This document discusses the differences between CVs and resumes and when each should be used. A CV is used for academic or scholarly purposes and is longer with more details about education, publications, presentations, etc. listed. A resume is a 2-4 page professional snapshot that highlights experience and is targeted to a specific opportunity. A hybrid CV combines elements of both by including career history and results in a longer format than a resume but shorter than a traditional CV. The type of document to use depends on the purpose and industry. Following guidelines and writing an effective career story is important.

Resume, CV, application,
Ah!
There is a lot of confusion about the various materials required in a job search process.
CVs have become more popular and more employers are asking for them instead of resumes.
But
What exactly IS a CV?
And how do you know if you need one?
Hello everyone
My name is Monica Fochtman and I am a
Career Coach and Leadership Consultant
Started my company Sheldrake Consulting
To help clients find their career stories
I am here today to help demystify job search speak
Help you get clear on the differences between CVs and resumes
And why it matters
It’s OK to be confused
I know that feeling
Been there myself
I have Created CVs, Resumes, and hybrid CVs for myself and my clients
A painful but worthwhile experience was taking my own 5 page resume and cutting it to 2 pages.
I have also done the reverse and expanded a resume into a CV hybrid .
I am proud to be a spartan PhD
From the College of Education in 2010
Love to help clients find their career story,
then teach them tools & strategies they need to
Write it well
Let’s get started!
In its purest form, the CV is used to apply for
academic,
tenure track positions at four year universities
The CV represents you and your
Academic, scholarly, or scientific
history and experience
No page limit
I have seen CVs that are 50+ pages
CV is a list, not a detailed explanation of each position
In traditional CV
Not much variation in heading titles or
Order of headings
Education is primary and always listed immediately after contact information
Other headings include
Experience
Research funding
Publications
Presentations
Professional memberships
This is page one of my Academic CV
Notice my name is bolded and centered, with no credentials listed
Contact info
Education and Certifications next
Employment
Left justified
Reverse Chronological Order
No detail or explanation of positions
List
Resume is NOT your life story
It is a brief,
2-4 page
Professional snapshot of
particular positions, skills, experiences, targeted to match the position you are applying for
Share this with my clients all the time- though time consuming, YES you must edit your resume for each position
For most applicants, professional or work experience takes precedence over education
And they have latitude to go longer, 3 to 4 pages
For most new grads, education is listed first, to compensate for not as much experience
New grad resume will be maximum two pages
This is an example from one of my resumes
Applied for a position with a non-profit foundation
Job description Asked for a resume
Knew I had fewer pages to tell my story
This particular resume was 3 pages
Highlighted relevant Director-level experience
Bullets under experience were targeted
to specific position within a specific industry
Condensed other professional positions to show work history without full detail
Put Education last
Non-profit more interested in volunteer management, fundraising, and leadership
Than what degrees I have and from where
Hybrid cars
Part gas, part electric
Best of both worlds
The Modern CV is a hybrid
of the CV historically used for academic positions and the resume
When job description/application calls for a CV
The employer is telling you two things:
They are expecting candidates to have significant experience
They are giving you permission to provide details about that experience
Modern CV is opportunity to showcase your career history
Can include more than would on a resume
Let your bullets tell a story
Demonstrate the results and outcomes you achieved
Resume 2-4 pages
Hybrid CV could be anywhere from 4 to 8 pages, depending on depth and breadth of your experience
In the Hybrid CV you can use whatever headings you want, in whatever order you choose
Remember to make sure that your tense, wording, and formatting are consistent
This section highlights the differences between the traditional and hybrid CV
Traditional CV
Left justified
Dates primary
Then course and location
Notice this is a list, not a description
Hybrid CV on the right
Utilizes bullets
Is more descriptive
Tells story about the course, course objectives, and students
Hybrid CV is Opportunity to provide detail and outcomes you achieved
How do you know when to submit a CV, resume, or hybrid CV?
If applying for academic, research, teaching, tenure track positions you need
a formal, traditional CV
If posting says resume or CV
Submit a CV
It’s your opportunity to provide more details
But, never send a CV when they ask for a resume
To recap
Job postings contain clues
What and who they are looking for
Your attention to detail
Following directions is the first test
You’ve probably heard that recruiters/HR professionals
Spend only about 6 seconds per resume
Their eyes do a quick visual scan
You want to make sure that you stand out
FOR GOOD!
You have a story
Use tools available to you
To write it well
Put you and your experience in the best light
Thank you for listening in!
Hope to connect with you.
