 Ans. The genre of my three minute movie opening is horror
mystery. Horror films are unsettling films designed to
frighten, panic, and cause dread and alarm. Horror films
invoke our hidden worst fears, often in a terrifying,
shocking finale, while captivating and entertaining us at
the same time in a cathartic experience. Horror films often
deal with viewers' nightmares, fears, revulsions
and terror of the unknown. Plots within the horror genre
often involve the intrusion of an evil force, event, or
personage into the everyday world. The story of my film is
about a girl and her diary whose uncertain tragic death
rebounded her soul in the diary and her resentment
obligate her to bring the murderer into vengeance.
 MISE-EN-SCENE:-
 Usually set in isolated areas where there is no help for the characters and
no hope of finding somewhere to run. There is also the use of pathetic
fallacy which consists of thunder and rain used to enhance on the use of
isolation. The use of props include weapons or antiques, also paintings are
a big prop used to create a dark and sinister scene. Colors' used within
horror films are usually reds or blacks because they suggest danger and
death.
 Dark Lighting is used in horror films to give the effect of something bad is
about to happen for example shadows and light flickering causes the
audience to feel scared and nervous. As well as this lighting can be used to
give mood in horror films.
 Costumes vary in horror films because they have stereo typical characters
which are dressed different for example the ghost is always in the full
white or black costume.
 Many props are used in horror films to suggest horror
for example; Bibles Crucifix Paintings Candles
Weapons etc.
 Sound Audio is key when editing, using Foley sound
will help build suspense.
 Exaggerated diegetic sound will allow tension to be
created in the film • Fast and loud non diegetic sound
can add to making the audience jump or feel scared
 Blood splatter shadows
 The ghost is most likely to be a girl of any age
 Happy ending usually
CONVENTIONS I
CHALLENGED
• The ghost is wearing
the white dress.
• I have tried to shoot in
dim lighting.
• I have used red paint
for blood.
• Likewise every horror
movie I have also used
creepy background
music.
• Female ghost.
CONVENTIONS I DID
NOT CHALLENGED
Where as kids and old
age people would avoid
to watch it.
Ans. My product will engage with audience because it is a
mysterious horror story based on public likes and interest ,
and entertaining movie which will attract people merely
interested in media world. As movies are considered as
good recreational activity and people take out time off their
busy schedule to enjoy some good extravaganza . More over
horror mystery movies are watched more frequently as
mystery is a new cool in the media industry.
My movie will attract teenager adult audience because I
have very much kept the choices and ideas of the
spectators in account . And I will try to distribute the
movie in such a way that people will watch it.
 Once the movie is complete, as it’s a low budget
production I don’t see a distributer getting involved.
Therefore the distribution for my film would be done by
My own self.
 I will use my personal contacts and social networking
platforms such as face book, snap chat, YouTube, twitter,
insta gram, Netflix, IMDB, etc for the marketing of my
movie.
 With the help of my family and friends I will publish
posters and flyers of my movie in different streets and local
markets.
 I will dress some teenagers into creepy costumes,
correlated with my movie, and ask them to roam around
the streets .
 I will upload the trailers of my movie on YouTube and
other sites like daily motion etc.
 I will also advertise my movie on radio for those people
who are not very active on social media sites.
I will also release
my movie on DVD
And will release the soundtrack
of my movie on iTunes.
 Ans. When I first choose media as a subject it was due to my
interest in movies, photography and editing and also because
of my obsession to find out what is going on in media world.
However media studies is so much just more than a subject
which tells us about different movie cultures. I have learned a
lot in the time between filming my preliminary and my final
film. I have learnt about different camera angles and ,
choosing a location for shoot , different editing cuts , framing
, editing the movie , most importantly patience and making
of story board which helped a lot when I went for shooting as
I knew how to shoot a shot . I have also learned a lot about the
general conventions of the films, as I looked at many types of
films during my planning which develop a sense to develop
different type of films.
This is the first and basic
yet new concept that was
taught to us in the first
class. headroom is the
space between the
subject’s top of the head
and the frame. It is used to
include the sense of space
on both sides of the frame.
Also, what we have to take
care of is that there should
not be too much
headroom in the picture
or no headroom at all. If
for instance, our subject is
a human then the human’s
nose should not be the
middle of the frame incase
of a mid-shot.
Headroom changes as the camera zooms in or out, and the
camera must simultaneously tilt up or down to keep the
center of interest approximately one-third of the way down
from the top of the frame. The closer the subject, the less
headroom needed. In extreme close-ups, the top of the
head is out of the frame, but the concept of headroom still
applies via the rule of thirds
 We have learnt many types of editing
cuts:
 A jump cut is basically an abrupt cut in which
shots of the same subject have been taken
from camera positions that vary very slightly.
Its used to give the dramatic effect of jumping
forward in time. I have also used jump cuts in
my movie as mentioned above it produces a
dramatic effect which attract audience.
 Parallel editing also known as cross cutting
is the technique of alternating two or more
scenes that often happen simultaneously but
are in different locations. If the scenes are
simultaneous, they occasionally culminate in
a single place, where the relevant parties
confront each other.
Anther type of cut is also
known as a slow cut.
These are shots of
longer duration with the
same subject. However,
such shots that go up to
15 seconds may be
called a drag as it would
come across the
audience as annoying.
 I’ve used different type of software and it helped me to
learn different techniques .
 In editing, I learned how to merge slides so it gives a
dissolve effect.(dragging a video clip on to the previous
one).
 . I also used many transitions like fade in and fade out
etc.
 Changing the colors of the slides, reducing the length
of the clips so it gives a unwrinkled continuous effect
when the video is been watched.
 Placing the credit on the exact slide I want and
allocating it with the perfect animation was a very time
consuming task. And especially to select the right font
and animation for the name of the movie.
EXTREME CLOSE UP
CLOSE UP
Close up shots are used to show an object
in such detail that it blurs the background
around the image. However it can also be
used in a drama or film to get close to the
actors so that the audience feel almost
involved in what is happening.
An extreme - close up is similar to close up,
but an extreme close up usually fits the
whole frame of a photo, and you can only see
a certain feature within the frame, for
instance a human feature that focuses solely
on the eyes. This is done to create tension
within a scene or image.
HIGH ANGLE SHOT
LOW ANGLE SHOT
This angle looks down on someone,
it makes the person or object small
and insignificant. This is used in a
TV drama when they want to know
someone has more power than
someone else
This angle looks up on something or
someone making it look bigger than
it really is. It is the opposite of a high
angle. It is commonly used in TV
shows when they want someone to
look big and powerful.
POINT OF VIEW SHOT
OVER THE SHOULDER SHOT
Point of view shots are shot in the
perspective of a character within the
film, it is as if the audience are
experiencing everything the character
goes through within that scene. It is a
technique used to make the audience
feel like they are part of the film, and
actually are the main character.
Over the shoulder shots are used to show
the perspective of a character, as if they
are being watched or followed by
somebody. The purpose of this type shot
is to engage the audience as if they are in
the presence of the characters.
TWO SHOT
MID SHOT
A two shot is mostly used in TV dramas w
here it shows friends side by side.
However it can also be used show
relationships. The main purpose of this
shot is for the audience to see what sort
of relationship the characters have
between them.
Mid shot is where the camera focuses on
a figure from the waist upwards, or an
object with little zoom. The middle shot
outlines the characters and the
background has little detail, very
minimal and usually blurry.
Ans. While doing this project I had to come
across many software's and online websites. I
also had to learn how to use editing software's
and learn the different techniques it had. The first
thing we were all asked to do was to make an
online blog so that we could update all our
assignments over there. In the beginning I had
no idea what a blog is but now after working on
my several assignments, I have a command on it
and can use it very well.
To shoot a film, you not only needed
a camera and a person behind it but
many more important elements
without which a good movie
production could not be made.
Among the many necessary
hardware equipments, one was a
tripod. I have never used one before
filming my preliminary and final
film. tripods are used for both
motion and still photography to
prevent camera movement and
provide stability. They are especially
necessary when slow-speed
exposures are being made. In
relation to film/video, use of the
tripod offers stability within a shot
as well as certain desired heights.
The use of a tripod within
film/video is often a creative choice
of the Director.
The camera I used to
shoot the opening
sequence of my movie
was NIKON DSLR
3300D. However . I had
to watch some YouTube
tutorials regarding how
to make a good quality
video from it and then I
got a hang of it.

Creative critical reflection

  • 2.  Ans. The genre of my three minute movie opening is horror mystery. Horror films are unsettling films designed to frighten, panic, and cause dread and alarm. Horror films invoke our hidden worst fears, often in a terrifying, shocking finale, while captivating and entertaining us at the same time in a cathartic experience. Horror films often deal with viewers' nightmares, fears, revulsions and terror of the unknown. Plots within the horror genre often involve the intrusion of an evil force, event, or personage into the everyday world. The story of my film is about a girl and her diary whose uncertain tragic death rebounded her soul in the diary and her resentment obligate her to bring the murderer into vengeance.

  • 4.  MISE-EN-SCENE:-  Usually set in isolated areas where there is no help for the characters and no hope of finding somewhere to run. There is also the use of pathetic fallacy which consists of thunder and rain used to enhance on the use of isolation. The use of props include weapons or antiques, also paintings are a big prop used to create a dark and sinister scene. Colors' used within horror films are usually reds or blacks because they suggest danger and death.  Dark Lighting is used in horror films to give the effect of something bad is about to happen for example shadows and light flickering causes the audience to feel scared and nervous. As well as this lighting can be used to give mood in horror films.  Costumes vary in horror films because they have stereo typical characters which are dressed different for example the ghost is always in the full white or black costume.
  • 5.  Many props are used in horror films to suggest horror for example; Bibles Crucifix Paintings Candles Weapons etc.  Sound Audio is key when editing, using Foley sound will help build suspense.  Exaggerated diegetic sound will allow tension to be created in the film • Fast and loud non diegetic sound can add to making the audience jump or feel scared  Blood splatter shadows  The ghost is most likely to be a girl of any age  Happy ending usually
  • 7. • The ghost is wearing the white dress. • I have tried to shoot in dim lighting. • I have used red paint for blood. • Likewise every horror movie I have also used creepy background music. • Female ghost. CONVENTIONS I DID NOT CHALLENGED

  • 9. Where as kids and old age people would avoid to watch it.
  • 10. Ans. My product will engage with audience because it is a mysterious horror story based on public likes and interest , and entertaining movie which will attract people merely interested in media world. As movies are considered as good recreational activity and people take out time off their busy schedule to enjoy some good extravaganza . More over horror mystery movies are watched more frequently as mystery is a new cool in the media industry. My movie will attract teenager adult audience because I have very much kept the choices and ideas of the spectators in account . And I will try to distribute the movie in such a way that people will watch it.
  • 11.  Once the movie is complete, as it’s a low budget production I don’t see a distributer getting involved. Therefore the distribution for my film would be done by My own self.  I will use my personal contacts and social networking platforms such as face book, snap chat, YouTube, twitter, insta gram, Netflix, IMDB, etc for the marketing of my movie.  With the help of my family and friends I will publish posters and flyers of my movie in different streets and local markets.  I will dress some teenagers into creepy costumes, correlated with my movie, and ask them to roam around the streets .
  • 12.  I will upload the trailers of my movie on YouTube and other sites like daily motion etc.  I will also advertise my movie on radio for those people who are not very active on social media sites.
  • 13. I will also release my movie on DVD And will release the soundtrack of my movie on iTunes.
  • 14.  Ans. When I first choose media as a subject it was due to my interest in movies, photography and editing and also because of my obsession to find out what is going on in media world. However media studies is so much just more than a subject which tells us about different movie cultures. I have learned a lot in the time between filming my preliminary and my final film. I have learnt about different camera angles and , choosing a location for shoot , different editing cuts , framing , editing the movie , most importantly patience and making of story board which helped a lot when I went for shooting as I knew how to shoot a shot . I have also learned a lot about the general conventions of the films, as I looked at many types of films during my planning which develop a sense to develop different type of films.
  • 15. This is the first and basic yet new concept that was taught to us in the first class. headroom is the space between the subject’s top of the head and the frame. It is used to include the sense of space on both sides of the frame. Also, what we have to take care of is that there should not be too much headroom in the picture or no headroom at all. If for instance, our subject is a human then the human’s nose should not be the middle of the frame incase of a mid-shot. Headroom changes as the camera zooms in or out, and the camera must simultaneously tilt up or down to keep the center of interest approximately one-third of the way down from the top of the frame. The closer the subject, the less headroom needed. In extreme close-ups, the top of the head is out of the frame, but the concept of headroom still applies via the rule of thirds

  • 17.  We have learnt many types of editing cuts:  A jump cut is basically an abrupt cut in which shots of the same subject have been taken from camera positions that vary very slightly. Its used to give the dramatic effect of jumping forward in time. I have also used jump cuts in my movie as mentioned above it produces a dramatic effect which attract audience.  Parallel editing also known as cross cutting is the technique of alternating two or more scenes that often happen simultaneously but are in different locations. If the scenes are simultaneous, they occasionally culminate in a single place, where the relevant parties confront each other. Anther type of cut is also known as a slow cut. These are shots of longer duration with the same subject. However, such shots that go up to 15 seconds may be called a drag as it would come across the audience as annoying.
  • 18.  I’ve used different type of software and it helped me to learn different techniques .  In editing, I learned how to merge slides so it gives a dissolve effect.(dragging a video clip on to the previous one).  . I also used many transitions like fade in and fade out etc.  Changing the colors of the slides, reducing the length of the clips so it gives a unwrinkled continuous effect when the video is been watched.  Placing the credit on the exact slide I want and allocating it with the perfect animation was a very time consuming task. And especially to select the right font and animation for the name of the movie.
  • 19. EXTREME CLOSE UP CLOSE UP Close up shots are used to show an object in such detail that it blurs the background around the image. However it can also be used in a drama or film to get close to the actors so that the audience feel almost involved in what is happening. An extreme - close up is similar to close up, but an extreme close up usually fits the whole frame of a photo, and you can only see a certain feature within the frame, for instance a human feature that focuses solely on the eyes. This is done to create tension within a scene or image.
  • 20. HIGH ANGLE SHOT LOW ANGLE SHOT This angle looks down on someone, it makes the person or object small and insignificant. This is used in a TV drama when they want to know someone has more power than someone else This angle looks up on something or someone making it look bigger than it really is. It is the opposite of a high angle. It is commonly used in TV shows when they want someone to look big and powerful.
  • 21. POINT OF VIEW SHOT OVER THE SHOULDER SHOT Point of view shots are shot in the perspective of a character within the film, it is as if the audience are experiencing everything the character goes through within that scene. It is a technique used to make the audience feel like they are part of the film, and actually are the main character. Over the shoulder shots are used to show the perspective of a character, as if they are being watched or followed by somebody. The purpose of this type shot is to engage the audience as if they are in the presence of the characters.
  • 22. TWO SHOT MID SHOT A two shot is mostly used in TV dramas w here it shows friends side by side. However it can also be used show relationships. The main purpose of this shot is for the audience to see what sort of relationship the characters have between them. Mid shot is where the camera focuses on a figure from the waist upwards, or an object with little zoom. The middle shot outlines the characters and the background has little detail, very minimal and usually blurry.
  • 23. Ans. While doing this project I had to come across many software's and online websites. I also had to learn how to use editing software's and learn the different techniques it had. The first thing we were all asked to do was to make an online blog so that we could update all our assignments over there. In the beginning I had no idea what a blog is but now after working on my several assignments, I have a command on it and can use it very well.
  • 24. To shoot a film, you not only needed a camera and a person behind it but many more important elements without which a good movie production could not be made. Among the many necessary hardware equipments, one was a tripod. I have never used one before filming my preliminary and final film. tripods are used for both motion and still photography to prevent camera movement and provide stability. They are especially necessary when slow-speed exposures are being made. In relation to film/video, use of the tripod offers stability within a shot as well as certain desired heights. The use of a tripod within film/video is often a creative choice of the Director.
  • 25. The camera I used to shoot the opening sequence of my movie was NIKON DSLR 3300D. However . I had to watch some YouTube tutorials regarding how to make a good quality video from it and then I got a hang of it. C A M E R A
