Neal is currently studying television and film production and has learned industry standard skills and improved his video production quality over the past 3 years. He plans to pursue a career as a freelance sound recordist for film and television after graduation and gaining more experience, and has outlined his qualifications, goals, and plans to achieve his career aspirations.

2. Television and Film
Production
I am currently in my 3rd year studying Television and
Film Production.
Over my time at the university, i have learnt a lot of
skills, and new equipment that are industry standard, as
you can see from the videos i have created since
college, the profession of the videos have been
improved.
Once i have finished my time at university i will be
looking for experience, and trying to get into the role that
has great interest in me the most, Sound and Camera.

3. Industry I wish to work in:
After finishing 3 successful years at Portsmouth
University. I will be heading towards Film and TV.
Hearing from other freelancers that are experienced,
they aim to tell us to get experience as much as
possible.
I aim to become a freelance Sound Recordist
specialising in TV and Film.

4. Job Profile
Although, my aim is to get into freelance Sound
Recordist, but i would also look into getting a secured
career job.
When studying Television and Film Production, there
are many job roles you can work as and it has taken
me, and I'm sure everyone else aswell what job title to
choose.

5. Job Examples
This is a job advertisement taken from
BBC.
The role is for Sound Assistant (freelance),
this is one of the roles i would love to go for
when i finish my time at university.
Sound Assistants have to have technical
knowledge for the operation and the
maintenance of sound equipment
Have excellent hearing so that, so you
know the levels of the sound when
recording
They usually work in the production and
post production, where they will be working
under the supervision of sound supervisor.

6. Action Plan
Before i started University i had a lot of skills in Media Production as i had
just finished a college course in Media Production TV and Film. So i have
gained experience from being a all the roles in the technical side to a
Producer.
My goal during my time at Portsmouth University is to complete the years
of the course to my best of my ability and get the right job that i have aimed
for using the experience and qualifications that i have gained during my
time at Portsmouth Uni.
I will be able to attain my goal by showing how that particular task is done,
how i have achieved to make the movie by showing any evidence on how i
have done it. As evidence i can show the main footage, all the post and pre
production work.

7. Career Plan - Future
In this section I will be talking about the my future career plan. Once I finish
my degree, with all the experiences and knowledge I have gained over the
3 years, I would like start of by working at some small companies, to see
how it is really like working for a company. Once I get used to working
conditions, then I start moving upwards and work for big companies such
as BBC, ITV, Channel 4 etc.
I would also love to work in concerts doing camera work, live shows,
music, sound engineer, photography etc. Every time I go to a concert I
always tend to have a look at what equipment they use for each show,
what kind of set up is it?
Also alongside with the job, I would like to do some freelance work, in my
free time when I am not at work, just to improve the experience I have.

8. Future Improvements
Updating your website is always important because, you let people
know what you are up to and what new experiences you have.
Keeping up with the latest projects and the recent projects you have
created.
In the future, at my time in University I would like to try out new
products, and gain more experience in the professional industry, for
future when i graduate. When I say new products, I mean visual AV
mixers, new cameras, and any other equipment for filming. At the
moment I am in the process of trying out a Yamaha AV visual mixer
(20/02/2013). The iPad can be synced with the visual mixer and
controlling the sound levels. This mixer can be used for live
performances and recording music, its a 32 channel mixer.

9. Tumblr
Tumblr is a social networking website, where you showcase all
of your work to anyone in the world (if you choose to).
Not just showcasing you can who the process of how you
created the video, which is what i have done, where i have
posted screenshots of me editing videos, and developing
business cards. This way, if anyone is having trouble in
making something similar to what i am doing, then they can
have a look at my blog and it will show them how to develop it.
Tumblr is basically a diary, posting regular updates.

10. Logo
I had created the logo
myself, using Photoshop.
On the Tumblr page i
documented each step of
the process in creating the
logo.
This is only the first draft of
the logo, there will be
changes being made,which i
will be posting in the blog.

My initial design of my website was a black background with
the necessary tabs to be displayed to promote myself. The
proposed tabs i had in my first draft were Home, About Me, CV,
Action Plan, Career Plan - Future, Career Plan - Now, Portfolio,
Photography and Contact. This tabs were all for last years
topic ePortfolio, where we had to create a website, with the
above tabs included
Now that i am creating the website purely for the industry, will
be be changes and getting rid of most of the tabs, that are
needed, as people who are looking at my website would get
bored.

13. Portfolio
I believe, this is the most
important page on my website, as
this will promote me.
This is where most of the viewers
will go to, and have a look at the
videos i have been on.
The work on my Portfolio page, is
all my work i have created in my
final year College, and all three
years in University, so viewers
can see the development of the
videos as the years go on.

14. Strengths
Good experience in Photography, Videography, Sound.
Get as much experience as possible to get noticed by employers
Time Management, always be on time, there is always time to
improve your time management
I believe i have enough experience working as a team and
individually
The course i am studying at the moment has given me a real
though on how the real life filming making is. This is from talks we
have been getting from people who are experienced and work on
film sets.

15. Weaknesses
At this moment in time, there comes a time when you are so busy with
work and you don't have time at all to keep updating your Tumblr page.
This is where i need to start improving this as, and the way i am going to
do this is by, keeping reminders on my phone, until i start getting used to
the routine.
I always lack on research, i believe i don't do enough research, for when i
am doing developments. Researching would benefit you, developing ur
chosen idea, and looking into it even further.
I should try and avoid taking on more tasks i can handle. If i take on more
tasks, then the quality of of the work wont be that great. If i concentrate on
the tasks i can handle then the quality of the work will be there. I can spend
more time on the tasks set.

16. Opportunities
Well, there is a lot of opportunities available in the real world,
but the positions are getting filed quite quickly, and it is quite
hard to get a job that is in your area, because of the
competition with everyone else that is applying for the job.
To get the a job, you need to have as much experience as
possible.
Its good to have contacts in the industry. I have quite a few
contacts in the industry like BBC and Sky. At the moment i am
trying to get some work experience for Sky doing anything in
sound.

17. Threats
After university, i wont be able to use the equipment
and resources like, camera, sound equipment, Avid,
FCP. I would have to invest in getting the necessary
equipment and resources to keep practising and work
freelance
Whilst at university there is only much you can take on.
Whilst trying to get experience, i always make sure i
see how much work i get done or have left. If i know i
have a lot of work to do then i wouldn't try and look for
experience.

18. Showreel
At the moment i haven't yet created my showreel, as i
wanted to to finish all of my uni projects that will in
included in the showreel.
For now i have been researching on how i can make
this showreel attract potential employers that will hire
me.
I want to make my showreel different, as i am going to
pursue my career in sound, i should experiment
different types of sound in the showreel

I want to try and get my CV to be as best as possible.
This is the first draft that i had sent to my tutor, making any
comments or any changes i needed to make
At the moment my CV is 2 and a half pages long. For the industry
standard or any job you are applying for CV’s are meant to be only
2 pages long
The feedback i got from was to change the layout slightly, adding
my logo, changing some of the positions of the sections.
Once the corrections have been made i will be sending it back to
my tutor, to have another look.

24. Future Work
To complete this unit, i have to complete the following:
Finish off my website, making sure it is neat and presentable
Make my showreel, once all the university projects have been
completed.
Touch up on CV, making sure it is up to date
Order business cards, once they have been finalised with my
tutor
Have everything completed on the Tumblr page.
