Outside in thinking - How APIs can help open up your business
Many organisations are digital immigrants, traditional enterprises who are making the switch to digital and thinking about how they can release and monetise the true value of the data they have in their backend systems, we call this an Inside Out approach.
A new way of thinking is required for someone to make the crossover into being a true digital immigrant and to start thinking more like the leading digital natives they are trying to follow. We call this thinking Outside In.
This presentation I gave at API Days London discusses how an Outside In approach can help your business adapt quickly, build new ideas and reuse existing APIs to create amazing new products.

What does the future of communication APIs look like?
Valériane Venance, Developer Evangelist at Twilio &
Alexandra Szynkarski, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Twilio
During the last few years, companies started to embrace APIs.
In FRANCE, the API boom really started lately, in 2014.
Today every company wants to build its API.
We had been involved in several API projects : and the goal of this session is to share with you common pitfall that could compromise your API strategy.
APIs used to be a technical implementation detail reserved for developers and architects. In the Web age, APIs make more business sense than ever before. This presentation gives a ring side view of How to Craft Business Strategy around APIs.
Sign up for our beta today! http://datadipity.com/register
Datadipity reduces time to launch by promoting the “Virtualized API stack” with a set of APIs in place, there is no need to architect complex distributed systems. 3rd party APIs are leveraged so that the architecture can be reduced to one code base. This reduces development time. Usability is much easier to maintain during beta release and user acceptance changes are easier to apply.
The trends are clear, ProgrammableWeb, an API repository, eclipsed the 17,000-API mark in the first quarter of 2017. Indeed, since 2005, we've seen APIs grow from a curiosity, to a trend, and now to the point where APIs are core to many businesses. APIs provide tremendous value to countless organizations and developers, however, as APIs continue to grow in number and become more heterogeneous, with the use of emerging technologies such as serverless, containers, and the rise of microservices, we're quickly reaching a tipping point at which things could fall down quickly. So, what's an enterprise to do? This presentation looks at how to define the problem, how to define your own API management requirements, the business case, and what technologies are available now to make you successful the first time.
Presentation from the technology track at I Love APIs London 2016 featuring Ed Anuff, Apigee.
In this session, Ed Anuff, SVP Product Strategy at Apigee discusses how API-first architecture is the bedrock of the modern enterprise and the foundation of a company's system of engagement. He explores why it's a distinctly new tier in the architecture from the previous generation of integration architectures.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise View on Going Big with API Management - Applicatio...CA Technologies
Companies of every size have been disrupted by new business models, new digital devices and new forms of connectivity. But it is the largest enterprises that face the greatest challenges when it comes to integrating their vast legacy architectures with new systems of engagement and innovation that consumers now demand. In this session, Terry White, Fellow and Chief Technologist, Enterprise Services Applications and Business Services at Hewlett Packard Enterprise, will bring more than 30 years of perspective to a discussion on how critical APIs are as a catalyst for legacy application transformation and migration to the cloud. Terry will also cover the importance of being able to manage and secure those APIs to avoid massive service disruptions and security breaches.

"How to create an efficient API.. with a business model?" by Nicolas GreniéTheFamily
A common mistake when discussing API business models is to think of the API first. But everyone should consider how an API will interact with a business model.
We will answer to the following questions:
What is an API? Which business model can you include in an API? How to use the canvas model to build a badass API?
Nicolas Grenié is a Hacker in Residence at 3scale living between Barcelona and San Francisco. He built his first website in 2000 using Microsoft Word, and since them did not stop learning about programming. Nicolas likes to try new languages all the time, so he has experience in PHP, Ruby and Node. When not working you have a good chance to find him hacking on side projects or enjoying a good craft beer. And of course, as he is French, frog and snails are part of his daily diet!
WEBINAR: API Clouds for Faster APIs: Leveraging Existing Assets for the API ...Jason Bloomberg
This webinar will be presented LIVE at 11:00 PST / 2:00 EST on Thursday, November 12. Go to http://go.softwareag.com/K0000DJ00NR33BB000Ho0P0 to register.
Every enterprise is undergoing end-to-end digital transformation, and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are the key to bringing existing IT assets to bear in today's cloud-centric digital initiatives.
Today's APIs are more than just software interfaces. They are the glue that holds the digital world together.
When developers leverage your APIs to create mashups and apps, or to support new devices, your reach is extended, and new channels are opened up to your unique corporate data and services.
If you want to get on board the new API economy to reach new customers and unlock the business value of your corporate assets, you must make your APIs easily accessible to users. The fastest way to do so is with an API Cloud.
Join Digital Transformation thought leader Jason Bloomberg, president of Intellyx, and David Overos from Software AG for a thought-provoking discussion on the role APIs play in enterprise digital initiatives, and how to leverage an API Cloud to quickly participate in today's burgeoning API economy.

Global CIO Banking Summit - Workshop Cultural Changes to Survive Digital Disr...Jeremy Brown
Title: Cultural changes required to be still standing in the aftermath of the Digital Disruption caused by Open Banking and PSD2
The UK and European Regulators have a goal of increasing competition in the banking market around PCA, BCA, SME Loans and Payments. They are effecting this through the CMA Remedies and PSD2 which impose near-term dates for Banks to expose their data and services publicly through APIs. New entrants and Third Party Providers, will seek to gain revenues and market share from established players using the APIs that banks have to provide at no cost. This will fundamentally change the competitive environment and banks need to have a strategy to compete in this digital market. This will require a change to their current people, process and technology which are not aligned to this dynamic digital market. Many banks will end up as a commoditised utility and only one or two will be the big winners in this wave of disruption. This talk will cover the open organisational culture Red Hat believes is needed to be on that (very) short list of digital winners.

Government ICT 2.0 - Removing The G-Cloud Lock InJeremy Brown
In the end my colleague Adrian Keward stepped in for me to deliver this talk but here are my slides from the seminar at the Government ICT 2.0 event in September 2014.
Removing the G-Cloud Lock-in
G-Cloud is a major step forward in promoting competition and an open market for service delivery in UK Public Sector. But it is still one crucial step short of delivering on its potential for government departments to use its services flexibly and without lock-in. At its worst, it risks being nothing more than a framework to purchase 24-month contracts.
Red Hat proposes that Open Source technology and open standards can truly unlock G-Cloud services, putting the department in control of the services it acquires, and enabling agile deployment as well as agile development.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

General Principles for your REST APIs
• Be Pragmatic, not a RESTafarian – for the sake of other developers
• Only need 2 urls per resource
– Collection - /dogs
– Element - /dogs/1234
– POST, GET, PUT and DELETE -> CREATE, READ, UPDATE and DELETE
• Verbs are BAD, Nouns are GOOD
– /getsmalldogs vs /dogs
• Plurals are better
– /dogs
• We favour Data Oriented APIs over Service Oriented APIs
– Learn the data vs learn the services + the date
– Don’t design an API at all, just use REST
• We favour simple, flat JSON
• Versioning
– Don’t! but if you have to we have come to favour putting the version in the sub-domain (if you have to!) – the ‘no-
versioning’ strategy for versioning

4 Best Practices
• Create APIs by product and device type to reduce maintenance
• Create new APIs using existing components with API management to minimize work
from backend teams
• Integrate API Management with your existing CI tooling and processes
• Create an API Tier in front of your microservices to maximize performance
