The document discusses a student's media project about a romantic drama film. The student followed conventions of the genre, portraying a love story that turns tragic when the girl dumps the boy, causing him to commit suicide. The project aims to highlight the negative effects of relationships leading to depression and suicide among young people. For distribution, the student hopes for partnerships with major studios to release the film widely in theaters, online, and through promotional merchandise. Through this project, the student learned various film production skills like camera angles, shots, sound, and use of hardware like tripods and editing software.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
2. Q1. HOW DOES YOUR PROJECT USE OR
CHALLENGE CONVENTIONS AND HOW DO
THEY REPRESENT SOCIAL GROUPS OR ISSUES?
There is a huge chunk of audience who prefer romantic films over any
other genre, and adding in tragedy to the love story is like adding
spice. I took inspiration from various movies from Bollywood like
Ghajini (Hindi Movie) for some scenes. The genre of my movie is
drama. I am portraying the love story of a guy and girl. But when girl
dumped him he became weak and committed suicide. I am following
the conventions of drama with the help of flashbacks.
3. The social issue that I am trying to explain in my movie is that youngster are getting
into relationship which leads to depression and suicide, which is giving our younger
generation a negative effect. People will think if they don’t achieve anything in relation
so they can easily commit suicide. Also, We are the up coming generation of our
country and if teenagers get into this and commit suicide this will be a big distraction
for our country.
4. Q2.HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT ENGAGE WITH
AUDIENCES AND HOW WOULD IT BE DISTRIBUTED
AS A REAL MEDIA TEXT?
My media product is aimed at the teens and mostly females of age 18 as they are
intrested in love stories and tragedies. My objective is to entertain the audience. Love is a
feeling which many people associate to so i think they will be able to relate with my story.
The background music which is emotional this will also engage the audience with my film
giving them a real feel.
I would like Warner Brothers to distribute my movie as they come in the big 6 production
houses. Another reason to choose them is that they are really famous across the world.
5. My next idea would be to release my films on dvds
after a month it releases in theatres and maybe it on
itunes for buying. After that i will release it on netflix
too. I will make a twitter handle and facebook page for
promotions. I will make customized shirts of my film
and distribute it in stores for promotions. This will
even help further attract more audience, and my film
would reach maximum people.
6. Q3. HOW DID YOUR PRODUCTION
SKILLS DEVELOP THROUGHOUT
THIS PROJECT?
I chose media as my subject because I wanted to learn more about
movies. However, Media Studies is so much more than just a subject that
tells you about different movie cultures. Media studies helped me in
different variation like how to direct a film, edit it, capture it and more
about camera angles.
7. HEADROOM
1- In the first we got to know about headroom, which is the space between the subject’s
top of the head and the frame. It is used to include the sense of space on both sides of
the frame.
2- What we have to take care of is that there should not be too much headroom in the
picture or no headroom at all. If for instance, our subject is a human then the human’s
nose should not be the
middle of the frame in case of a mid-shot.
8. FRAMING
We got to know about it when we started capturing pictures and when we started
shooting for our assignments. In framing the rule of thirds is a concept in video and film
production in which the frame is divided into nine imaginary sections, out of which your
subject is placed on almost one-third of the image. For examples you can see the
image below.
9. TYPES OF SHOTS
▪ We have learned about various types of camera angles with camera shots.
▪ Firstly, we studied about camera angle that is an extreme wide shot. This shot is basically
so high from the sky that the subject/object is not even visible. It is also known as the
‘establishing shot’. Then second shot that we studied was wide shot, which is a lesser
closer version of the extreme wide shot. In my movie I have used this as my opening scene
where we can see the background which has significance importance showing how my scene
is going on. It also lays emphasis on the day light in which I have done my shooting. Then
there is a wide shot, which is quite similar to a very wide shot but here the subject is very
visible and not just the background. You can see the picture below.
10. We have also studied about the mid shot which I have used in my movie as well in the
starting. Mid shot is a shot in which the shot is taken from head to its waist.
We have also learned about the Point of view shot is a shot which shows the view from
the subject’s perspective.
Another shot that we have learned is over the shoulder, over the shoulder shot is basically
taken from an angle that is over the subject’s shoulder showing him/her talking to another
person. As you can see below I took this shot in my movie when I was shooting in the car.
11. Q4. HOW DID YOU INTEGRATE
TECHNOLOGIES IN THIS PROJECT?
When I first started working on my project I came across many
software's and online websites. I had to learn how to edit my movies and
my project. We were firstly asked to make a blog, first I had some
difficulties like how will I use it and how will I upload my movies but
when we started working on our assignments I was motivated and
interested more into this subject. After learning about blogs it became
much easier for me as now the only thing complicated was the editing.
12. SOUND
Sound plays an important role in the movie.
I have used Di- Evantile Glaze in my movie as a background
music. As we can see it’s a sad story so I have used a good
quality of sad tone in the background. I found this tone on
google.
13. Hardware
Tripod: When it comes to the shooting part we
don’t only need camera, lenses and person to
shoot it. We need many things as i used tripod in
my shots as it keeps the video still and makes the
shot look more realistic. First when i started using
tripod it was hard to handle it but when the media
classes passed away it became really easy for me
to shoot using a tripod. It was really hard to shoot
in car but i managed to do it.
14. Camera
I used 1100D canon for my movie. At
first i didn't know how to shoot a
movie but then we were taught and
then i started looking tutorials on
youtube, to get to know about the
good quality movie. Shooting was
the most easiest task comparatively
to other work we had to do in the
movie making process.
