Why should you know about materials?
• A variety of materials are used to create cremation urns with an
assortment of beautiful designs.
• Knowledge of the materials can prevent unwanted surprises, such as
purchasing a pendant you are allergic to or buying synthetic marble
when you wanted real marble.
• Knowledge will help you pick the cremation urn or keepsake most
suitable for your needs.
Aluminum
• Aluminum is the second most widely used metal in the world.
Aluminum cremation urn for ashes are lightweight, malleable,
corrosion resistant, and non-magnetic.
Biodegradable Materials
• There are a wide variety of environmentally friendly materials being used
to make biodegradable cremation urns: handmade paper, recycled paper,
rock salt, sand, gelatin, cornstarch, or other plant based materials.
• These materials are sturdy enough to be
handled until the time when the urn is
either placed in water or
buried in the earth.
Brass
• Brass is a lightweight metal alloy made of 90% copper and 10% zinc. It
gives off a bright golden appearance when polished. Brass urns are
finished with bronze or pewter to strengthen it.
Bronze
• Bronze is a metal alloy with a warm, reddish hue that consists of 90%
copper and 10% tin. It is an inexpensive solution for necklace charms
and pendant. It is resistant to corrosion but it will tarnish, turning the
reddish hue darker, over time.
Ceramic
• Ceramic cremation urns can be designed with different effects, such
as metallic accents and paint.
• Ceramic urns can be fragile and are best used when displayed in a
home or in a columbarium.
Many high quality, artistic design
shapes are made in ceramic.
Copper
• Copper is a lightweight, malleable metal that is reddish brown.
Copper wire is used in cloisonné urns. It is non-magnetic and
corrosion resistant.
• Copper is easy to clean since it will oxidize and turn greenish-blue
over time (at least 20 years).
Cultured Marble
• Cultured marble is more affordable than real marble. These urns are
hand-crafted from a blend of stone, resin, and color pigments.
Cultured marble urns maintain the beauty of real marble, are crafted
to be durable, and can be polished to a brilliant luster.
Enamel
• Enamel is used to decorate the exterior of metal cremation urns.
• Adding a layer of enamel to a cremation urn creates a smooth, hard,
chemically resistant, durable, and scratch resistant surface.
Glass
• Glass is a beautiful translucent material that come in a wide range of
colors. It is a very versatile material and can be used to create urns,
candle holders, keepsakes, and accent jewelry.
• You can choose to combine the cremated ashes with the glass to
create beautiful keepsakes and urns.
Glass is used as an accent material
to this Sterling Silver Pendant.
Gold Vermeil
• Vermeil (pronounced vehr-MAY) is produced when sterling silver is
coated with 10K gold thicker than 2.5 micrometers
• Necklace charms to hold ashes that are vermeil are more durable and
longer-lasting than a gold-plated pendant.
Marble
• Marble formed from limestone with heat and pressure over the
course of years. It has many decorative uses and comes in a range of
colors.
• It is prized and highly valued for its beauty, strength,
and resistance to fire and erosion.
Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF)
• MDF is a used to create strong, inexpensive cremation urns for ashes
that maintain the beauty of wood.
• MDF is made from parts of a wooden log that remain after boards
have been cut and removed. The remaining wood is cleaned, put in a
wood chipper, then pressed into boards.
Pewter
• Pewter is an alloy made of tin (up to 90%), bismuth, antimony, and
sometimes silver or copper. Pewter is glossy and bright. Brass is
sometimes plated with pewter. Over time, the metal oxidizes and
acquires a grayish tint.
Serpentine
• OneWorld Memorial’s Jadestone collection is crafted from serpentine,
also known as New Jade.
• Serpentine comes in a lovely shades of
numerous colors. Its lustrous exterior
can feel greasy, waxy or silky to the touch.
Stainless Steel
• Stainless steel is a steel alloy consisting of approximately 10.5%
chromium, making it scratch resistant. It is hypoallergenic, but is
prone to rusting and requires occasional upkeep. Similar to titanium,
it has a brilliant silver luster and is an inexpensive material.
Sterling Silver
• Sterling silver is used in many pendants and necklaces for cremated
remains. It is comprised of 92.5% silver and 7.5% of other metals,
usually copper. The copper lends strength to the structure. It does not
tarnish. Sterling silver jewelry requires regular cleaning.
Titanium
• Titanium is the strongest metal in the world. It has a brilliant silver
sheen when polished. Titanium pendants to hold ashes are non-magnetic,
hypoallergenic, and do not rust or tarnish. Cremation
jewelry made from titanium is harder to scratch but needs to be
polished and cleaned on occasion.
White Bronze
• White bronze an alloy of varying amounts of copper, tin, and zinc. It
resembles sterling silver in color, but has the texture of bronze.
• White bronze is non-magnetic, very smooth, and virtually nonporous.
White Gold
• White gold consists of yellow gold with one or more white colored
metals, usually silver, but sometimes palladium, platinum or nickel.
White gold is plated with rhodium to give it a shiny appearance.
Wood
• Wood cremation urns are crafted commonly from cherry, maple, pine,
oak, walnut and poplar. Wood urns are generally stained and may be
adorned with inlays, appliques and laser etchings. Wood urns are
most often purchased for home or cemetery columbarium
placement.
The burl wood lids on these chests add a
beautiful and one-of-a-kind accent.
