listening to part of a Mozart piano sonata or similarly complex music
(ДЊrnДЌec, Wilson, and Prior, 580). While the Mozart Effect has little to back it, there are still
many reasons music and other fine arts belong in schools.
Spatiotemporal reasoning is related to activities involving space and time such as memory, mental
rotation and visualization. However, studies have proven that benefits are inconclusive. Many
studies such as one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One such theory involves private music instruction (ДЊrnДЌec, Wilson, and Prior 582). One on
one private lessons can promote the life long need to learn. Music training started at an early age
can improve the brain s ability to process different tones and patterns. This can benefit a person
later in life when he or she is trying to focus in a room full of background noise.
Ear training, the ability to discern subtleties in pitch and timing, ( Hearing the Music par. 4)
increases aptitude in children and adults when trying to learn a new language. Musicians are better
able to pick out these changing subtleties in speech and tones than non musicians. This skill, when
applied to the learning disabled, improves speech comprehension ( Hearing the Music par. 4).
A 2003 study indicates that two years of music lessons can improve performance on arithmetic tests
(Rauscher and LeMieux qtd. in ДЊrnДЌec, Wilson, and Prior 583). In fact, music lessons can
boost IQ levels simply because they provide a learning opportunity. The most widely cited neuro
scientific theory is one done by Leng and Shaw in 1991 which states:
Music resonates with inherent neuronal firing patterns throughout the brain; thus, music listening
and music instruction can prime the brain for improved performance on spatiotemporal and other
cognitive tasks. (qtd. in ДЊrnДЌec, Wilson, and Prior 585)
These other cognitive tasks include not only arithmetic, but reading, verbal

Organic Vs. Conventional Farming
Organic farming, a new and upcoming industry is booming, however people are beginning to
scrutinize the price of organic and naturally grown food and the validity of it s value to health.
Consumers paying the lofty price for their organic food contend it is saving them trips to the doctor
and protecting them from the countless stacks of future hospital bills with regard to poor health.
Consequently, to all the other people still buying into the cancer causing products produced by
conventional farming known worldwide as healthy food, are beginning to be influence by the
organic hype prompting this population to become more aware of how harmful these conventional
products are to our health. Unfortunately, the expense of organic foodwill continue to dissuade
people away from buying them. The issues that formulate the ongoing debate over organic versus
conventional farming are safety, price and production. Organic and locally grown foods are
becoming such an increasingly popular way of life in many different parts of the world, so much
so, that some countries such as Bulgaria, Hungary, Austria, Greece etc. have completely eliminated
the use of unnatural things to produce their food such as genetically modified organisms (GMO s),
chemicals, and spraying fertilizers on their crops to clean them. The people of these countries have
identified how harmful these defective products are to the environment and more importantly, their
bodies. Farmers who use chemicals and pesticides

Relationship between China-Japan, China-Australia and...
In this section I will be detailing and comparing the relationships between China Japan, China
Australia, and China Venezuela. I am first going to start with the relationship between China and
Japan. I will begin with the time frame between the years of 1949 1969. During this time, China
sees Japan as a threat, which is not surprising because of Japan s assault against China in the 1890s
to 1920s, Japans brutal occupation of China in the 1930s and 1940s and Japan s role in America s
containment strategy against China. China counters Japan by forming a military alliance with the
Soviet Union in 1950. This alliance was indirectly directed at the United Statesbut primarily
directed against Japan. China tried to encourage Japan to have better relations by playing upon
Japanese war guilt and issues of Japanese behavior in the 1930s and 40s. This didn t work in the
political dimension of the relationship. China felt that better relations with Japan would be useful,
both politically and economically. But Japan would not normalize relations because of its close
relationship with the United States and the nationalists. On the economic front, things were
different, as trade started to grow. The countries are so close to one another that it made sense.
Meanwhile, Japan is still recovering from the war, but is recovering rapidly and becomes an
important potential partner for China. In the 1960s the forming of a trade relationship began. The
two countries assign some memorandums of

Visual Pleasure And Narrative Cinema
From an issue that was discussed in class, we discussed about the gaze. In Laura Mulvey s Visual
Pleasure and Narrative Cinema she discusses about scopophilia, which is the pleasure in looking
which also incorporates exhibitionism (pleasure in being looked at). This term also applies to
cinema. She focuses on the idea of the male gazein cinema, where films are created in favor of the
male audience. Thus the action of cinema compromises of women as image, man are bearer of
the look . Mulveys states that women in the film industry are catogarized on two levels, where
woman are seen as erotic objects for the characters within the film and also erotic objects for the
spectators of the film. She then moves on to criticize famed director Alfred Hitchcocks film Rear
Windowfor how he portrayed woman in the film. Alfred Hitchcock s movie correlates to Mulvey
s ideas which support her theories of scopophilia and voyeurism in cinema, she believed that the
film exploits the male gaze and how it antagonises woman in an anti feminism manner. In the film,
the main actor is restricted in his apartment due to his broken leg from his latest assigned project.
He spends most of his time watching his neighbours from his window and later comes to suspect
one of his neighbour murdering his bed ridden wife when we suddenly disappears from sight.
Hitchcock successfully implies voyeurism through main actor James Stewart s character in the film,

Research Paper On Indus River Valley Civilization
Ancient Egypt
Egyptian civilization began around 5000 BC and began to flourish in 3000 BC. Generally ancient
Egyptian history is seperated into three kingdoms the old kingdon, middle, and new kingdom. The
old kingdom (2686BC 2134BC) is the time period where most of what we think of ancient Egypt

texts, study medicine, and find new battle tactics. The Egyptians were polytheists and had a
pantheon of gods, they believed the pharoah to be the god Horus and was thus treated as
such.Egyptian society was more egalitarian than other societies, women could own property and

Character Analysis
Erin Pattee Brockovich:
Erin, a single mother at 33, is the protagonist in the film. She is shown struggling to find work to
support
her three children who become the driving force for her decisions for a large part of the story.
Initially, Erin displays an attitude that would put her at Stage 1 and Stage 3 of Kohlberg s model
of moral
development. In the first scene she is desperately trying to land a job as a doctor s assistant and
narrates a variety of interests that she possess, which were quite varying, and continually stresses
upon
the fact she is a single mother , with a family of three to provide for.

motorbikes to look after her children. However when he does not receive due appreciation from Erin
who at this point is completely involved in the Hinkley case, he decides to walk out on her. This
shows
that George was at Stage 2 of Kohlberg s moral development model. He was taking care of Erin s
children in order to win s Erin s love and when he did not get due attention he decided to leave.
Later in the story we see George coming back to Erin when he notices her efforts bringing in
results. At
this point his actions may put him at Stage 3 i.e. Interpersonal Concordance because he comes back
to
Erin and her children at their apparent time of need, to show that he is a good family member.
Event Analysis

Auditors And The International Financial Reporting Standards
Introduction: Auditors, accountants, and companies must comply with the regulations as
recommended by the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Disputes concerning
convergence issues and compliance may arise between companies and the auditors. In the case of
dispute, the companies and the auditor should consider alternative dispute resolving mechanisms
which are faster, less expensive and less adversarial than traditional litigation.
Reason for Conflict: Audited financial statements may be a source of dispute between the auditor
and management. The process of audit resolution would entail negotiating them. Knapp (1985, p.
202) proposes the way that auditors approach these conflicts play a big role on the auditors
independence and the content of the results and the credibility of the financial statements.
Controversy threatens the success of the firm, resolving controversy will help reduce the agency
cost hence minimizing the expenses to be incurred. Resolving audit disputes would also be serving
the interest of the shareholders.
Areas of Dispute: Audit disputes may arise in areas such as fraud investigations, malpractice claims,
fee disputes, the purpose of internal auditors and the appropriate application of the accepted
accounting practices.
How The Conflict Arises: In these cases, auditor s must inform their clients about their roles and the
responsibility of the companies accounting function against those of the external auditors. When the

Devolution And The Scottish Parliament Essay
Within the United Kingdom, a recurring issue has been raised regarding the political position of
Scotland and how the Scottish Parliament could better govern the country. To establish whether the
quality of life could be improved for the Scottish people, key events, devolution, and the Scottish
Parliament must be evaluated and analysed. The argument for greater power in decision making
and the ability to implement change for the citizens of Scotland, has been central to Scottish politics
for some time.
The process of establishing devolution for Scotland began with the Scotland Act 1978, which
made way for a referendum on devolution and attempted to gain more power and legislature
abilities for Scotland. The rise of the SNP forced the Labour Government of James Callaghan to
react. The terms of this Act stated 40% of the entire electorate had to vote yes for devolution and
the establishment of a Scottish Assembly, this included those who did not vote which were
counted as a no vote. The 1979 Referendum, on 1st March, saw a majority of 52% in favour of
devolution, to 48% against. At first glance it appears Scotland was successful in its referendum,
however only 32.9% of the electorate had joined the majority, meaning the 40% required to
achieve devolution was not met. With this failure to achieve devolution, the SNP backed a Tory
motion of no confidence in the Labour government which saw the 1979 election being called by
just one vote. The 1979 election saw the rise of

Expeditions by Spanish Explorers in Spanish Expeditions...
This book is about how William Foster produces eleven maps of the expeditions that took place
from Northeastern Mexico during the years of 1689 to 1768. Foster also explains the diary
records kept in each expedition as the Spanish explorers passed through Texas. This book also
deals with how the Spanish had to overcome the Indian threats that arose during the seventy nine
years of the Spanish expedition. The main purpose of this book is to study the routes followed and
the important events that occurred during each of the eleven expeditions that took place in Texas.
The book Spanish Expeditions into Texas (1689 1768) by William C. Foster has thirteen
chapters. In chapter One through Two the author talks about three diaries that were found
during the expedition. The first diary the author talks about is De Leon s personal diary and
how it is translated into the English language. The second is Juan Bautista Chapa s diary
account which talks about the history of Nuevo Reino De Leon. The third one is about a letter
found during 1690 expedition, it was from Fray D. Massanet s to Don Carlos de Siguenz which
was also translated into the English language. Chapter Three is based on Governor s Alonso De
Leon s 1690 expedition. This chapter is a continuation of what chapter one and two talk about. In

The Nature Of God And Morality Essay
The herd, being anxious that the individual should act in its interests, has invented various devices
for causing the individual s interest to be in harmony with hat of the herd. One of these... is
morality (Russell, 17), said by Bertrand Russell and highlights the intentions and efforts of morality.
Moralityarose for the good and the survival of the race, but was it the source of social evolution or
that of a all powerful and good God? This was the source of the debate between christianity and
atheism, or William Craig and Walter Armstrong. The ultimate question was not if you need faith or
God to have ethicsand moral order, but does God need to exist in order for moral order and value
to be established and practiced. Did ethics arise from a God to retain moral order, or was it a
part of social and biological evolution in order to continue to advance and to establish social
order. Throughout the text will explore and distinguish the existence of God and morality
through the arguments three main points in the following: if God does not exist then objective
moral values do not exist, objective moral values do exist, and Therefore God does or does not
exist. The first major point of the argument is: if God does not exist, objective moral values do not
exist. Which could be a valid argument, if you have faith or believe in a God that creates order,
however for those without faith, like Atheist, this argument is invalid. This argument is easily

Homework Isn’t The Answer
Homework Isn t The AnswerPrioritize; this is an idea that I was taught to make use of at a very

most value at that current time. It is an unrealistic idea for college bound students to be able to
complete all of the home learning as well as all of our other daily expectations. Over the last ten
years, children in grades 3 12 have seen assigned homework increase up to 40%. I personally
have four teachers who told me to expect 2 hours of homework a night. At least I have a choice

overcrowded so I can t switch to a more reasonable teacher of the subject... and too bad I need

Persuasive Essay Bully
Today s News: A 13 year old student, stole the self esteem of a young child, and made this young
child commit suicide. If you think this is horrible, it get worse. Half of the children in America are
bullies. Bullying is not something new, it has happened before. Bullying is a big issue if we don t
stop it, it can get out of hand. Bullies should be held criminally responsible for their actions due to
them making others harm themselves, not stopping no it s harming others, and even taking bullying
online. As a result, bullies should be held criminally responsible for their actions. Do you ever
feel so paper thin: like a house of cards: One blow from caving in. This is a quote from Katy
Perry s song called, `Firework This text describes how a child feels when he/she get bullied. Getting
bullied can get out of control, that victims commit suicide. According to, Are Bullies Criminals,
research reveals that, Bullying ruins kids lives. It can even cause kids to commit suicide. Bullies
should be punished as severely as possible. For example, a 15 year old girl, named Phoebe,
hanged herself, . . . The Mean Girls followed Phoebe around, calling her names, threatening her and
urging other to exclude her. In other words the author is saying that, bullies are making the victims
harm themselves. As a result 4400 deaths are caused by bullying per year. Viruses harm devices
like bullies harm innocent kids, either physically or mentally. Bullies make their victims feel

Observing A Third-Grade Classroom Environment
Observing a third grade classroom environment was interesting to find out what they do on a daily

dancing around and also running outside playing with the kids. Another aspect of observation of
kids at the daycare was cognitive development and how they use interaction, directions, and
behavior.
First of all, Physical development is shown in the classroom when the child is running in or outside.
Seeing this the kids then understand the meaning of play time. This would be shown in the early
childhood motor development. This is how they can affect mastery of complex motor skills. When
play spaces are properly designed and equipped, young children respond eagerly

Changes in Human Behavior Based on Social Situations and...
The study of human interaction is a part of the study of social psychology. How humans interact
in social situations has long been an area of much curiosity among people who study human
behavior. Do we change when we are in the company of others? Do we conform to certain
societal rules even though we may not agree with them? What do we get out of the way that we
interact with others acceptance, satisfaction or misery? Undoubtedly, there are cultural factors
that play a part in how we act with others. What kind of society one lives in culturally and
politically speaking can play a major role in how people interact with one another. For example,
someone living in China will interact with others in a way that someone from the United States
will because the cultures and the political climate are so different. This paper will look at a couple
of ways in which humanbehaviorchanges based on social situations and will look at the precursors
and consequences of those behaviors in terms of social psychologyconcepts. It will then address
whether or not those certain behaviors that are exhibited necessitate therapeutic intervention.
Groupthink is a phenomenon that was first brought to the attention of the psychological community
by a social psychologist named Irving Janis. According to Janis (1972), Groupthink happens when
a group of people makes flawed decisions because group pressures lead to a breakdown of mental
efficiency, reality testing, and moral judgment (p. 9). Some

Why Vaccination Should Be Mandatory

Why Vaccines Should be Required to Attend School
Ever since the invention of the first smallpox vaccine more than two centuries ago, there has been
plenty of controversy over the morality, ethics, effectiveness, and safety of vaccinationand
immunization. It has recently been argued whether laws should be introduced that render some or
all vaccines obligatory for all children (Singer). Parents, health care specialists, nurses, teachers and
children all have an important stake in this issue. Parents argue that it is they who should have the
ultimate decision making right on whether or not to vaccinate their children. Nurses and health care
officials oppose that view on the grounds that by making vaccination rates in children incomplete,
we expose all children to contracting the vaccine preventable diseases. If this is a risk some
parents are willing to take, but others face unwillingly, there is obviously a propitious platform
for debate. It is in fact irresponsible and a violation of good citizen when parents oppose
vaccinating their children. It is important to unify certain rules related to vaccination and not
make it the prerogative of a particular public or private school to decide whether or not to accept
an unvaccinated child. It would only be right to end all debate by passing a binding country wide
law to make certain vaccines (against

Symbolism In Farenheit 451
Bradbury s use of symbolism is apparent in the first chapter, when the protagonist, Guy Montag,
meets Clarisse McClellan, whose face is like a mirror (8). This first impression not only
functions as a descriptor for Clarisse s character, but also introduces the mirror as a symbol and
indicates on the fundamental problem with Montag s society. The novel reflects several dystopian
themes where the government declares everyone free and happy, as M. Camara in his article,
Contemporary Anglo American Dystopian Fiction , emphasizes that the spiritual void prevailing
in the society (79) is caused by the fact that people are spared the pain of reflecting on complex
questions (79). He suggests that totalitarian rule creates a hive of people who... Show more content

Further examples of symbolism relating to the theme of everyone being declared free and
happy are found in the titles of the chapters, such as The Sieve and the Sand (67). The reader
sees this is a sympathetic story from Montag s childhood, where he tries to fill a sieve with sand
and ends up frustrated by the impossibility of the task, here his frustration with the impossibility
of reading and retaining the words of a book. He reasons that if you read fast and read all, maybe
some of the sand will stay in the sieve (74). This shows not only how Montag cannot grasp the full
meaning of what he reads because there are various gaps in his knowledge, but also that sand is
representative of Truth and knowledge while the sieve is representative of how the government
retains certain knowledge from the public and misleads it with false

Making A Band Or Start Writing Music
When people create a band or start writing music, they want money. In the early 20th century, artists
were not receiving the royalties that they should have earned. Enter the first Performing Rights
Organization which is also called a PRO that promised what the artist should be earning, money.
PROs were fine until the organizations realized how much money they can earn. PROs exist for a
reason, but the cost of the license, why they are non profit , and why the artist has to sign with
PRO s that make PROs truly evil. In February 1914, the first PRO in the United States was formed.
Music writers came together and The American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers was
formed. The ASCAP sought out artists, composers, and publishers to... Show more content on

But not all of the artists are under one PRO, so the person must buy a license from each PRO
that represents the artist s music that they would be playing (Public Performance Licenses and
Music for Your Small Business). If the person thinks they can get away with not paying, think
again. PROs are always in court suing small businesses for copyright infringement. On average,
the lawsuit ends up being $700 $30,000 depending on the severity of the infringement.
Depending on what license they are applying for, the cost varies. License fees range from $300
$500 and could cost more depending on some variables like if the music would be for a dance
studio or for a church (Public Performance Licenses and Music for Your Small Business). A PRO
might sound like a good thing, right? But you re wrong because the PROs goal is to make a
profit for the company. An organization s job is to make money, and then they pay taxes on the
revenue they receive. If an organization says they are non profit, they usually do not have to pay
taxes on the revenue they earn. PROs like ASCAP and BMI say they are non profit, which
means more profit for the artist, right? Wrong (Why You Should Think Twice Before Joining
ASCAP, BMI or SESAC). Members of the ASCAP earn 86.5 cent for every dollar that the ASCAP
earns. But isn t the other 13.5 cents profit? But PROs do that for one specific reason, to trap artist.

Latter Day Saints (LDS) and the Catholic faith. I would like to know more about their beliefs,
holidays, and family traditions. Some of the main beliefs in the LDS culture are Jesusis the Savior

Some of the main beliefs for the Catholic faith are the Bible, the different Saints, and baptism.

They then told him that he would be the prophet of the new church (Smith, n.d.). Joseph Smith s
own account of that day says,
My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I
might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able
to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was
right (for at this time it had never entered into my heart that all were wrong) and which I should
join. (Smith,n.d.)
He then became the first prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The LDS
Church believes that he translated the gold plates to what is now called the Book of Mormon, the
main scripture for the LDS church (Dirkmaat,2013). It is also believed that he received many
revelations from God. He was persecuted throughout his life and ended up dying a martyr at the
age of 38 (McKeever,n.d.).
Holidays in the LDS faith are quite the same as the rest world. The most popular holiday
that they celebrate is Christmas. They believe that Christmas is a time to celebrate and remember
Jesus Christ s birth. Thomas Monson, a prophet of the LDS church states, When we have the spirit
of Christmas, we remember Him whose birth we commemorate at this season of the year. We
contemplate that first Christmas day, foretold by the prophets of old. (Monson, 2008). They believe

Application Of Dgs For Local Network Stability
Introduction: Due to increased concern on energy crisis and environmental issues, power
industry is shifting their power production from conventional power sources to renewable energy
sources, and is incorporating it into the grid utility in the form of distributed generations (DGs).
The application of DGs can enhance reliability and stability of the local network, and can reach
benefit to the supplier by reducing system losses and investment on a new transmission line due
to increased power consumption [1]. Power generation in the form of DGs for local and grid
utility can create issues as many as it may solve. Therefore, a microgrid concept is evolved to

Inverters are able to supply controlled voltage and frequency depending on the control algorithms
[3]. The characteristics of inverters are significantly different from the conventional generators;
therefore, specific control algorithms are required for a stable microgrid operation [4, 5].
There are a number of publications on droop based control for facilitating high reliability and
avoiding complexity of a supervisory control system [6, 12]. The droop based control algorithms
are popular due to their coordination capability among various power rating units together with
flexibility and reliability. The concept of droop based power control is valid for the both high
voltage (HV) transmission line and low voltage (LV) distribution line, although it has some
limitations.
Problem formulation: To achieve consumer satisfaction in power supply and harness renewable
energy, microgrids design and control are essential issues for reliable operation. As the
characteristics of the distribution network and high volume power electronics penetration into the
network are significantly different from the conventional power system, several issues are raised.
Some of the issues, which are a promised field for future research, are described shortly below:
Distribution network: In a LV distribution network, the well known P/f droop control requires much
more effort than the P/V droop because predominated resistive network that naturally connects

Improving the quality of a company s product offering is consistent with achieving responsiveness,
as is developing new products with features that existing products lack. In other words, achieving
superior quality and innovation is integral to achieving superior responsiveness to customers.
Another factor that stands out in any discussion of responsiveness to customers is the need to
customize goods and services to the unique demands of individual customers or customer groups.
For example, the proliferation of soft drinks and beers can be viewed partly as a response to this
trend. Better customer responsiveness can further be provided with superior design, and superior

It is good to consider an organization as a system because a system links inputs and outputs and
the flow of information from one point to the other. Organizations also focus on cross functional
teams and it is a combination of complex resources. Organizations have a need which is defined
and goals to reach their mission. People work as entities and they are a part of the organization.
The work of Porter is significant in the emphasis of the business process. He says value chain is a
comprehensive collection of all the activities that are performed to design, produce, and market,
deliver, and support a product line (Porter, 1985). When we combine the concept of the value chain
and system to the organization we understand that organizations span across functional departments
like finance, marketing, sales, and support etc.
Organizations implementing BPM Systems
One of the influential factors on implementation success that emerges from research, trade literature
and practice is the level of process orientation within an organization. (Parkes, 2002). Typical
advantages of implementing a BPM system in an organization are reduced lead times, fewer hand
off errors, and more flexibility to change the structure of supported business processes. (Parkes,
2002). In the research community, there is some consensus that the essence of a BPMS is the
functionality that has been attributed historically to a workflow management system. (WfMS). (Van

Pros And Cons Of Zero Tolerance Policing
This study is aimed to investigate zero tolerance policing and the implementation of its policies
into society. By focusing on the pros and cons of this type of policing it will answer the overall
question on whether or not zero tolerance policing is efficient and effective within society. The
theories behind zero tolerance policing can provide specific reasons for why or why not policing
needs more or less discretion when performing certain functions. There are certain legal aspects that
back up decisions made by officers and targeting the statistical data provides the rates of
effectiveness with zero tolerance policing. Zero tolerance policing is data based upon
implementation, the needs of the people backed with the results of implementation decide which
statistical method of policing is best for society. Based on the finding from the data of societal
measurement and effectiveness the decision on whether or not to continue pursuing zero tolerance
policing or revert to other methods can be completely valid to specific fact based results.

Intangible services are much harder to quantify.
Performance Management Cycle
Key performance indicators (KPIs) are formed as part of the performance and appraisal process to
measure the output of an individual. The performance appraisal allows a comparison to be made of
the actual performance against expected performance (KPIs), which is linked to feedback and
whether the individual has warranted a reward.
However, there are many potential problems with the performance appraisal system. The process
can become a bureaucratic process with managers seeing it as a tick box exercise to be
completed once a year. There could be a lack of understanding of the objectives by the employee,
or the organisation may not have a clear strategy and furthermore the process is subjective and open
to human bias. It is also very difficult to quantify individual performance such as intangible
elements, as mentioned earlier. So it could be argued that the process is not very transparent.
To overcome this, Beer et al. introduced the Harvard Model (Gilmore. S, 2009, p.9) which takes
into account a wider range of stakeholders interests to provide an input into the appraisal process
which allows the reduction of a bias opinion of just one person. It is stated as reduction, as the
process is still subjective and open to a range of perceptual errors although

The Bet By Anton Chekhov Analysis
The Bet , by Anton Chekhov, is an original story that is about a Banker and a Lawyer. Chekhov
uses many elements of literature to show that society s opinion on prison has different viewpoints.
Through this story Chekhov writes about two modern sides of prison, capital punishment and life
imprisonment. He writes about a Banker and a Lawyer that set a foolish bet of two million dollars
for fifteen years in solitary confinement. Anton Chekhov, shows this story through characterization
and imagery. The first literary element Chekhov uses is imagery. Chekhov uses imagery
powerfully to express particular point within the story. In the twenty ninth paragraph, the
Banker walks in on the Lawyer and notices, He was a skeleton with the skin drawn tight over his
bones, with long curls like a woman s and a shaggy beard. His face was yellow with an earthy
tint in it, his cheeks were hollow, his back long and narrow, and the hand on which his shaggy
head was propped was so thin and delicate that it was dreadful to look at it. His hair was already
streaked with silver, and seeing his emaciated, aged looking face, no one would have believed that
he was only forty. (Chekhov). Chekhov uses breathtaking imagery to show the reader that this aged,
worn out, forty year old man, was once the young lawyer. This description helps provide the
reader with a strong image of how the weary young man has changed and evolved into a pitiful
and demented man since he has been in solitary confinement. Once the Lawyer is found lying
asleep the Banker notices a note, in this note the Lawyer states, I have heard the singing of the
sirens, and the strains of the shepherds pipes; I have touched the wings of comely devils who
flew down to converse with me of God... In your books I have flung myself into the bottomless
pit, performed miracles, slain, burned towns, preached new religions, conquered whole kingdoms.
(Chekhov). The Lawyer writes this imagery in his letter to explain why he has chosen to leave the
house before the bet was up. Chekhov also writes, When the banker had read this he laid the page
on the table, kissed the strange man on the head, and went out of the lodge, weeping. At no other

Aesthetic Disinterestedness Analysis
Jameson Hoffman HON 3310 Dr. Hayan Charara November 17, 2017 Disinterestedness and
Distance in Modernist Aesthetics In his essay On the Origins of Aesthetic Disinterestedness
Jerome Stolnitz describes how aesthetic criticism began with Lord Shaftesbury s idea of the
virtuous man as a spectator, devoted to the very survey and contemplation of beauty in manners
and morals, the initial practical significance of disinterested is supplanted altogether by the
perceptual , a definition that would eventually grow from an ethical one to an aesthetic one (133).
While much of the tradition of aesthetic theory is built on this idea of the necessity of being
disinterested in the object in question, however, the implied inability to judge the aesthetic of
objects a viewer is interested in is extremely limiting. Immanuel Kant, an inheritor of this idea,
goes further and completely rules out any judgement from an interested viewer: everyone must
admit that a judgment about beauty, in which the least interest mingles, is very partial and is not
a pure judgment of taste (2). Both men, being of the 18th century, could never have anticipated a
Modernist aesthetic which relies heavily on the beauty of utility and inherently requires an
interested spectator. The aesthetic principles of Modernism are in many ways even entirely
incompatible with the kind of aesthetic disinterestedness Kant espoused. We must first decipher
exactly what Kant meant by an interested viewer. Kant distinguishes between adherent and free
beauty; with free beauty there is presupposed no concept of any purpose which the manifold of
the given object is to serve while human beauty (i.e. of a man, a woman, or a child), the beauty
of a horse, or a building (be it church, palace, arsenal, or summer house), presupposes a general
concept of the purpose which determines what the thing is to be... It is therefore adherent beauty
(15). To Kant the judgement of free beauty is pure because the viewer doesn t project their own
ideas and wishes onto it or become swayed by the physical pleasure that accompanies it (15). A
functional object which is good for the thing itself in accordance with its purpose, however, is a
hindrance to the the

how he learned his music and how he became famous. On February 6, 1945 in Saint Ann,

him to Kingston s Trechtown neighborhood. As a teenager in Kingston he became friends with

Siegfried Kracauer states that film represents reality as it evolves in time with the aid of cinematic techniques and devices. Film literally photographs reality to record and reveal physical reality. Physical reality being called material reality, physical existence, actuality, and simply nature. The movement in the filmThe General emphasizes the motion of the chase. There is a continuity of suspenseful physical action during many of the scenes where Buster Keaton s character Johnny Gray is chasing his stolen engine then he himself is being chased once he gets his engine back. This is continuous throughout the film with non stop motion. In a realistic tendency, film gives image movement. It recreates stage reality through both actions and characters and even the surrounding world. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Probably the most well known supposed benefit of involvement in a music program is the Mozart Effect. The Mozart Effect claims that performance on tasks of spatiotemporal reasoning may be improved for ten fifteen minutes immediately after listening to part of a Mozart piano sonata or similarly complex music (ДЊrnДЌec, Wilson, and Prior, 580). While the Mozart Effect has little to back it, there are still many reasons music and other fine arts belong in schools. This can benefit a person later in life when he or she is trying to focus in a room full of background noise. Ear training, the ability to discern subtleties in pitch and timing, ( Hearing the Music par. 4) increases aptitude in children and adults when trying to learn a new language. Musicians are better able to pick out these changing subtleties in speech and tones than non musicians. This skill, when applied to the learning disabled, improves speech comprehension ( Hearing the Music par. 4). A 2003 study indicates that two years of music lessons can improve performance on arithmetic tests (Rauscher and LeMieux qtd. in ДЊrnДЌec, Wilson, and Prior 583). In fact, music lessons can boost IQ levels simply because they provide a learning opportunity. The most widely cited neuro scientific theory is one done by Leng and Shaw in 1991 which states: Music resonates with inherent neuronal firing patterns throughout the brain; thus, music listening and music instruction can prime the brain for improved performance on spatiotemporal and other cognitive tasks. I am first going to start with the relationship between China and Japan. I will begin with the time frame between the years of 1949 1969. During this time, China sees Japan as a threat, which is not surprising because of Japan s assault against China in the 1890s to 1920s, Japans brutal occupation of China in the 1930s and 1940s and Japan s role in America s containment strategy against China. China counters Japan by forming a military alliance with the Soviet Union in 1950. This alliance was indirectly directed at the United Statesbut primarily directed against Japan. China tried to encourage Japan to have better relations by playing upon Japanese war guilt and issues of Japanese behavior in the 1930s and 40s. This didn t work in the political dimension of the relationship. China felt that better relations with Japan would be useful, both politically and economically. But Japan would not normalize relations because of its close relationship with the United States and the nationalists. On the economic front, things were different, as trade started to grow. The countries are so close to one another that it made sense. Meanwhile, Japan is still recovering from the war, but is recovering rapidly and becomes an important potential partner for China. In Laura Mulvey s Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema she discusses about scopophilia, which is the pleasure in looking which also incorporates exhibitionism (pleasure in being looked at). This term also applies to cinema. She focuses on the idea of the male gazein cinema, where films are created in favor of the male audience. Thus the action of cinema compromises of women as image, man are bearer of the look . Mulveys states that women in the film industry are catogarized on two levels, where woman are seen as erotic objects for the characters within the film and also erotic objects for the spectators of the film. She then moves on to criticize famed director Alfred Hitchcocks film Rear Windowfor how he portrayed woman in the film. Alfred Hitchcock s movie correlates to Mulvey s ideas which support her theories of scopophilia and voyeurism in cinema, she believed that the film exploits the male gaze and how it antagonises woman in an anti feminism manner. In the film, the main actor is restricted in his apartment due to his broken leg from his latest assigned project. Disputes concerning convergence issues and compliance may arise between companies and the auditors. To establish whether the quality of life could be improved for the Scottish people, key events, devolution, and the Scottish Parliament must be evaluated and analysed. The argument for greater power in decision making and the ability to implement change for the citizens of Scotland, has been central to Scottish politics for some time. The process of establishing devolution for Scotland began with the Scotland Act 1978, which made way for a referendum on devolution and attempted to gain more power and legislature abilities for Scotland. The rise of the SNP forced the Labour Government of James Callaghan to react. The terms of this Act stated 40% of the entire electorate had to vote yes for devolution and the establishment of a Scottish Assembly, this included those who did not vote which were counted as a no vote. The 1979 Referendum, on 1st March, saw a majority of 52% in favour of devolution, to 48% against. At first glance it appears Scotland was successful in its referendum, however only 32.9% of the electorate had joined the majority, meaning the 40% required to achieve devolution was not met. With this failure to achieve devolution, the SNP backed a Tory motion of no confidence in the Labour government which saw the 1979 election being called by just one vote. Do we conform to certain societal rules even though we may not agree with them? What do we get out of the way that we interact with others acceptance, satisfaction or misery? Undoubtedly, there are cultural factors that play a part in how we act with others. What kind of society one lives in culturally and politically speaking can play a major role in how people interact with one another. For example, someone living in China will interact with others in a way that someone from the United States will because the cultures and the political climate are so different. Parents argue that it is they who should have the ultimate decision making right on whether or not to vaccinate their children. Nurses and health care officials oppose that view on the grounds that by making vaccination rates in children incomplete, we expose all children to contracting the vaccine preventable diseases. If this is a risk some parents are willing to take, but others face unwillingly, there is obviously a propitious platform for debate. It is in fact irresponsible and a violation of good citizen when parents oppose vaccinating their children. It is important to unify certain rules related to vaccination and not make it the prerogative of a particular public or private school to decide whether or not to accept an unvaccinated child. It would only be right to end all debate by passing a binding country wide law to make certain vaccines (against ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. Symbolism In Farenheit 451 Bradbury s use of symbolism is apparent in the first chapter, when the protagonist, Guy Montag, meets Clarisse McClellan, whose face is like a mirror (8). This first impression not only functions as a descriptor for Clarisse s character, but also introduces the mirror as a symbol and indicates on the fundamental problem with Montag s society. The novel reflects several dystopian themes where the government declares everyone free and happy, as M. Camara in his article, Contemporary Anglo American Dystopian Fiction , emphasizes that the spiritual void prevailing in the society (79) is caused by the fact that people are spared the pain of reflecting on complex questions (79). He reasons that if you read fast and read all, maybe some of the sand will stay in the sieve (74). This shows not only how Montag cannot grasp the full meaning of what he reads because there are various gaps in his knowledge, but also that sand is representative of Truth and knowledge while the sieve is representative of how the government retains certain knowledge from the public and misleads it with false ... In the early 20th century, artists were not receiving the royalties that they should have earned. Enter the first Performing Rights Organization which is also called a PRO that promised what the artist should be earning, money. PROs were fine until the organizations realized how much money they can earn. PROs exist for a reason, but the cost of the license, why they are non profit , and why the artist has to sign with PRO s that make PROs truly evil. On average, the lawsuit ends up being $700 $30,000 depending on the severity of the infringement. Depending on what license they are applying for, the cost varies. License fees range from $300 $500 and could cost more depending on some variables like if the music would be for a dance studio or for a church (Public Performance Licenses and Music for Your Small Business). A PRO might sound like a good thing, right? But you re wrong because the PROs goal is to make a profit for the company. An organization s job is to make money, and then they pay taxes on the revenue they receive. If an organization says they are non profit, they usually do not have to pay taxes on the revenue they earn. PROs like ASCAP and BMI say they are non profit, which means more profit for the artist, right? Wrong (Why You Should Think Twice Before Joining ASCAP, BMI or SESAC). Application Of Dgs For Local Network Stability Introduction: Due to increased concern on energy crisis and environmental issues, power industry is shifting their power production from conventional power sources to renewable energy sources, and is incorporating it into the grid utility in the form of distributed generations (DGs). The application of DGs can enhance reliability and stability of the local network, and can reach benefit to the supplier by reducing system losses and investment on a new transmission line due to increased power consumption [1]. Power generation in the form of DGs for local and grid utility can create issues as many as it may solve. Therefore, a microgrid concept is evolved to coordinate among sources, loads, and energy storage devices for maintaining... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Inverters are able to supply controlled voltage and frequency depending on the control algorithms [3]. The characteristics of inverters are significantly different from the conventional generators; therefore, specific control algorithms are required for a stable microgrid operation [4, 5]. There are a number of publications on droop based control for facilitating high reliability and avoiding complexity of a supervisory control system [6, 12]. The droop based control algorithms are popular due to their coordination capability among various power rating units together with flexibility and reliability. The concept of droop based power control is valid for the both high voltage (HV) transmission line and low voltage (LV) distribution line, although it has some limitations. Problem formulation: To achieve consumer satisfaction in power supply and harness renewable energy, microgrids design and control are essential issues for reliable operation. As the characteristics of the distribution network and high volume power electronics penetration into the network are significantly different from the conventional power system, several issues are raised. Some of the issues, which are a promised field for future research, are described shortly below: Distribution network: In a LV distribution network, the well known P/f droop control requires much more effort than the P/V droop because predominated resistive network that naturally connects active power with ... It is good to consider an organization as a system because a system links inputs and outputs and the flow of information from one point to the other. Organizations also focus on cross functional teams and it is a combination of complex resources. Organizations have a need which is defined and goals to reach their mission. People work as entities and they are a part of the organization. The work of Porter is significant in the emphasis of the business process. He says value chain is a comprehensive collection of all the activities that are performed to design, produce, and market, deliver, and support a product line (Porter, 1985). When we combine the concept of the value chain and system to the organization we understand that organizations span across functional departments like finance, marketing, sales, and support etc. Organizations implementing BPM Systems One of the influential factors on implementation success that emerges from research, trade literature and practice is the level of process orientation within an organization. (Parkes, 2002). Typical advantages of implementing a BPM system in an organization are reduced lead times, fewer hand off errors, and more flexibility to change the structure of supported business processes. By focusing on the pros and cons of this type of policing it will answer the overall question on whether or not zero tolerance policing is efficient and effective within society. The theories behind zero tolerance policing can provide specific reasons for why or why not policing needs more or less discretion when performing certain functions. There are certain legal aspects that back up decisions made by officers and targeting the statistical data provides the rates of effectiveness with zero tolerance policing. Zero tolerance policing is data based upon implementation, the needs of the people backed with the results of implementation decide which statistical method of policing is best for society. Based on the finding from the data of societal measurement and effectiveness the decision on whether or not to continue pursuing zero tolerance policing or revert to other methods can be completely valid to specific fact based results. Performance Management Cycle Key performance indicators (KPIs) are formed as part of the performance and appraisal process to measure the output of an individual. The performance appraisal allows a comparison to be made of the actual performance against expected performance (KPIs), which is linked to feedback and whether the individual has warranted a reward. However, there are many potential problems with the performance appraisal system. The process can become a bureaucratic process with managers seeing it as a tick box exercise to be completed once a year. There could be a lack of understanding of the objectives by the employee, or the organisation may not have a clear strategy and furthermore the process is subjective and open to human bias. It is also very difficult to quantify individual performance such as intangible elements, as mentioned earlier. So it could be argued that the process is not very transparent. To overcome this, Beer et al. introduced the Harvard Model (Gilmore. S, 2009, p.9) which takes into account a wider range of stakeholders interests to provide an input into the appraisal process which allows the reduction of a bias opinion of just one person. It is stated as reduction, as the process is still subjective and open to a range of perceptual errors although ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. The Bet By Anton Chekhov Analysis The Bet , by Anton Chekhov, is an original story that is about a Banker and a Lawyer. Chekhov uses many elements of literature to show that society s opinion on prison has different viewpoints. Through this story Chekhov writes about two modern sides of prison, capital punishment and life imprisonment. He writes about a Banker and a Lawyer that set a foolish bet of two million dollars for fifteen years in solitary confinement. Anton Chekhov, shows this story through characterization and imagery. The first literary element Chekhov uses is imagery. Chekhov uses imagery powerfully to express particular point within the story. In the twenty ninth paragraph, the Banker walks in on the Lawyer and notices, He was a skeleton with the skin drawn tight over his bones, with long curls like a woman s and a shaggy beard. His face was yellow with an earthy tint in it, his cheeks were hollow, his back long and narrow, and the hand on which his shaggy head was propped was so thin and delicate that it was dreadful to look at it. His hair was already streaked with silver, and seeing his emaciated, aged looking face, no one would have believed that he was only forty. (Chekhov). Chekhov uses breathtaking imagery to show the reader that this aged, worn out, forty year old man, was once the young lawyer. This description helps provide the reader with a strong image of how the weary young man has changed and evolved into a pitiful and demented man since he has been in solitary confinement. Once the Lawyer is found lying asleep the Banker notices a note, in this note the Lawyer states, I have heard the singing of the sirens, and the strains of the shepherds pipes; I have touched the wings of comely devils who flew down to converse with me of God... In your books I have flung myself into the bottomless pit, performed miracles, slain, burned towns, preached new religions, conquered whole kingdoms. (Chekhov). The Lawyer writes this imagery in his letter to explain why he has chosen to leave the house before the bet was up. Chekhov also writes, When the banker had read this he laid the page on the table, kissed the strange man on the head, and went out of the lodge, weeping. At no other time, even when he had ... • 41. Aesthetic Disinterestedness Analysis Jameson Hoffman HON 3310 Dr. Hayan Charara November 17, 2017 Disinterestedness and Distance in Modernist Aesthetics In his essay On the Origins of Aesthetic Disinterestedness Jerome Stolnitz describes how aesthetic criticism began with Lord Shaftesbury s idea of the virtuous man as a spectator, devoted to the very survey and contemplation of beauty in manners and morals, the initial practical significance of disinterested is supplanted altogether by the perceptual , a definition that would eventually grow from an ethical one to an aesthetic one (133). While much of the tradition of aesthetic theory is built on this idea of the necessity of being disinterested in the object in question, however, the implied inability to judge the aesthetic of objects a viewer is interested in is extremely limiting. Immanuel Kant, an inheritor of this idea, goes further and completely rules out any judgement from an interested viewer: everyone must admit that a judgment about beauty, in which the least interest mingles, is very partial and is not a pure judgment of taste (2). Both men, being of the 18th century, could never have anticipated a Modernist aesthetic which relies heavily on the beauty of utility and inherently requires an interested spectator. The aesthetic principles of Modernism are in many ways even entirely incompatible with the kind of aesthetic disinterestedness Kant espoused. We must first decipher exactly what Kant meant by an interested viewer. Kant distinguishes between adherent and free beauty; with free beauty there is presupposed no concept of any purpose which the manifold of the given object is to serve while human beauty (i.e. of a man, a woman, or a child), the beauty of a horse, or a building (be it church, palace, arsenal, or summer house), presupposes a general concept of the purpose which determines what the thing is to be... It is therefore adherent beauty (15). To Kant the judgement of free beauty is pure because the viewer doesn t project their own ideas and wishes onto it or become swayed by the physical pleasure that accompanies it (15).
