The document discusses preventing lock-in when using cloud services through the use of open standards. Open standards allow flexibility to choose between vendors and ensure interoperability. Without open standards, vendors have control and customers face issues changing providers. The document recommends insisting on open source, open standards, and open APIs to avoid lock-in and promote choice, productivity, agility, and cost control for customers.

Trends like agile, DevOps and new architectural patterns are increasingly popular not just in startups but in large organisations. This is because there is a tremendous pressure from the business on IT departments to deliver more, faster, in order to stay competitive. If you are trying to deliver a new faster paced innovation platform, gain greater insights into your customers or launch a mobile application, then you are experiencing these pressures – this keynote is the response.
Title: Your organization needs an OSPO, or be ready to fail!
Open source is becoming the main ingredient for companies to success. To achieve it, companies need to manage efficiently their relationship with open source projects. And that’s the main goal for companies’ Open Source Program Office (OSPO).
During this talk, you will learn about the benefits of having an OSPO in your organization, why should companies adapt to open source and adopt an OSPO, how it makes a difference to have a team responsible for viewing, managing, making critical decisions, contributions back to open source projects, and providing oversight for open source initiatives on their company and where they should start. Also, we will give real examples of how companies are doing this today and their impact for the community, like Samsung Open Source Group, Uber, and others.
Additionally, you will learn about communities and initiatives to help you having a successful OSPO, like TODO Group and CHAOSS, the importance of CHAOSS to give actual data and insights about open source projects and a bigger perspective with analytics dashboards, and how data and metrics from the OSPO can help companies tackle their corporate strategy.

OSGi Community Event 2016 Keynote Presentation by Robert Andres (Eurotech) & Walter Hofmann (Hitachi High Technologies)
With the promise of “real” IoT, the requirements for computational capabilities and agility at the edge demand IT-centric architectures and solutions that are based on open and industry standards. “IoT stacks” that are built on OSGi and Java’s solid foundation ensure effective modular software development and management on abstracted hardware.
Total cost of ownership in these IoT solutions matters a lot more than the simple combined hardware and software cost per edge node. Sophisticated software elements – including business intelligence tools, databases, and analytics packages – leverage data remotely and centrally to achieve the best results for customers. A perfect example of an analytics solution using such an approach is the predictive maintenance solution that Hitachi offers, leveraging Eurotech’s IoT hardware and software building blocks that heavily rely on OSGi.

Open Source Impact on Digital TransformationHarsha Kumara
Digital transformation is key for an organization to evolve and remain competitive in the market. It is about building digital experiences that make the life of your consumers easier and more efficient. With digital transformation, organizations are required to adopt to rapid technology changes. This requires support from both the organization and vendors who provide tools to build enterprise systems. Software vendors also face major challenges to build software tools as fast as the market demands it. Open source software has the power to speed up rapid adoption of technology changes with the support from the community.

stackconf 2023 | SCS: Buildig Open Source Cloud and Container Infrastructure ...NETWAYS
Linux is everywhere. Open Source has won! It has not. While Open Source components are all over the place, the big IT players use them to build platforms that are not fully open but designed to lock their users in. The question to ask these days is not: “Are you building on top of open source?”, because everyone is. The question should be: “Do you allow others to rebuild your whole platform?” and “Do you allow others to contribute to it and shape its future?” Sounds utopian? Sovereign Cloud Stack (SCS) tries to do exactly this: Build a network of operators to define common standards together, implement them in a complete, openly developed and fully open source manner and then even collaborate on operating it well — which can be harder than building it. The speaker will discuss the vision behind the the SCS project, how it has build the community and the technology stack, what it has achieved so far and where it will go next.

This webinar recording introduces potential users in the energy industry to the communications specification defined by TROLIE, an LF Energy project aiming to establish an open conformance standard and cultivate a software ecosystem to accelerate the implementation of reliable, secure, and interoperable systems for the exchange of transmission facility ratings and related information. With FERC Order 881 being implemented next year in the United States, most organizations involved in the operation of the transmission system in North America now need to exchange ratings and related information in an automated, frequent manner. This project will help accelerate their implementation and simplify interoperability.
This webinar provides a technical introduction as well as "how to" content from the perspective of TROLIE's primary users - reliability coordinators and transmission owners.
The webinar was presented by Christopher Atkins of MISO and Tory McKeag of GE Vernova.

Getting technology choices right is less than half the battle, organisational change and technology delivery can be far more disruptive and difficult to deliver. Jeremy is a passionate believer in being default to open, whether that applies to code or culture. In his presentation, Jeremy discusses how high performing teams are the result of the context they operate in and by setting up the right open structures and environment you will accelerate your app development and DevOps experience. So the big question is: Can you bring the Open Organisation to your DevOps team and create APIs with the rest of the organisation?
Global CIO Banking Summit - Workshop Cultural Changes to Survive Digital Disr...Jeremy Brown
Title: Cultural changes required to be still standing in the aftermath of the Digital Disruption caused by Open Banking and PSD2
The UK and European Regulators have a goal of increasing competition in the banking market around PCA, BCA, SME Loans and Payments. They are effecting this through the CMA Remedies and PSD2 which impose near-term dates for Banks to expose their data and services publicly through APIs. New entrants and Third Party Providers, will seek to gain revenues and market share from established players using the APIs that banks have to provide at no cost. This will fundamentally change the competitive environment and banks need to have a strategy to compete in this digital market. This will require a change to their current people, process and technology which are not aligned to this dynamic digital market. Many banks will end up as a commoditised utility and only one or two will be the big winners in this wave of disruption. This talk will cover the open organisational culture Red Hat believes is needed to be on that (very) short list of digital winners.

Outside in thinking - How APIs can help open up your business
Many organisations are digital immigrants, traditional enterprises who are making the switch to digital and thinking about how they can release and monetise the true value of the data they have in their backend systems, we call this an Inside Out approach.
A new way of thinking is required for someone to make the crossover into being a true digital immigrant and to start thinking more like the leading digital natives they are trying to follow. We call this thinking Outside In.
This presentation I gave at API Days London discusses how an Outside In approach can help your business adapt quickly, build new ideas and reuse existing APIs to create amazing new products.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.
Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Government ICT 2.0 - Removing The G-Cloud Lock In
1. Removing the G-Cloud lock in
Government ICT 2.0 - Seminar Session One
16th September 2014

4. So, How to Prevent Lock-In?
1980’s: Standards!
1990’s: FOSS – Free Open Source Software
5. And then comes The Cloud
Cloud will be the ultimate lock-in
Back to the Future w lock-in
6. The Broken Way : without open standards
● The vendor defines the level playing field
●Direct Interoperability
●NDA, IPR
● 1:1 deals,
no openness
●Closed market
●No verification
possible by
third party
7. Open standards required!
Open Standards allow you the
flexibility to make the best choice
for your business
8. The Better Way : with open standards
The Standard defines the level
playing field
Open market
1:n relation
Implementations
can be verified
by third parties
9. What is an open standard?
A standard that is publicly available and has various rights to
use associated with it, and may also have various
properties of how it was designed (e.g. open process).
Benefits of open standards
● Application & platform independence
● Long-term access
● Architectural integrity
CHOICE!!!!
11. No Lock-In on where
- On-Premise, Hosted, Hybrid
● Cloud should provide flexibility in where
applications can run
● Hosted Cloud
● Needs Secure, Fine-grained, Multi-tenancy
● On-Premise Cloud
● Should run on choice of Hypervisors
● Hybrid-Cloud
● Leverage benefits of scale when needed
OpenStack
Amazon
vSphere
RedHat
Enterprise
Virtualization
12. No Lock-Out on Operational Model
● You have real-world restrictions that impact Cloud
● Governance, Compliance, Ent. Arch Standards, ITIL, Security, etc.
● Your Cloud must support different Models
13. Benefits of No Lock-In
o Productivity
• Let Developers work the way they want to work
o Agility
• Move and Scale applications to adapt to changing business conditions
o Survivability
• Minimize the impact of hosting providers
o Accountability
• Control Costs
14. Insist on Open
o Open Source
o Open Standards
o Open APIs
15. Open Hybrid Cloud
OPEN STANDARDS
Private Cloud
(Customer Datacenter)
Public Cloud
(Amazon, Rackspace, Google,
etc.)
Hybrid Cloud
Fact: All customer & service provider data centers have
HETEROGENOUS technology from MULTIPLE vendors
16. Open Platform
● Open Standards are essential for the success of the Open
Hybrid Cloud.
● Open Standards form the links between the Datacenter, Private
Cloud, and Public Cloud.
● Open Standards are the DNA of Red Hat and JBoss.
● Adopt Open Standards whenever possible.
● Create new technology and drive to standards when possible.
17. Recommendations for an open cloud
● (open) Standards for interoperability between all Key Reference Points
● Modular approach that offers fair competition, regardless of development
model and license
● Reusability is best when the interfaces are stable and the upstream
projects have proven to be sustainable
● Not all reference points can be standardised in this way
● Identify gaps, work with vendor/community ecosystem, move forward
● Identify Lock-In as risk on all Key Reference Points
● Closed APIs prohibit choice and Open Source participation
● Drive up cost
● Complicate interoperabilty
18. The UK Government already gets it...

19. Though I prefer this headline!
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/07/23/uk_government_officially_adopts_open_document_format/
23. Goals of the Red Hat model
● Bring Open Source Software to the enterprise
● Catalyst of Open Source Communities
● Faster technology innovation
● Open Standards
● Better quality
● Better price/performance
● Alignment to customer needs
