The report examines the steep and historic expansion of U.S. health engagement in Africa, principally through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), in the past decade. This dramatic shift in U.S. foreign assistance—spurred by the “exceptionalism” of HIV/AIDS—has rested on a consensus that substantial U.S. investments in health in Africa do indeed advance U.S. interests. They fulfill American humanitarian values by saving and enhancing lives; they strengthen health security against common and emerging threats; and they promote the stability and long-term development of vulnerable communities in low-income countries. Despite the achievements of U.S. global health programs over the past decade, challenges remain.
Officials dispatched thousands of police, firefighters, soldiers and government officials to search for survivors in an effort to keep loss of life as low as possible. Rescue efforts were hampered by landslides and roads which had already been closed as the result of heavy rain.

Sandy, 2012’s ninth hurricane, became a huge storm with wind and rain bands reaching out 500 km or more from the storm center, produced 15-50 cm of rain and flooding in Jamaica, Bermuda, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Cuba, New Jersey, and New York
Every day the civilians of Syria are paying the price as the crisis deepens. Ordinary men, women and children continue to be caught up in the violence and have few alternatives as to where to seek refuge. On 4 December, nine children and a teacher were reportedly killed when a school in Wafideen, north-east of Damascus, was hit by mortar fire. On 26 November, ten children were killed in Deir al Asafir, east of Damascus, as bombs hit a playground. The UN continues to call for respect of international humanitarian law to protect civilians in conflict. Many children have been unable to attend school for the past 18 months, due to on-going violence and insecurity. School attendance is very low in some governorates. In Aleppo for example, where fighting has been relentless over recent months, an estimated 14 per cent of children are able to go to school, according to the Minister of Education. Children who have been internally displaced are most at risk of dropping out or missing school. School enrolment among children in collective shelters varies and many children are reported to have dropped out due to insecurity and complications related to displacement
