The nearly exponential growth of the entrepreneurial community at University of Michigan (U-M) is largely attributed to the students themselves. In January 2008, U-M launched the Center for Entrepreneurship to support these students. Through these and other similar efforts, students of like mind on a campus of nearly 40,000, can network, share ideas and pursue their passions. By January 2009, seven students actively involved in their own ventures joined together to find ways to share resources and ideas to accelerate the launch of their ventures.This resulted in the launch of a student run business accelerator, TechArb (techarb.org), in the Summer of 2009. The seven founders secured real estate in downtown Ann Arbor and invited 30 entrepreneurial-minded students, representing seven companies in the music, technology, and biotech industries. This paper discusses the genesis and results of the first U-M student accelerator.

We don’t have the luxury any more of being able to plan well in advance and for everything to be crystalized before we proceed. We all know that we live in a time of flux and a measure of unpredictability. A time when STUDENT and EMPLOYEE EXPECATIONS OF US has never been GREATER. A time when for many of us, the notion of CHOICE plays a SIGNIFICANT ROLE in our SUCCESS. And most importantly, for this session, that STUDENT AND EMPLOYEE EMPOWERMENT AND ENGAGEMENT offers not only the path to gaining competitive advantage.
So, to better understand what optimal learning experiences look like, we started out by exploring a design process with students. To do that, we launched a Student Experience Design Studio back in January that brought together close to 30 students from across the province to look at the present and future of online and technology-enabled learning. (1 min thus far)
We threw students into a design process that resulted in a number of different student led ideas or themes that range from addressing online learning engagement to virtual reality in the classroom.
Those same students were brought back to work with key vendors to attempt to innovate solutions to some of the common themes and problems identified at the design studio. This resulted in a number of key real world projects that are still being led by students.
We wanted to continue empowering students to rethink their learning experience, so, we launched a Student Experience Design Lab, the SXD Lab. The SXD Lab brings students into the learning design process by creating an ongoing safe place for learners to prototype, test ideas and co-create the learning journey.
Students adhere to a design ideation process that encourages them to not jump to solutions but to ideate ways of solving a particular problem. It’s amazing how effective solving a problem is by not jumping to a solution, immediately. (2 mins thus far)
