1. Integration and Filtering: Creating
visibility across library resources using
NGL an OSS

Emmanuel Ebnazar
Seminar on "Enhancing Access to Library Resources. A Critical Discussion,
Examination and Evaluation of Web-Scale Discovery Services"
Organized by SLA Asian Chapter in collaboration with Jain University & KALA, sponsored by
ProQuest
Date: 14th Oct 2014
Venue: Jain University, JC Road Campus, Bangalore.

2. Why LMS with information services, KM & Social
media features
⢠Different tools for library automation, IR or Digital Library,
social networking, KM, Search Engines - Inconvenience to
library/ians in terms of Cost & Effort involved in IT
infrastructure required in hosting, maintaining these different
tools.
⢠Library resources dispersed on different databases/locations â
Inconvenience to users, as user had to search multiple
databases/search engines for a piece of information required.
⢠Library services dispersed on different locations â Difficult for
users to follow â Content Pages, New Arrivals, New Book
Request, User self Services, Newsletters.
2
3. Why LMS with information services, KM & Social
media features
This situation was defeating
/damaging the purpose/sprit of
2nd 3rd and 4th laws of library
science.
3
4. Other influencing factors-Changing Scenario
⢠Increase in the scope of media handled by libraries-Physical to
electronic, with different file formats.
⢠Increase in the scope of library services-Circulation, electronic
media, information service, KM, social networking.
⢠Library services to the users from different generations and
changes in media preferences. Influence of Social media.
⢠Changing trends in Publication Industry (Print & Electronic).
⢠Changing business models/pricing of e-resources databases/
aggregators.
4
5. Other influencing factors-Changing Scenario
⢠Open Access Initiatives
⢠Library Competitors which are not taken seriously by LIS
profession but have detrimental impact on library and they
are;
â User self managed e-Journal and e-book databases
(without librarian).
â Online vendors allowing users to buy e-book and
download on e-readers.
â Commercial library service providers like Just Books
Inc, Kwench Inc providing library services in India
threatening survival of corporate & special libraries.
5
6. Other influencing factors-Changing Scenario
⢠Increasing cost of commercial Library automation software.
⢠Increase in the cost of publications and in contrast dwindling
Library Budget.
6
7. Solutions: Single tool/Platform
⢠A single tool with which the library community is
familiar and further which can be exploited and
used not only for library automation but can also be
used for Digital Library resources, knowledge
sharing and social networking.
This is the one solution among various solutions
available to cope up with the existing situation in
LIS
7
8. Review of Literature
⢠Literature search on âLibrary automation toolâ
for âDLâ, âKMâ and âSocial Mediaâ â Ten
important papers.
⢠Single tool is still not a focused area of
research among library researches.
⢠Though there are some theoretical papers
which describes how a single tool can be used
for library automation, DL,IR & KM but these
concepts to be practically checked and realized
by the library researchers or library software
developers.
8
9. Review & Selection of Tool
⢠Studied two open source LMS and two
commercial LMS.
⢠Finalized NGL software that meets
requirements of present day libraries; a single
tool with which the library community is
familiar and which can be exploited and used
not only for library automation but also for
DL/IR, KM and Social Networking.

⢠Organizational policy restrictions.
⢠Non cooperation from the Database Vendors â Cost.
⢠Support from the library automation tool providers/
