HIMALDOC, based on Invenio software, was developed by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) as a tool for the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) regional repository on sustainable mountain development. The HKH region is the source of 10 large Asian river systems. They provide water, ecosystem services, and the basis for livelihoods to more than 210 million people. Much research has been done on social and environmental issues in the HKH by scholars from different universities, regional and international research organizations, governments and UN bodies. But the scientific results and data are either not available online or scattered on different web pages. HIMALDOC aims to collect, harvest and make these resources accessible. The availability of such specific information resources and data through a single interface is crucial to further research, development and policy making.

2. HIMALDOC
• Online library platform
• Initiated, developed and
maintained by the International
Centre for Integrated Mountain
Development (ICIMOD)
3. About ICIMOD
ICIMOD is a regional intergovernmental learning and knowledge sharing centre
serving eight regional member countries
Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan
5. • ICIMOD works towards improved well-
being of the mountain people
• It is a knowledge hub and a regional
platform where policymakers, planners
and practitioners meet to exchange ideas
• ICIMOD’s Knowledge Management and
Communication unit strengthens
institutional capacity for innovation and
learning and shares information and
knowledge through publications, portals,
the internet and capacity building
About ICIMOD
6. Information Resource Centre
• Former ICIMOD library
• Responsible for development and
maintenance of the HIMALDOC
• Has unique collection of information
resources on mountain development
issues
• Before HIMALDOC, it had used other
applications for library catalogue and
institutional repository
(WinISIS, WebAGRIS)
7. Himalayan University Consortium
• One of the ICIMOD Programme
• HUC is a mountain-focused
University Consortium
• In members workshop meeting of
February 2009 in India it was
proposed that ICIMOD should
take the lead and coordinate
efforts to connect the Library
collections of the HUC participants
8. HIMALDOC
• An online platform for
information portal and
connecting libraries
• Powered by Invenio software
• A one-stop portal for Himalayan
information resources
9. • Started in 2010
• The goal of the project is to
provide user communities in the
HKH region and outside access to
a large collection of valuable
mountain information resources
• Started with Elsevier Foundation
Innovative Libraries grant support
• First version released in February
11, 2011
HIMALDOC Project
10. Objectives
• To develop and implement an
integrated library platform which
would serve as
– HKH regional mountain portal
– ICIMOD’s main repository for its
publications
– main portal to information from the
libraries of the HUC (connecting
libraries)
• To make accessible specific mountain
information collection through a single
interface
11. Software selection
• The first task was to select a
software for the platform
• We had set some criteria for
selection
12. Software selection criteria
• FOSS
• Meet the objectives of the project
• Features having
• Combined metadata, full text search in
one go
• Capabilities of handling all kinds of e-
resources (books, photos, videos)
• Different collections, sub-collections and
portal boxes
• Options to search other predefined
servers/libraries/portals
15. Finally
Software selection
• Invenio has been originally developed
at CERN, the European Organization for
Nuclear Research
• http://invenio-software.org/
16. Customization and deployment
• Invenio is very flexible to
customize
• We added some new features
as per our requirements like
highlights, poplars
• Main challenge was to meet our
‘branding’ guidelines
17. Contents
• All major document types
• Focused on
– Sustainable mountain development
(environmental and social) issues
– HKH areas
– Gray literatures
• More than 20k records
• Full text, references only,
references linked with full text
source, embedded
18. • Documents organized in
collections
• Collections are organized in
regular and virtual trees
• Each document has a record
• Each collection can be browse
and search independently
Collection
21. Content migration
• Migrated contents from three
different applications
– WinISIS (reference library)
– Internally developed application for
• Institutional repository
• Photo database
• Challenge was to covert metadata
into MARC/MARCXML format as
Invenio support MARC21
23. Contents and access
• Contains Himalayan specific
information resources
• Records contains
– Reference with free full text
– References linked with full text
source
– References only
33. ICIMOD publications
• Rich volume of publications on different issues of
SMD
• ICIMOD has dedicated Open Access Publishing
policy for all of its knowledge products
• Any publication may be reproduced in whole or in
part and in any form for educational or non-profit
purposes without special permission from the
copyright holder, provided acknowledgement of the
source is made.
• All publications available free full text online access
through HIMALDOC
35. Library linkages
• In process and progress
• Parallel search established with The
Energy and Resources Institute
(TERI), India
• Integrated Mountain Forum library
collection
• Space for hosting
outside publications
