The Diversity Advantage: Increase Board Effectiveness through Engaging Diverse Talent   Blurb: During this fun, interactive workshop you will have the opportunity to explore how and why increasing diversity on your board will lead to improved effectiveness and community engagement.  Explore the ideas of unconscious bias, intercultural communication skills and board recruitment and retention that will aid in making your board ready for the future. Also learn about the National DiverseCity on Board Initiative that can help boards of all sizes plan and train for the future.
  2. Icebreaker activity… Guiding questions: What percentage of the iceberg is visible? How would you describe these aspects? (visible, in our awareness, what we see when we travel etc.) How would you describe the next layer? (Governing ideas but not obvious on the surface) Will pick out a few to highlight. How would you describe the deepest layer? (Sometimes we don’t even see these in ourselves.) At your tables, take the next 5-10 min to talk about these different layers and how you learned them as a child, growing up, in school or in society. Pick 1 from each layer and share a story about how you learned that value/idea for your culture. Debrief: looking at your own culture more deeply will help you to better understand the cultures of others. Did anyone have an interesting story about how they learned about incentives to work or the ordering of time.. or patterns of handling emotions?
