Many theories try to explain why some people become serial or mass murderers. However, these theories vary tremendously in terms of the proposed factors that lead to the development of serial and mass murderers. Some theories, for example, emphasize the role of social factors, such as the family. Other theories highlight the importance of psychological factors, such as personality traits, and still other theories focus on the role of biological factors, such as neurological functioning. In isolation, none of these theories provides a definitive explanation for why some people develop into serial or mass murderers. Integrating knowledge from each theory provides for a well-rounded explanation of serial and mass murderers.
Theoretical perspectives not only provide some insight into the causes for the development of serial and mass murderers but also assist criminal profilers in creating a psychological profile of a serial or mass murderer. For instance, suppose a criminal profiler realizes that a serial murderer's crime scene reveals evidence consistent with the attachment theory. Based on this theory, the criminal profiler would likely point out that the serial murderer had a dysfunctional childhood that was marked with emotional abuse, physical abuse, or both by the parents. Theories of serial and mass murderers therefore allow criminal profilers to predict the characteristics not revealed at the crime scene.
To prepare for this assignment:
Review Chapter 4 of your course text, Profiling Violent Crimes: An Investigative Tool. Reflect on the theories of serial and mass murderers and consider how they are similar. In addition, consider how the theories are different from each other, such as whether they focus on factors identifiable at birth, related to personality development, or found in the environment.
Review the book excerpt, "The Making of a Serial Killer." Consider the various factors identified as potential causes of serial and mass murderers.
Review the article "Serial Murder and the Case of Aileen Wuornos: Attachment Theory, Psychopathy, and Predatory Aggression." Focus on how attachment theory is different from the other theories, such as psychoanalytic theory and constitutional theories, discussed in Chapter 4 of Profiling Violent Crimes: An Investigative Tool. In addition, consider how theories such as attachment theory may be better suited than other theories to explain female serial murderers.

Research has begun to elucidate that persons with mental illness become involved in the criminal justice
system as a result of criminality and not merely because of their mental illness. This study aims to clarify
the similarities and differences in criminal thinking and psychiatric symptomatology between persons
with mental illness who are and are not criminal justice involved. Male and female (n � 94) participants
admitted to an acute psychiatric facility completed measures to assess criminal thinking (i.e., Psycho-
logical Inventory of Criminal Thinking Styles and Criminal Sentiments Scale–Modified) and psychiatric
symptomatology (Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory–Third Edition). In addition to the inpatient
sample, 94 incarcerated persons with mental illness from a previously conducted study were selected
based on their match with the current sample on several key demographic and psychiatric variables. The
results of this study indicated that hospitalized persons with mental illness with a history of criminal
justice involvement evidenced similar thinking styles to persons with mental illness who were incarcer-

1. Psychology is the focus area of my degree; more specifically I chose forensic psychology. To me it was one of the most interesting studies during the path to my degree completion, mainly because of the level of critical and creative thinking involved. Learning how investigators put together information about criminals and their cases was intriguing. Critical thinking is of the utmost importance, when it comes to profiling, tacking, and capturing criminals. So many elements go into this process, take a serial killer for example. Investigators must find clues such as finger prints, DNA, articles of clothing, or a signature item that is left behind. A signature being something left at the scene that shows it was that person's work.
Forensic psychologists play a crucial role in the courtroom as well. Good forensic psychologists must have the ability to do the research necessary to answer questions posed by the case, which in turn requires an ability to evaluate the scientific and professional literature with a critical eye. In the court case, if a forensic psychologist fails to think critically they risk being refuted by the other side's forensic expert (Feldman-Summers, 2012). These individuals must be extremely methodical, calculating, and patient to achieve the desired results.

The defendant has been keeping a journal all along until the day before the murder and it is believed that he kept the journal because he knew he would kill Opee at some time. When the time came for trial, he can use an insanity plea, and since there is not enough evidence against him then he might win the case (Caplan, 2009). The only thing he did was hit an officer in the face and called him an alien and claimed he was God.
Under the state of California, there is no clear distinction between temporary and permanent insanity and the prime issue in the state of California is the condition or status of the defendant at the time of the crime. The process of determining insanity in the state of California is the Pronged M'Naghten rule. Under this rule, two conditions must be met to prove sanity of the defendant.
These conditions are:
1. The requirement that the defendant understands the nature and quality of his or her act.
2. The need for the defendant to different between what is right and wrong.
Any defendant who claims to have committed any crime and cannot meet the two-pronged above is declared to be statutorily insane.
There were some changes in the state of the California concerning the testing of the insanity defense. The amendment passed in the year 1994, which is called Model Penal Code prohibits the California court from determining insanity by personality, adjustment disorder, addition, seizure disorder or abuse of drugs and substances. The amendment states that the person under the influence of any of the above-listed condition is not morally upright and thus it will cause confusion in differentiating between insanity or influence from any of the above conditions (Rogers, 2010). Any defendant who is found insane at the time of crime may be declared not guilty because of insanity and in other cases the defendant might be found guilty. The judgment will be less severe because of the mental impairment which influenced his or her actions at the time of the crime.
Various steps ought to be taken so as to prove insanity of the defendant in the criminal law.

Research has begun to elucidate that persons with mental illness become involved in the criminal justice
system as a result of criminality and not merely because of their mental illness. This study aims to clarify
the similarities and differences in criminal thinking and psychiatric symptomatology between persons
with mental illness who are and are not criminal justice involved. Male and female (n � 94) participants
admitted to an acute psychiatric facility completed measures to assess criminal thinking (i.e., Psycho-
logical Inventory of Criminal Thinking Styles and Criminal Sentiments Scale–Modified) and psychiatric
symptomatology (Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory–Third Edition). In addition to the inpatient
sample, 94 incarcerated persons with mental illness from a previously conducted study were selected
based on their match with the current sample on several key demographic and psychiatric variables. The

1. Psychology is the focus area of my degree; more specifically I chose forensic psychology. To me it was one of the most interesting studies during the path to my degree completion, mainly because of the level of critical and creative thinking involved. Learning how investigators put together information about criminals and their cases was intriguing. Critical thinking is of the utmost importance, when it comes to profiling, tacking, and capturing criminals. So many elements go into this process, take a serial killer for example. Investigators must find clues such as finger prints, DNA, articles of clothing, or a signature item that is left behind. A signature being something left at the scene that shows it was that person's work.
Forensic psychologists play a crucial role in the courtroom as well. Good forensic psychologists must have the ability to do the research necessary to answer questions posed by the case, which in turn requires an ability to evaluate the scientific and professional literature with a critical eye. In the court case, if a forensic psychologist fails to think critically they risk being refuted by the other side's forensic expert (Feldman-Summers, 2012). These individuals must be extremely methodical, calculating, and patient to achieve the desired results.

Learning Team C does not believe that voluntary use of drugs has an effect on the condition of the mind of Stu Dents and there is not enough evidence to prove whether the defendant had used any drugs on the night in which the murder took place.
The defendant has been keeping a journal all along until the day before the murder and it is believed that he kept the journal because he knew he would kill Opee at some time. When the time came for trial, he can use an insanity plea, and since there is not enough evidence against him then he might win the case (Caplan, 2009). The only thing he did was hit an officer in the face and called him an alien and claimed he was God.
Under the state of California, there is no clear distinction between temporary and permanent insanity and the prime issue in the state of California is the condition or status of the defendant at the time of the crime. The process of determining insanity in the state of California is the Pronged M'Naghten rule. Under this rule, two conditions must be met to prove sanity of the defendant.
These conditions are:
1. The requirement that the defendant understands the nature and quality of his or her act.
2. The need for the defendant to different between what is right and wrong.
Any defendant who claims to have committed any crime and cannot meet the two-pronged above is declared to be statutorily insane.
There were some changes in the state of the California concerning the testing of the insanity defense. The amendment passed in the year 1994, which is called Model Penal Code prohibits the California court from determining insanity by personality, adjustment disorder, addition, seizure disorder or abuse of drugs and substances. The amendment states that the person under the influence of any of the above-listed condition is not morally upright and thus it will cause confusion in differentiating between insanity or influence from any of the above conditions (Rogers, 2010). Any defendant who is found insane at the time of crime may be declared not guilty because of insanity and in other cases the defendant might be found guilty. The judgment will be less severe because of the mental impairment which influenced his or her actions at the time of the crime.
Various steps ought to be taken so as to prove insanity of the defendant in the criminal law.

Personality Characteristics and Criminal Behavior
A particular set of personality characteristics does not turn a person into a criminal. However, criminals may have the same set of characteristics. This concept may not be easy to understand. Here is another example: all college graduates have attended college, but not everyone who attended college is a college graduate. The mistake that "if A then B" is the same as "if B then A" is a common one in research, criminal investigation, and profiling.
Criminal profiling is a difficult task. Complete the following three parts and present them in your report.
Part I
Identify at least five offense characteristics of each of the following crimes: sex offense, murder, acquisitive crime, organized crime, and terrorism.
Part II
Choose two offenses for those listed in
Part I
. Using the selected characteristics, complete the following for each of the two offenses you selected:
Analyze the selected characteristics to develop a forensic profile for that particular type of offense. For example, how would you use the two offense characteristics you have selected for murder to develop inferences regarding the personality of a murderer?
Explain how an offender's level of cognitive and emotional functioning, as well as social and environmental factors, could contribute to his or her maladaptive behavior in each of the above offenses.
Identify and justify the types of tests and/or personality measures that might be used to gather additional information for each of the two offenses.
Identify and justify the type of collateral information you would need to learn about the offender in the case of each of the two crimes.
Part III
Identify the differences between ethical standards in a criminal investigation and ethical standards in a psychological interview.
Offer your recommendations for future research needed to advance the science and research of psychological profiling techniques.
Discuss the different ethical considerations one must follow as an investigator and as a psychologist.
Support your responses giving reasons and examples from eight to ten scholarly resources.
Write a 7- to 9-page report in a Microsoft Word document. Apply APA standards to cite sources.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. - 1. Criminological Theory: Jeffrey Dahmer Criminological theory has undergone many changes over the years. From the relatively simplistic theories pertaining to physical appearance to the modern day psychopathy and biosocial conceptualizations, criminological theory has matured considerably over time. After completing reading Chapters 2, 8, and 9 of the Bartol & Bartol text, you will summarize a well– known criminal case (Jeffrey Dahmer) including a description of the offense(s), the investigation of the crime, and the outcome. It is important in any investigation or analysis of criminal behavior to evaluate both endogenous and exogenous theories of criminal behavior and analyze how our biases and assumptions influence our assessment of individuals and the role of psychological profiling in law enforcement. It is also important to determine culturally–based behavior patterns that may be specific to certain segments of the population. Preliminary sources of this type of information may come from reliable media sources in their coverage of scholarly works as well as government publications of research findings. These may direct you to more focused resources for scholarly references. In your paper Identify and analyze the behavior of (Jeffrey Dahmer) relative to the psychological history and evaluation of the offender(s). Describe the psychological, behavioral, environmental, and cognitive factors that you believe led to (Jeffrey Dahmer) criminality. The goal is to provide an analysis of the psychological history of the offender as it pertains to the offense(s). Summarize the psychological history of
- 2. (Jeffrey Dahmer) as it pertains to the offense(s). Be sure to include as much information as possible regarding the offender’s childhood, adolescence as well as adulthood (if applicable). Provide examples of behavior that reflect psychological influences. Discuss the nature of any mental health referrals or treatment that occurred and the outcome. Identify psychological issues that were present, as demonstrated through statements and/or behavior of (Jeffrey Dahmer) , but not identified or treated. The Case Summary and Offender Profile Must be three to four double-spaced pages in length (not including title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style Must include a separate title page Must use at least four scholarly sources in addition to the course texts.
