Business Process Management, Enterprise SOA and the new IT Business Challenges today BPM: the new IT The rise of the Process Platform The “A” of Architecture BPM Systems 1 2 3 4 5 6 Key Points
Business Challenges Today Globalization Extreme competition Faster and faster innovation The rise of Value networks Outsource Context to focus on Core And all this in a Downturn!
Business Challenges today BPM: the new IT The rise of the Process Platform The “A” of Architecture BPM Systems 1 2 3 4 5 6 Key Points Business Process Management, Enterprise SOA and the new IT
What’s wrong with the old IT? It’s Electronic Concrete It supports yesterday’s processes One size does NOT fit all You cannot downsize if the economy goes down It’s a cost sink of massive proportions Innovation only at the vendor speed Replacing it is a nightmare It’s All or Nothing: “Big Bang” programs instead of incremental change
The New IT:Business Process Management The new IT focuses on Business Process Sharing of processes and data Enabling Cross-functional collaboration Centre stage for the user across all applications Making IT costs variable The eternal Business – IT gap is finally bridged: “ What you model is what you run ” The new IT infrastucture is not based on Applications but on the autonomous layers of a Process Platform It’s the same model !
Business Challenges today BPM: the new IT The rise of the Process Platform The “A” of Architecture BPM Systems 1 2 3 4 5 6 Key Points Business Process Management, Enterprise SOA and the new IT
The Rise of the Process Platform We are witnessing the rise of the Process Platform in IT Enabling technologies are maturing and are delivered in “platform suites” Applications increasingly make use of these generic enabling technologies as “building blocks” And the fun part is: most companies already own and use several layers of the Process Platform today!
The rise of the Process Platform Application Architecture is moving from application-centric to platform-centric In the coming years (2009-2012) decisions on investment and deployment of new infrastructure or applications solutions must be aligned with this paradigm shift to serve business priorities and to prevent wasting money Integration BPM and BI Presentation Application centric Platform centric
The road to a Process Platform: traditional applications Traditionally applications have been self-contained units delivering functionality to their users independently and integrating information through interfaces and connections “under the hood” This has led to widespread Application Integration Spaghetti In this model, applications are user-facing through proprietary user interfaces, have their internal business logic and use a proprietary database to store their data 1 Application Application Application Database Business Logic UI
The road to a Process Platform: a shared infrastructure Increasingly over time these traditional applications were deployed on a common shared infrastructure platform Application Application Application Database Business Logic UI Infrastructure Platform Hosting Services Network Services Desktop Services Printing Services Database Business Logic UI Database Business Logic UI Application Database Business Logic UI Virtualization 2
The road to a Process Platform: Enterprise Application Integration In the late 90s specific integration software arrived that was able to create order in the spaghetti chaos under the hood: Enterprise Application Integration This enabled rewiring the Spaghetti into orderly messsage exchange “under the hood” Application Application Application Application Infrastructure Platform Enterprise Application Integration Adapters Adapters Adapters Adapters Mapping, Transformation, Message routing 3
The road to a Process Platform: Portals In the early 00s specific software arrived that was able to create a unified user experience through decoupling the UI from the application logic: Portals This enabled a unified role-based view on functionality for the user Infrastructure Platform Enterprise Application Integration Portal layer Application Application Application Database Business Logic Database Business Logic Database Business Logic Application Database Business Logic Role Based user Interface Mapping, User management, Portlets & Navigation Logic 4
The road to a Process Platform: Service Oriented Architecture The SOA architectural style enables the development of reusable services that can be orchestrated and composed into composite applications crossing functional domains Infrastructure Platform Enterprise Application Integration Portal layer Application Application Application Application 5 SOA Provisioning Layer Composite Application Composite Application Services Services Services Repository
The road to a Process Platform: Business Process Management & Workflow Over the last few years special software arrived (BPMS) that can model and execute Business Processes based on formal Business Rules using underlying application logic packaged as services 6 Infrastructure Platform Enterprise Application Integration Portal layer Application Application Application Application SOA Provisioning Layer Business Process Management Suite Services Repository
The road to a Process Platform: Embedded Business Intelligence added to the mix The quality of management of business processes is improved through Business Activity Monitoring and embedded Business Intelligence 7 Infrastructure Platform Enterprise Application Integration Portal layer Application Application Application Application SOA Provisioning Layer Business Process Management Suite Services Repository BAM Dashboard BI BI Dashboard Enterprise Content Management
Business Challenges today BPM: the new IT The rise of the Process Platform The “A” of Architecture BPM Systems 1 2 3 4 5 6 Key Points Business Process Management, Enterprise SOA and the new IT
Architecture is the key to the Process Platform and Enterprise BPM Leveraging BPM and SOA for the enterprise can only be done by applying holistic Enterprise Architecture The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) is the industry-leading best practice framework for Enterprise Architecture Adopted by SAP in its Enterprise Architecture Framework Characteristics: A Process-oriented iterative approach to architecture (End to End) Aware that there are no “Green Fields” Putting Business first Involving all stakeholders in one Process Provides guidance on improving Process, Content, Program Management and Innovation

Business Process Management Suites A Business Process Management Suite (BPMS) is a software stack enabling the deployment and management of business processes independent of underlying applications Beware: BPM Suites are new products The software suites are currently hyped , but there are still many contenders with a shake-out to follow in the coming years SAP is very late to market with its NetWeaver BPM product, which is currently not yet fully functional (eg no “intermediate events” which are almost always required in production-ready scenario’s )
An Example The example used shows the Design Time environment of SAP NetWeaver BPM which can be accessed in the NetWeaver Developer Studio view “Process Composer” It shows the modeling of a Purchase Approval Process with mixed human and system activities If you would like a more comprehensive demo we can arrange for this separately using our live demo environment
