Introduction
Topic – Taken from any section of the SYLLABUS
Such as: The Family , Groups, Institutions, Government etc.
HOW IS IT WRITTEN?
General statement that captures what the survey will based on.
Example
Views of Teachers on the topic ‘virtual
teaching’.
TASK 1 - STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
What are the type or
types of online
platforms used?
What are the positives
of virtual teaching?
What are the negatives
of virtual teaching ?
What can be done to make
the teaching learning
process a better one?
What are the views of the Stanford Secondary
School Teachers on the topic ‘virtual teaching ’?
TASK 1 – STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Must be
written in a
question form
Must have
two variables
Must identify
the who ?
Must identify
the where?
Must have
supportive
questions
Task 2 – Reason for the area of
Research/Rationale
CONTEXUALIZE
REASON FOR USE OF THE AREA
REASON FOR THE TOPIC
SAMPLE : RATIONALE / REASON FOR AREA OF
RESEARCH
The covid - 19 pandemic had disrupted face to face teaching in almost the entire
world. Stanford Secondary is no different. As of March 2020 teachers had to quickly
adopt to virtual teaching
The researcher is a teacher of the very school. she overheard on several occasions,
the many remarks made by her colleagues on the modes used to teach. Some of
these were good while others not so good.
These remarks are what created an interest in her to conduct a survey on the topic
‘ virtual teaching’. It is the intention of the researcher to find out the views the
teachers have with regards to virtual teaching.
TASK 3 - METHODOLOGY
STATE METHOD OF COLLECTION
• QUESTIONNAIRE
• INTERVIEW
• OBSERVATION
DEFINE THE METHOD
STATE TWO OR MORE
REASONS FOR THE USE OF
THE METHOD
SAMPLE TASK 3 - METHODOLOGY
In order to obtain information on the topic ’ virtual teaching’, the researcher used
printed questionnaires, which allowed participants to state their opinions with
privacy.
A questionnaire is a set of printed or written questions with a choice of
answers, devised for the purposes of a survey or statistical study.
(Merriam – Webster Dictionary)
Ramsawak and Umraw (2010) state that questionnaires: saves money and time;
gives people time to think before they write their answers; reduces interviewing
bias as respondents are not influenced by the researcher; and it allows the
researcher to gain information from a large number of people in a relatively short
period of time.
TASK 4 : INSTRUMENT USED TO
COLLECT DATA
COVER LETTER
QUESTIONNAIRE
• 15-20 QUESTIONS
• QUESTIONNAIRE MUST CONSIST OF CLOSED ENDED AND OPEN
ENDED QUESTIONS . LESS OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS (ESSAY
TYPE QUESTION)
• QUESTIONS MUST BE SEQUENCED LOGICALLY – BIO DATA ,
INTRODUCTION QUESTIONS, CAUSES EFFECT AND SOLUTIONS
• QUESTIONS MUST ANSWER THE STATEMENT OF
PROBLEM/RESEARCH QUESTIONS
Activity
What are some guidelines needed to follow when designing the
questionnaire?
TASK 5: PROCEDURES USED TO
COLLECT DATA
WHICH instrument was used?
Example: The instrument that was used is
printed questionnaire. The questionnaire
had 16 questions including the demographic
data. There were 12 close ended and four
open-ended questions
WHO received the instrument? Example:
Twenty instruments were distributed to 5
males and 15 females in the 19 – 45 age
group / to Teachers of the school
WHO collected the data?
Example: The researcher/
writer/investigator with the
assistance of a friend collected the
data.
TASK 5: PROCEDURES USED TO
COLLECT DATA
WHAT data collection method was used?
Example: Random sampling or deliberate
selection was done. Use of zoom, WhatsApp call,
email
WHEN was this exercise done? Example:
The data collection period was two
weeks/ from September 12 – 26, 2020.
WHERE was the data collected? Example: The data was
collected from Stanford Secondary , Goed Fortuin West
bank Demerara
TASK 5: PROCEDURES USED TO
COLLECT DATA
HOW was the data
collected?
Example: The researcher/
the researcher and a
relative distributed and
collected the instruments
by hand.
WHY was this procedure
necessary?
Example: It was necessary as
it ensures accurate data and
it was the only way the
researcher had to access
data which is both valid and
reliable.
TASK 6 – Presentation OF DATA
THREE TYPES OF
PRESENTATIONS
- BARGRAPHS
- HISTORGRAMS
- TABLES
- PICTOGRAPH
FIGURES MUST BE WELL
LABELLED

ACTIVITY
TASK 7- ANALYSIS AND
INTERPRETATION OF DATA
Give an overview of
the problem and area
of research, as well as
the target group in the
first 2 to 3 lines.
Make inferences or draw
conclusions based on
data collected.
TASK 7- ANALYSIS AND
INTERPRETATION OF DATA
Address/interpret
and analyze all
questions on the
instrument. Make

reference
Make references to
figures, tables,
quotations as well as
the rationale (reason/s
for conducting the
research).
TASK 7- ANALYSIS AND
INTERPRETATION OF DATA
When analyzing and
interpreting the data,
use terms such as
‘majority’, ‘minority’,
‘trends’, ‘unanimous’,
‘none’/ ‘no one’ and
‘others’.
Use related
literature such as
books, newspaper
clippings and
articles to support
the data.
TASK 8- STATEMENT OF FINDINGS
•The “Statement of Findings” should represent three
findings gathered from the data collected from the
research questions. Ensure that the Problem Statement
(s) is/are in the findings
Task 9 - RECOMMENDATION AND
IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY
• Identify the solutions: Two solutions based on findings are required. First, identify
the recommended solution to two of the three findings.
• Then, Justify why your solution will work: The next part of the question requires
the researcher to write the strategy that will be employed to realize ONE of the
recommendations made.
• Include who will provide assistance and where it will be done and justify why the
solution will work. Remember this must be practical and realis
