On September 11, 2001, America as we know it changed forever. We were attacked on our own soil
for the first time since the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. Our country thought we were safe from
terrorist attacks due to the oceans that separated us. We discovered on that horror filled day that we
were extremely incorrect. Our own resources were used against us in those atrocious acts of terrorism.

Airlines Flight 175 to fly into the South Tower. American Airlines Flight 77 was also seized by five

Even before a child is born, we have already labeled that child as either a boy or a girl. Then as they
grow up we subject them to gender socialization, which is the process in which cultures communicate
their expectations about gender to the child (Arnett, 135). I grew up in a small town; however, it was
not like the stereotypical, very conservative, small town that is often portrayed in movies. My
experience in Western culture, which is immensely different than that of other cultures, is that gender
socialization was prevalent during childhood, but became more relaxed during adolescents and
emerging adulthood. From as far back as I can remember, differential gender socialization took place
during childhood. Parents taught their children that objects such as dolls and dresses were for girls,
while objects like trucks and guns were meant for boys. I remember one time that my female cousin

to find a solution. People are always biased to the knowledge they have, whether it is true or false, a
lot or a little. When innocent people look to solve a problem, they are biased to their innocence, which
often causes more harm than good. In The Quiet American, by Graham Greene, Alden Pyle is an
innocent, and therefore problematic, character. The novel is set in 1950s Vietnam during the Vietnam
War. Pyle is representative of the American forces in the war as his primary goal is to stop
communism, and he surmises that he knows the best way to do it. Because of this, he is an example of
American exceptionalism, believing that he is most apt to solve the crisis in Vietnam, when in reality
he does not have enough knowledge of the situation at hand, causing more damage than repair. Pyle
