Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

3. CONNECTIVITY
Rail volumes currently represent 28% of inland throughput and continue to grow at
around 7% per annum. The new North Rail Terminal added 9 extra 730m long
tracks at the port, bringing the total number to 20 – more than at London’s Kings
Cross Station.
In fact, since 2002 The Port of Felixstowe has doubled rail throughput and is now
Britain’s biggest rail container terminal.
The A14 was built specifically to link Felixstowe to the national motorway
network at the junction with the M1 and M6, opening up access to the
Midlands and the North. This key logistics corridor is now being substantially
upgraded and its junction with the two motorways completely redesigned to
reduce journey times between Felixstowe and key markets. To the South, the
A12 links Felixstowe with the M25 and the rest of the South-East.
The Port of Felixstowe is connected to the world by 33 shipping lines operating
over 90 services a week across all continents – offering unparalleled flexibility and
choice to its customers. There are 24 weekly services to Europe, 38 to Asia, 7 to the
Middle East, 7 to Africa and 17 to the Americas.
The Port of Felixstowe offers the most frequent and widest range
of carbon efficient coastal feeder services to other east coast,
Scottish and Irish ports.

A berth is a designated location in a port or harbour used for mooring vessels when they are not at sea. OR
A ship's allotted place at a wharf or dock
• opening of Berths 8&9 in 2011 Area- 47.4 Ha
• Berths 8&9 were the first UK berths to handle the world’s largest
container ship, the 19,224 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) mega
vessel, the MSC Oscar.
• Berths 8&9 have already been equipped with the largest ship-to-shore
cranes of their type anywhere in the world.
• In Phase 1 of the development-
1. 22 rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs). (22x40) with Stack capacity -
44,000 TEU
2. Designed to the latest standards, these ‘eco’ RTGs have significantly lower
emission levels and use up to 40% less fuel than standard machines,
helping to make Berths 8&9 the lowest-carbon container terminal in the
UK.
3. Current Length of quay- 920m; after development length of quay 1285 m.
4. 2 deep-sea container berths- 16m below chart datum; after development
18 m below chart datum.
5. Fork park- 5 x 5 high stacking container forklifts
6. With an outreach of 62 metres, -12 Quayside cranes-12 x 24 containers
wide (Each crane weighs approximately 2,000 tonnes and is able to lift
two containers simultaneously, up to a total of 70 tonnes.)
15. The table below provides a guide to the dimensions that can
generally be handled without the need for further inquiries.
Cargoes falling outside these dimensions require further
information to be supplied, (e.g. lifting point positions, lift plans
and photographs) to enable a more bespoke service for the
customer.
SAFE WORKING LIMITS
The information below shows the safe working envelopes of our
ship-to-shore cranes. Heavy lift mode increases the Safe Working
Limits (SWL) of the crane, but it will restrict the outreach over the
vessel – this needs to be considered during the planning process.
Another key piece of information is the planned stowage position
for consignment, which will determine how to proceed with
lashing and securing cargo safely onboard.
CARGO HANDLING
16. • Port of Felixstowe provides a Container Weighing solution to help shippers
meet updated SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) regulations.
• The Port of Felixstowe was the first to announce that it will offer container
weighing services, to ensure UK shippers are able to comply with the new
international regulations.
• Since 1st of July 2016 every laden export container has been required to
have a verified weight before being loaded onto a vessel.

17. EXAMINATION FACILITIES
The Port of Felixstowe has invested in the creation of two purpose-built BCP areas to enable specialist inspections to take place – the Temperature
Controlled Examination Facility (TCEF) and the Ambient Temperature Examination Facility (ATEF).
The examination area also allows the presentation of containers to a state-of-the-art X-Ray scanning machine, based permanently on the port and
controlled by UK Border Force.
• TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED EXAMINATION FACILITY (TCEF)
The examinations undertaken in the TCEF are usually of products of animal origin, and are predominantly called for by the Port Health Authority.
The TCEF is divided into two inspection areas. The first of these is a five-bay facility, used to examine cargoes for human consumption – largely fish
and chicken. The other area has two bays, and is used for the inspection of cargoes not for human consumption, such as fishmeal and pet food.
• AMBIENT TEMPERATURE EXAMINATION FACILITY (ATEF)
The Port’s designated ATEF is housed within a large warehouse known as 70 Shed. It is split into multiple specific bays (6 bays - Animal Origin
Food Facility, 3 bays - Micro Examination Food Facility, 7 bays - General Food Facility and 4 bays - Allergen Facility) and facilitates the
examination of products of animal origin, such as canned tuna, gelatine and corned beef, as well as examination of foodstuffs not of animal origin, such
as nuts and fruit.
For hygiene purposes and to prevent cross-contamination, all areas within both the TCEF and the ATEF are kept entirely separate from each other, with
each area designated its own equipment.
