South Sudan held a referendum to decide whether to split from North Sudan. The vote was along political, economic, and religious divisions between the predominantly Christian and animist South and the Muslim North. If South Sudan becomes independent it could end the conflict in Darfur and give the South representation, but it may also increase conflict between the sides and create logistical challenges in splitting oil exports and infrastructure.
