Many theories try to explain why some people become serial or mass murderers. However, these theories vary tremendously in terms of the proposed factors that lead to the development of serial and mass murderers. Some theories, for example, emphasize the role of social factors, such as the family. Other theories highlight the importance of psychological factors, such as personality traits, and still other theories focus on the role of biological factors, such as neurological functioning. In isolation, none of these theories provides a definitive explanation for why some people develop into serial or mass murderers. Integrating knowledge from each theory provides for a well-rounded explanation of serial and mass murderers.
Theoretical perspectives not only provide some insight into the causes for the development of serial and mass murderers but also assist criminal profilers in creating a psychological profile of a serial or mass murderer. For instance, suppose a criminal profiler realizes that a serial murderer's crime scene reveals evidence consistent with the attachment theory. Based on this theory, the criminal profiler would likely point out that the serial murderer had a dysfunctional childhood that was marked with emotional abuse, physical abuse, or both by the parents. Theories of serial and mass murderers therefore allow criminal profilers to predict the characteristics not revealed at the crime scene.

This paper will be on two criminology theories; the positivist and the classical theory. These two theories will be discussed and how the criminal justice system responded towards the assumptions. It explains how certain crimes are looked at and also dealt with.
The commitment of various criminal activities attracts action from the criminal justice system. However, on many different occasions, the criminal justice system has been criticized for handling those who commit crime with great leniency and mercy. The only way that crime can be reduced and those who intend to commit crimes in future stopped is through institution of various reforms in the criminal justice system. Through two of the criminal theories, the criminal justice system can be reformed and help and guide on making adjustments in the theory (Siegel, 2012). The two theories are the positivist theory of criminology and the classical theory of criminology. The two could help enhance the responses of the criminal justice system in the following ways.
This theory of criminology holds on to the fact and aspect that the intelligence of an individual is a central factor and issue in committing various criminal activities. A low level of intelligence in individuals is believed to be at the center of engagement in various crimes. On the basis of this theory, the criminal justice system t can benefit in the following ways in enhancing to cases where individuals engage in criminal activities such as child abuse due to low levels of intelligence.
The criminal justice system should ensure that individuals who commit crimes that they are very well aware of and capable of preventing themselves from engaging in have a mental check up before they convict them and institute heavy penalties. There should be no mercy to an individual who commits a crime and the best way to penalize such individuals by the criminal justice.

Research has begun to elucidate that persons with mental illness become involved in the criminal justice
system as a result of criminality and not merely because of their mental illness. This study aims to clarify
the similarities and differences in criminal thinking and psychiatric symptomatology between persons
with mental illness who are and are not criminal justice involved. Male and female (n � 94) participants
admitted to an acute psychiatric facility completed measures to assess criminal thinking (i.e., Psycho-
logical Inventory of Criminal Thinking Styles and Criminal Sentiments Scale–Modified) and psychiatric
symptomatology (Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory–Third Edition). In addition to the inpatient
sample, 94 incarcerated persons with mental illness from a previously conducted study were selected
based on their match with the current sample on several key demographic and psychiatric variables. The
results of this study indicated that hospitalized persons with mental illness with a history of criminal
justice involvement evidenced similar thinking styles to persons with mental illness who were incarcer-

As a victimologist, it is important that you understand that the serial killers don't necessarily fit nicely into a little box with a theory label attached. Therefore, you know how and why a particular theory is used in these cases. This will help you predict and possibly prevent future victimization.
Victimology is important in the overall investigative process because it not only provides information about the victims (their health, personal history, social habits, and personalities) but also explains why they became victims.
To understand victimology, it is important to understand the method of approach, the method of attack, and the risk assessment by the offender. If we know the victim's personality, then we may be able to determine, in conjunction with an analysis of the crime scene, how the offender initially approached the victim. The same will apply to the way the victim was attacked and overpowered.
If this information cannot be obtained by studying the crime scene, then an analysis of the victim's overall risk, that is, the chances of his or her becoming a victim, may help. If we examine this along with the risks the offender was willing to take to acquire a certain victim, then we will get an overall picture of who the victim was and what drove the offender to choose a particular person as a victim.
Learning about the victims of serial killers is not less important than learning about carjacking, robbery, or theft victims. Learning about serial killers' victims is as important as studying the victims of carjacking, robberies, or thefts. In the criminal justice system, the community and the government place a higher priority on homicides—including serial killings—than on other crimes. Police officers, detectives, and victim services workers are expected to prioritize cases involving homicides and serial killings even if they happen rarely.

Mary Evelyn Greene, who has memory impairment, lives in a private room at Shady Brook Skilled Nursing Facility located in a beautiful suburb of a major metropolitan city. She has resided at Shady Brook for the past 18 months. Before moving into Shady Brook, Mrs. Greene lived independently in her own home with assistance from a private-duty nursing assistant and a housekeeper. She and her husband had resided together in this home for more than 50 years. Mrs. Greene is 89 years old and suffers from several health problems associated with aging.
Mrs. Greene has one son, David Greene. David has the power of attorney to handle his mother’s health care and other personal affairs. David works as a trial attorney in one of the city’s largest and most prestigious law firms. He owns a large home in an upscale neighborhood and works hard to put two of his children through college and another one through medical school. His home is about an hour’s drive from his workplace and about 20 minutes from Shady Brook. David’s wife Barbara has never been close to her mother-in-law and has not shown much interest in her care. Hence, caring for his mother has become a major responsibility for David, and he is having a difficult time dealing with her declining health and the onset of mild dementia. It is becoming increasingly more difficult for David to leave his law practice or the court room to deal with issues related to his mother.
Mrs. Greene’s husband was a very successful land developer who left her with a substantial estate, which meets all of her financial needs. After her husband passed away, Mrs. Greene decided to remain in her home. She was able to maintain her independence until she was 87 years old, when she began to show signs of dementia. Shortly thereafter, David moved her to Shady Brook. David also hired a part-time “sitter” to keep her mother company because she was too weak to go out of her ro.

The commitment of various criminal activities attracts action from the criminal justice system. However, on many different occasions, the criminal justice system has been criticized for handling those who commit crime with great leniency and mercy. The only way that crime can be reduced and those who intend to commit crimes in future stopped is through institution of various reforms in the criminal justice system. Through two of the criminal theories, the criminal justice system can be reformed and help and guide on making adjustments in the theory (Siegel, 2012). The two theories are the positivist theory of criminology and the classical theory of criminology. The two could help enhance the responses of the criminal justice system in the following ways.
This theory of criminology holds on to the fact and aspect that the intelligence of an individual is a central factor and issue in committing various criminal activities. A low level of intelligence in individuals is believed to be at the center of engagement in various crimes. On the basis of this theory, the criminal justice system t can benefit in the following ways in enhancing to cases where individuals engage in criminal activities such as child abuse due to low levels of intelligence.
The criminal justice system should ensure that individuals who commit crimes that they are very well aware of and capable of preventing themselves from engaging in have a mental check up before they convict them and institute heavy penalties. Research has begun to elucidate that persons with mental illness become involved in the criminal justice
system as a result of criminality and not merely because of their mental illness. This study aims to clarify
the similarities and differences in criminal thinking and psychiatric symptomatology between persons
with mental illness who are and are not criminal justice involved. Male and female (n � 94) participants
admitted to an acute psychiatric facility completed measures to assess criminal thinking (i.e., Psycho-
logical Inventory of Criminal Thinking Styles and Criminal Sentiments Scale–Modified) and psychiatric
symptomatology (Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory–Third Edition). In addition to the inpatient
sample, 94 incarcerated persons with mental illness from a previously conducted study were selected
based on their match with the current sample on several key demographic and psychiatric variables. The
results of this study indicated that hospitalized persons with mental illness with a history of criminal
justice involvement evidenced similar thinking styles to persons with mental illness who were incarcer-

As a victimologist, it is important that you understand that the serial killers don't necessarily fit nicely into a little box with a theory label attached. Therefore, you know how and why a particular theory is used in these cases. This will help you predict and possibly prevent future victimization.
Victimology is important in the overall investigative process because it not only provides information about the victims (their health, personal history, social habits, and personalities) but also explains why they became victims.
To understand victimology, it is important to understand the method of approach, the method of attack, and the risk assessment by the offender. If we know the victim's personality, then we may be able to determine, in conjunction with an analysis of the crime scene, how the offender initially approached the victim. The same will apply to the way the victim was attacked and overpowered.
If this information cannot be obtained by studying the crime scene, then an analysis of the victim's overall risk, that is, the chances of his or her becoming a victim, may help. If we examine this along with the risks the offender was willing to take to acquire a certain victim, then we will get an overall picture of who the victim was and what drove the offender to choose a particular person as a victim.
Learning about the victims of serial killers is not less important than learning about carjacking, robbery, or theft victims. Learning about serial killers' victims is as important as studying the victims of carjacking, robberies, or thefts. In the criminal justice system, the community and the government place a higher priority on homicides—including serial killings—than on other crimes. Police officers, detectives, and victim services workers are expected to prioritize cases involving homicides and serial killings even if they happen rarely.

A particular set of personality characteristics does not turn a person into a criminal. However, criminals may have the same set of characteristics. This concept may not be easy to understand. Here is another example: all college graduates have attended college, but not everyone who attended college is a college graduate. The mistake that "if A then B" is the same as "if B then A" is a common one in research, criminal investigation, and profiling.
Criminal profiling is a difficult task. Complete the following three parts and present them in your report.
Part I
Identify at least five offense characteristics of each of the following crimes: sex offense, murder, acquisitive crime, organized crime, and terrorism.
Part II
Choose two offenses for those listed in
Part I
. Using the selected characteristics, complete the following for each of the two offenses you selected:
Analyze the selected characteristics to develop a forensic profile for that particular type of offense. For example, how would you use the two offense characteristics you have selected for murder to develop inferences regarding the personality of a murderer?
Explain how an offender's level of cognitive and emotional functioning, as well as social and environmental factors, could contribute to his or her maladaptive behavior in each of the above offenses.
Identify and justify the types of tests and/or personality measures that might be used to gather additional information for each of the two offenses.
Identify and justify the type of collateral information you would need to learn about the offender in the case of each of the two crimes.
Part III
Identify the differences between ethical standards in a criminal investigation and ethical standards in a psychological interview.

Mary Evelyn Greene, who has memory impairment, lives in a private room at Shady Brook Skilled Nursing Facility located in a beautiful suburb of a major metropolitan city. She has resided at Shady Brook for the past 18 months. Before moving into Shady Brook, Mrs. Greene lived independently in her own home with assistance from a private-duty nursing assistant and a housekeeper. She and her husband had resided together in this home for more than 50 years. Mrs. Greene is 89 years old and suffers from several health problems associated with aging.
Mrs. Greene has one son, David Greene. David has the power of attorney to handle his mother’s health care and other personal affairs. David works as a trial attorney in one of the city’s largest and most prestigious law firms. He owns a large home in an upscale neighborhood and works hard to put two of his children through college and another one through medical school. His home is about an hour’s drive from his workplace and about 20 minutes from Shady Brook. David’s wife Barbara has never been close to her mother-in-law and has not shown much interest in her care. Hence, caring for his mother has become a major responsibility for David, and he is having a difficult time dealing with her declining health and the onset of mild dementia. It is becoming increasingly more difficult for David to leave his law practice or the court room to deal with issues related to his mother.
Mrs. Greene’s husband was a very successful land developer who left her with a substantial estate, which meets all of her financial needs. After her husband passed away, Mrs. Greene decided to remain in her home. She was able to maintain her independence until she was 87 years old, when she began to show signs of dementia. After completing reading Chapters 2, 8, and 9 of the Bartol & Bartol text, you will summarize a well– known criminal case including a description of the offense(s), the investigation of the crime, and the outcome. It is important in any investigation or analysis of criminal behavior to evaluate both endogenous and exogenous theories of criminal behavior and analyze how our biases and assumptions influence our assessment of individuals and the role of psychological profiling in law enforcement. It is also important to determine culturally–based behavior patterns that may be specific to certain segments of the population. Preliminary sources of this type of information may come from reliable media sources in their coverage of scholarly works as well as government publications of research findings. These may direct you to more focused resources for scholarly references. In your paper Identify and analyze the behavior of the offender(s) relative to the psychological history and evaluation of the offender(s). Describe the psychological, behavioral, environmental, and cognitive factors that you believe led to the offender’s criminality. The goal is to provide an analysis of the psychological history of the offender as it pertains to the offense(s). Summarize the psychological history of the offender as it pertains to the offense(s). Be sure to include as much information as possible regarding the offender’s childhood, adolescence as well as adulthood (if applicable). Provide examples of behavior that reflect psychological influences.
- 2. Discuss the nature of any mental health referrals or treatment that occurred and the outcome. Identify psychological issues that were present, as demonstrated through statements and/or behavior of the offender, but not identified or treated.
