SEMINAR ON
CARDIOPULMONERY
RESUSCITATION
PRESENTED BY
SANTOSH SINGH
1st Yr M.sc.
HISTORICAL REVEIW
 5000- First artificial mouth to mouth respiration
 3000 BC – Ventilation
 1780-First attempt of newborn resusitation by blowing
 1874- first experimental cardiac massage
 1901-first sucessful diract cardiac massage in man
 1960- indiract cardiac massage.
 1980- development of cardiopulmonery resuscitation due
to the work of peter safar.
INTRODUCTION
 Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a life
saving technique useful in many emergancies,
including heart attach or near drowning, in which
someones’s breathing or heartbeat has stopped.
ANOTOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY
DEFINATION
 CARDIO PULMONARY RESUSCITATION
means cardiac and pulmonary .cardio means heart
and pulmonary means lungs and resuscitation
means to restore. so cardio pulmonary
resuscitation means to restore heart and lung
function
CONT…
 Cardio pulmonary resuscitation is a technique of
basic life support for the purpose of oxygenating
the brain and heart until appropriate, definitive
medical treatment can restore normal heart and
ventilatory action
PURPOSES
 To maintain an open and clear airway(A)
 To oxygenate the heart and lungs.
 To restore the function of heart and lungs.
 To prevent the brain death and damage.
 To maintain circulation in brain and heart.
 To save life of the patient
CONT……
 To maintain breathing by external ventilation (B)
 To maintain blood circulation by external cardiac
massages (C)
INDICATION:-
 Cardiac arrest
 VENTRICULAR FIBRILATION (VF)
 VENTRICULAR TACHYCARDIA (VT)
 ASYSTOLE
 PULSE LESS ELECTRICAL ACTIVITY
SIGN & SYMPTOMS OF
CARDIAC ARREST
Collapse
No Pulse
No
Breathing
CONT.....
Loss Of
Consciousness
Fatigue
Vomiting
RESPIRATORY ARREST
 Drowning
 Stroke
 Foreign body in throat
 Smoke inhalation
 Drug overdose
 Suffocation
 Coma
 Epiglottis paralysis.
PRINCIPALS OF CPR
 To restore effactive circulation and ventilation.
To prevent irreversible cerebral damage due to anoxia.
When the heart fails to maintain the cerebral
circulation for approximately four minutes the brain
may suffer irreversible damage.

MEDICAL MANAGEMENT
ADRENALINE
 Adrenaline (epinephrine) is the main drug used during
resuscitation from cardiac arrest.
 ATROPIN
atropin as a single dose of 3mg is sufficient to block
vagal tone completely and should be used once of
asystole.
AMIDORONE
It is antiarrhythimic drug.
NURSING MANAGEMENT
 ASSIST THE INTUBATIO AND SECURING
ETT
 ASSIST WITH ONGOING MANAGEMENT OF
AIRWAY PATENCY AND ADEQUATE
VENTILATION.
 PREPARE AND ADMINISTER IV FLUID.
 IF CPR IS IN PROGRESS ,PREPARE AND
IDEPENDENTLY DOUBLE CHEAK AND
LABEL 3 DOSES OF ADRENALINE
 DOCUMENT MEDICATION ADMINISTERD (
INCLUDING TIME)
ANY DOUBT
SUMMERIZATION
