Sebi board approved the new Sebi (Foreign Portfolio Investors) Regulations, 2013
Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) announced a new Foreign Portfolio Investor (FPI)
regulations to put in place easier registration process and operating framework for such entities. Under
the new norms, all existing FIIs (Foreign Institutional Investors), Sub Accounts and Qualified Foreign
Investors (QFIs) will be eventually merged into this new investor class to be known as FPIs. SEBI also
approved setting up 'Designated Depository Participants (DDPs)', which would register FPIs on behalf of
the market regulator subject to compliance with KYC norms and which would be divided in three
categories as per their risk profile. Category I FPIs (Foreign governments and government related foreign
investors), Category II FPIs (Appropriately regulated, university funds, university related endowments,
pension funds etc) & Category III FPIs (all others not eligible under the first two categories).
PM's of India and Bangladesh jointly inaugurate Grid Interconnection between two countries
Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina jointly inaugurated
the India-Bangladesh Grid Inter-connection at Bheramara in Bangladesh. The transmission line in High
Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) in Bheramara would provide a safe and reliable interconnection of power
grids of the two countries to enable the supply of 500 megawatt of power from India to Bangladesh.
Both the Prime Ministers also jointly laid the foundation stone for 1320 megawatt Maitri Thermal Power
Project, being developed by Bangladesh-India friendship Power Company which is a joint venture of
India's NTPC and Bangladesh Power Development Board.
RBI constitutes committee to scrutinize applications for new banking licences
RBI has been constituted a committee to scrutinize the applications for new banking licences. The
committee would be headed by Former RBI Governor Bimal Jalan, while former Deputy Governor Usha
Thorat, SEBI’s first Chairman Chandu Bhave and RBI Board Member Nachiket Mor would be its
members. The committee would be able to submit its report by January 2014. RBI has so far received 26
applications for new banking licences.

The Union Cabinet approved the National Policy on Universal Electronic Accessibility that recognizes the
need to eliminate discrimination on the basis of disabilities as well as to facilitate equal access to
electronics and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). The National Policy on Universal
Electronic Accessibility has been created on the backdrop of India ratifying the United Nations
Convention on the Rights of the Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) in 2007.

According to an analysis by McKinsey Global Institute, as many as 158 global large companies have their
headquarters in India with a combined revenue of $898 billion. India was ranked 11th in the list followed
by South Africa, Switzerland, Taiwan and Brazil. The US topped the chart with 2,123 large firms having
their headquarters in the country with a combined revenue of $15,221 billion, followed by Japan (1,028
firms, $7,347 billion), China (577, $5,449 billion), Germany (462,$3,788 billion) and United Kingdom
(358, $2,818 billion), constituting the top five.
Pune Gets India’s First All-women sharia court
India’s first sharia court conducted solely by women with an aim to redress grievances of Muslim
women has started functioning in Pune, set up by Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA). The court
will be functioning to mete out justice to women in Muslim community in tune of with the tenets of the
Quran which confers equal rights to both men and women.
