Common formative assessments developed collaboratively by teachers can provide important insights into student learning when used to inform instruction. While teachers may initially feel anxious about common assessments due to fears of exposure, focusing on using assessment results to help all students improve and keeping individual results private can help alleviate fears. School leaders should support teachers by providing time, resources and training to collaborate in developing and analyzing effective common assessments.
