Brendan Eich was appointed CEO of Mozilla in early 2014 but faced backlash over his 2008 political donation supporting California's Proposition 8 banning same-sex marriage. As criticism grew from Mozilla employees and online petitions, Eich resigned just two weeks later. Mozilla struggled to contain the crisis and redirect attention to its upcoming Firefox 29 release. While new interim CEO Chris Beard was appointed and the browser launched as planned, the controversy distracted from Mozilla's messaging during this period. The organization aims to avoid similar leadership crises going forward through improved background checks, monitoring internal dissent, and having a crisis response plan.
Facebook is an American online social media and social networking service founded in 2004. It was created by Mark Zuckerberg and his college roommates. Facebook currently has over 1.79 billion monthly active users and is a for-profit company owned 53% by Mark Zuckerberg. While Facebook allows users to connect, share photos and information, and find events, it also faces criticisms around privacy issues and fake profiles. Overall, Facebook can be a powerful tool if used properly for networking and marketing, but users must be aware of potential downsides around oversharing and privacy.

The rise of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets has led to the growth of mobile commerce (m-commerce). Usage of smartphones in Canada grew from 34% in 2012 to 47% in 2013. Over half of online sales are now made through mobile devices. As a result, companies must adapt their advertising and strategies to engage mobile users. However, m-commerce also raises privacy and security issues as personal data is increasingly collected through mobile apps and devices. For m-commerce to succeed, companies must implement strong privacy protections to build consumer trust.
This document discusses the concept of viral media and strategies used by successful organizations. It begins by looking at the emergence of "virality" in tech companies. The document cautions that while social media strategies can work well, they also carry risks if not implemented properly.
On Digital Transformation - 10 ObservationsMike Arauz
The ideas about technology that have become lenses and points of view I return to as I try to makes sense of how things are changing, and what can be done. This is a digital world, so none of this is etched in stone. But from what I’ve seen so far, these things seem to be true.

Leading in the 21st Century (Group Presentation) - Mark ZuckerbergYee Len Wan
Mark Zuckerberg is an American computer programmer and internet entrepreneur who co-founded Facebook in 2004. He was born in 1984 and showed an early interest in computers, creating programs as a child. He studied computer science at Harvard and launched Facebook from his dorm room initially as a way for Harvard students to connect. Facebook quickly expanded and is now a global social network with billions of users. Zuckerberg continues to lead Facebook as its chairman and CEO, with a vision of connecting more people worldwide and driving social change through technology.
The dot-com bubble occurred from 1997-2000 as many new internet companies went public and stock prices rose rapidly based on speculation about future profits rather than current earnings. The bubble burst in 2000 as stock prices declined sharply, many internet companies failed or went bankrupt, and the US economy entered a recession. While new technologies stimulated growth and consumption during the boom, the collapse had widespread economic impacts and opened the recession of the early 2000s.

1) Social media has dramatically changed how people interact online through many-to-many conversations rather than one-to-one broadcasts, with people now producing as well as consuming content.
2) If most people used social media more than email and commercial brokers were already seeing success with social media, it could create a major marketing shift by becoming the most successful way for businesses to promote themselves.
3) While social media is still in its early stages and perfect approaches have yet to be determined, it has proven valuable for some companies in generating revenue, recruiting talent, and transforming marketing when used strategically within a comprehensive marketing mix.

Unlocking the True Value of Social Media Holly Ross
Everywhere you turn there are tons of great stories about organizations doing wonderful things online to build communities and engage their supporters through Social Media. But what is it all for? We’ve all heard the sayings “If you build it, it will come”, “the value of Social CRM”, other concepts around understanding what is the value of Social Media. In this session, we’ll explore the notion that the real value of Social Media is not only in the experience of the community itself, but also in having a greater understanding of how your supporters are engaging with your online communities. This information can be invaluable to both marketers and fundraisers as they attempt to communicate to these engaged members of their community.

Learn what about the buzz called social media and why meeting professionals are shifting from traditional marketing to new marketing strategies. Understand the three key elements of Learn, Listen and Launch for every successful social media campaign.
* Defining the social media tool suite
* Building relationships through viral marketing
* Traditional marketing versus new media marketing
* Using social media to recruit attendees and sponsors
Social media listening has evolved significantly over time from the early days of bulletin board systems and Usenet in the 1980s. In the 2000s, blogs and social networks grew in popularity, creating more content for companies to listen to. From 2007 onward, major social networks advertised extensively and the social media listening industry matured to provide services like influencer identification, reputation monitoring, and campaign impact analysis. Today, most major brands regularly use social media listening for purposes like brand monitoring, consumer research, and social customer relationship management.
Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign effectively utilized social media to engage voters in unprecedented ways. Obama's team posted more varied content across more online platforms than John McCain's campaign. This included over 1,800 videos on YouTube compared to McCain's 330. Obama also followed all Twitter users who followed him. His social media presence helped raise over $300 million of the $650 million total for his campaign. Lessons from Obama's success include engaging voters where they are online, being transparent and authentic, and using familiar tools to lower barriers to participation.

BACKGROUND
In 1998, Brendan Eich and Mitchell Baker co-founded the Mozilla Project. Brendan and Mitchell went on to
found the non-profit Mozilla Foundation in 2003. The Los Angeles Times reported on Eich’s 2008 political
contribution to California Proposition 8. From 1998-2014, Eich served as CTO and SVP Engineering of Mozilla,
among other roles.
Mozilla has offices in the United States, Canada, China, Germany, New Zealand, England, and France.
EICH INITIAL DONATION RESPONSE IN 2012
Mitchell Baker addressed the issue with employees in Google Groups. Brendan Eich responded on his personal
blog. The former met with discussions about the larger Mozilla mission and Baker engaged with respondents at
times. Eich’s response almost a month later was emotional and set the stage for the 2014 uprising.
Statement on Mozilla Governance (March 8, 2012)
Excerpt:
If we start to try to make "Mozilla" mean "those people who share not only the
Mozilla mission but also my general political / social / religious / environmental
view" we will fail. If we focus Mozilla on our shared consensus regarding
the Mozilla mission and manifesto then the opportunities before us
are enormous.
Mozilla's diversity is a success condition. Our mission and our goal is truly
global. Our mission taps into a shared desire for respect and control and user
sovereignty that runs across cultures and across many other worldviews. We
may even offend each other in some of our other views. Despite this, we share a
commitment to the Mozilla mission. This is a remarkable achievement and
important to our continued success.

SEARCH ENGINE DATA
Google Trends noted an increase in search from March-May 2014, but Brendan Eich barely registers (blue line,
next page). Most of the news headlines surround Firefox (red line) and not Mozilla (yellow line). Even so,

Firefox coverage remained steady throughout the controversy until the new product release on April 30th, at
which point it spiked. For comparison, a green line denotes NCAA March Madness coverage, which occurred
during the same time period.
Search for Brendan Eich was based entirely in the United States, but for Firefox attention remains outside the
United States.
Interesting. Firefox in Spanish search jumps eight-fold.

Across the major platforms, Google search shows remnants of the struggle eight days after the launch of the
new browser, with CEO as a top term.
On Bing, CEO only appears when searching the company name (at the bottom of the list), but not with the
Firefox product.

And two weeks later, the new browser launches.
DEBRIEF
Prop 8 was a divisive issue in 2008 that marginally passed in California. Campaign contributions are publicly
reported, but it would be interesting to dig further into who reported Eich’s donation at the Los Angeles Times
and even more, who tipped off the paper about it. Perhaps they are one in the same, but maybe not.
Mozilla appeared to have expected some push back on Brendan Eich’s appointment, immediately releasing
statements on the company’s position on LGBT rights and diversity shortly after the announcement. However, it
seems that they did not expect the avalanche of criticism.
Mozilla stayed the course and continued to direct individuals back to company messaging by leadership.
Ultimately, the internal strife distracted from the release of Firefox 29.0 and only intensified when the
mainstream media and tech blogs caught wind. Employees and consumers often focus on dissenting opinions and
attack leaders who express those opinions, even privately. When in crisis, companies tend to experience
personnel turnover in high-stakes high-profile positions, including and especially company leadership.
Public perception of the company plays a huge part in the success of new products. With that reality, a
cofounder exited Mozilla either at his own behest or that of current leadership. What cannot be estimated,
however, is that the browser market is crowded with multiple versions of Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox,
among others. No doubt the company is aware of this reality when it makes staffing decisions, or they will in the
future after a misstep.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
How to avoid this situation again:
n Thorough leadership background checks, as the public takes great interest in
reading about leaked company or personal information
n Watch and respond early to internal detractors, particularly when these individuals
take their complaints public
n Keep calm and follow the crisis plan, if there is one. If not, create a wireframe at
the very least
