In 2013, Content Marketing Institute released its first Content Marketing Framework. At the time, its purpose was to serve as a high-level view of the principles that govern the world of brand storytelling. Since then, CMI has worked with more than 100 brands, helping them put these core principles into practice. These partnerships have taught us a lot about which parts of the framework worked, which didn’t, and where we still needed to provide greater clarity and transparency. To reflect the insights we gained – as well as the many shifts that have occurred across the entire digital ecosystem – we’ve streamlined our original discussion, and have added a distinct new process model to each node. What follows is our redesigned Content Marketing Framework.

What does it represent? A “resume” is a one - to two – page document that presents a specific part of your life and employment history in a summarized format to demonstrate to an employer that you can do a particular job. In this sense it answers the following questions:Who you are? What are you seeking?Resume could be also called:Professional job power reportCurriculum vitaeEmployment proposalEtc. 2. However, it may be or not be a tool for obtaining a job!!!Needed: In most cases resumes are required by the employer and are substantial part of the application process that might require additional documents such as: A cover letterAn application form-References listA PortfolioAnother case where resume might be helpful is when requesting an informational interview – in this particular situation the resume provides a point of connection for the job seeker and a point of reference for the employer. Employer might or might not grant the informational interview but the likeliness to have the interview approved is much higher when job seeker is presenting themselves with an official document rather than through a brief phone call. Resume creates long lasting impression.Clear communication is essential factor for a successful job hunt – having clear vision about your objective, skills, work experience, education and accomplishments increases the odds of attracting the attention of the employer that is looking for a person like you!Not Needed: Some jobs such as – some trade or entry level and unskilled positions do not require resumes.Networking – has been one of the best ways for many people to land their dream job. It is easier to approach a hiring manager through a referral of a friend or relative than to just count on being selected among hundreds of resumes of other applicants.Five ways to develop a network of contacts:*Make a list of people you know*Contact them in a systematic way*Present yourself well*Ask contacts for leads*Contact these referrals and ask them for leads.Referral – this is a different way of being introduced to the attention of the hiring manager. As further mentioned friend and family who work at institutions you are interested in should be very much appreciated
Most of the basic information that is presented on this slide is applicable to both paper and electronic resumes. To start off :Length – generally accepted in one to two pagesIf you are a recent college graduate (the last five years):One page resume-If you are looking for a managerial or highly professional position with a lot of experience Two page resumeIf you cannot put all you would like on one page it is better to have two-pages resume rather than one and a half. You can arrange it in a way so that there is plenty of space or good amount of information.Errors – most common once are typographical, grammar and punctuationFind someone else to review and edit your resume If you are reviewing your resume yourself allow a day or two after you have created the first draft, in this way you increase your chances to see the mistakes that you have previously made unintentionally because your eye were so much used to going through and reading the same text over and over again.Appearance – the print must be done by high quality ink-jet printer or laser printer with a word processing software such as WindowsThose requirements can be easily fulfilled at any shop like Kinko’s or StaplesMake sure: The resume is well laid out;Professional lookingThere is good use of white spaceHas no errorsPhotocopying and printing – high quality paper is required as well as individual print outsPhotocopies do not have good quality and the paper that is used is cheapThe paper should be one that includes cotton fibers that have richer texture and speak for qualityGood quality paper colors are – ivory and off-white bone, you can also use grey or light tanNot recommended are red, pink or green colorsStress your accomplishments:Emphasize what you have done do not list duties!!!Communicate skills that you have acquired on the jobHave you had any accomplishments or credential you would like to share if applicableDo not be humble!!!
Types of Resumes:Chronological Resume:The primary feature of this kind of resume is that you are required to:List jobs in order from the most recent one to the oldest oneYou should include previous job titlesLocationsDates of employment TasksNegative features of the Chronological ResumeIt is hard to use by people who have limited work experience such as recent college graduatesPeople who have employment gaps also suffer disadvantage if they choose to use that kind of format for their resumeFunctional/Skills Resume:This kind of resume acts quite the opposite way of the chronological one. Instead of stressing on the steady work history functional resumes focus on people’s skills and abilitiesPrimary features of this type of resumes are:One should focus on the skills that are required for the job that they are interested inThe functional resume can easily hid employment gaps, lack of education and credentials or limited work experienceAlthough this kind of resume gives the best chance to present your skills it is not very favored by employers as it takes them longer to screen out the right candidatesCombination Resume:Common features of this kind of resume are:Includes skills section as well as employment sectionSome creative professions such as graphic designers might include graphic elements In general that kind of resume allows more freedom Curriculum Vitae It is a kind of resume that is not as widely used as the Chronological or the Functional one.It is used in professions such as: AttorneysCollege professors-Physicians-Scientists-Etc.
Best results of the chronological resumes usually are achieved by professionals who have few years of experience and are looking to stay in the same field.Mailing address – please do not abbreviate name of streets as well as Street=St or Avenue = AveIf you are in the process of moving you should arrange a PO BOXPhone numbers – use a number that you can always be contacted at and do not forget area codesVoice mail – make it sound professional be clear in the pronunciation of your name and message with an upbeat voice. If applicable include alternate point of contact informationEducation – should be kept towards the top of the resume especially if the person is a recent college graduate with an exceptional GPA and credentialsIf you have plenty of experience the education can be situated lower on the resume page. Please use action words and phrases such as the ones shown in the red boxWork and volunteer history – list all jobs along with what you accomplished and the skills that helped you in your accomplishmentsJob titles – you can modify your title to be as close as to what your job required, you can also check with previous supervisors for objections if you wishPrevious Employers – list the name of the company/organization, city, state or province, street address is not requiredEmployment Dates – full years are preferred especially if you have employment gaps Employment Gaps should be represented in a positive way – if you have been out of the job market doing job that is out of the scope of your previous profession like farming and you used to be a GM of a Florist company you could always say that you have been self employed for that period of time on your resume. Remember the point is to get an interview, no need to lie just present information in a smoother way. It easier to communicate what you did while you were self employed if asked at the interview.
The job objective is not a compelling tool to use when writing your resume as it does not give any reasons to the employer to why should they hire you!The length of the summary matters a lot as it provides opportunity for the writer of the resume to state their value preposition in a concise way and attract the attention of the reader. The only thing that job objective does is providing career goals – it does not provide any information why should the potential employer higher that individual
Duties / Accomplishments – quantify what you did and say that you did it wellEmphasize skills transferable skills from your previous job Professional Organizations – involvement that shows you interest in that particular kind of jobEx – American management organization if you are a manager; any local organization that help you with networking and expert information needed for your jobRecognition and awards – mention them if they support your job objective – Sales person of the Year, 2009 when looking for a sales positionReferences not needed on the bottom of the resume- they need to be on a separate sheet of paper and provided if requested by the employerDo not forget to contact the people who you would like to be your references and ask them if they agree so that they will be alert if your future employer calls themInclude – your referees names, addresses, phones and why you have chosen those people to refer youDo not forget to edit!!!
Functional resume stresses more on your skills rather than lengths and terms of employment
Skills section could also be called:Areas of accomplishment Summary of qualificationsAreas of expertise and ability– which skills are the most sought after in the job field that you looking to gain employmentGIVE EXAMPLES OF SITUATIONS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS THAT YOU UTILIZED THE SKILLS NEEDED FOR THAT JOB
Summary/ Executive summary – a main component in the chronological resume as it allows the writer to focus their energy around a field of interest that they are seeking to gain employmentWhy should someone hire you?Adaptive skills – such as getting along, enthusiasm, etc.Transferable skills – general skills that can be used in variety of jobs – organize, meet deadlines, language proficiency, etc.Related to your job skills – Specific skills that you have that support your ability in doing this job – In functional resume – emphasize the skills that are the most important for successfully performing the job that you are looking into and give good examples of accomplishment that support those skillsSkills, accomplishments and results – extremely important support to the objective/summaryEducation and training – accomplishments while going to school if needed as a recent college graduatePortfolio – very welcomed if needed – portfolio might include writing samples, photographs, articles, etc.
Resume writing services – different charges as well as services, some places and professionals are not as good as others – ask for their credentialsDo it yourself – you have the most clear vision about what your experience is and there are less chances to have information misrepresented Do it yourself – if you decide to use resume writing services It is a must that you take part in the creative processCareer counseling – low cost services are offered through collegesEdit Your Resume – extremely importantAsk a friend or colleague to review your resume Use short paragraphs – easier to readNarrow columns – easier to read than wide columnsTop left – people scan materials from left to right and top to bottomAdequate white space – it is easy on the eyes to find the information needed quicker2 fonts the most Bold type and bullets – do not overuse them, needed when you would like to emphasize something, not needed all the timeSize of the font – 10 – 12 no less than 10 ( too small )Resume copies – be familiar with the event that you are attending – college campus recruiting, professional job fair, etc and number of participating vendors or company reps – get as many as the number of the companies you are interested in plus a few extra
Before interview – thank them for taking the time to meet with youAfter interview – create more positive impression, remind the employer about yourself
When applying on a company website or a job board please follow their instructionsWhen emailing resume the best way to go about it is to create a pdf. version of your resume and attach it as well as copy and paste the your resume in the body of the email. What are keywords? – these are words very specific to the industry or profession that one is in! Use the words that are provided in the job ad exactly the way they are mentioned what kind of words would your employer be looking forRead the job descriptions in the occupational handbook – there are a lot of keywords in those descriptionsBe very specific on your qualifications
Having a blog would suggest that you have passion about that particular subject no matter whether it is or it is not your profession at the momentReaders would be able to see a lot of keywords and that would instantaneously provoke impression in them about your familiarity of the problem that you are discussing in your blogShow off your proficiency
