The New Package
There is a new package of instructional materials for teaching and learning
English as a second language in the schools of Kerala. They have been prepared
under the initiative and supervision of the SCERT, Kerala with the involvement
of educationalexperts and experienced teachers.
There are 5 books in the package.

curriculumdesignedforaparticularsubjectclassandagegroup.

totheacceptedapproachesandprinciples.

STRUCTURE
The structurecan be classified into two, with respect to contentand
form.
▪ Contentrefers to what relevant matters should be incorporatedin the
text
▪ The form refers to the layout sequencing, quality of paper and print,
size, attractiveness, etc.
Text books can be structural,Notional-functional or Task based
conforming to the approach of the curriculum
CHARACTERISTICS/ QUALITIES
֍ It is helpful to the teacherand the student to realize the prescribed vocabulary
and structures
֍ The vocabulary and structuresare selected and graded according to the
principlesfrom easy to difficult, from simple to complex and from familiar to
unfamiliar.
֍ It gives scope for revising earlier vocabulary and structuresand also to affirm
passive vocabulary.
֍ It containsdifferent language forms. Prose and poetry are preferably in the
ratio 2:1
֍ The selected materials are interestingand value based
֍ Functional aspects are given priority
֍ There is scope for sufficient exercises, with clear instructionsto promote
communicative skills- oral and written
֍ Illustrationsrelevant to the contexts are given wherever necessary, as
fascinating as possible to the students
֍ The subject matter is suitableto the age level of the students
֍ There is enough scope for interesting and worthwhileactivities
֍ It enablesto develop the language skills in a balanced way

֍ It has a companion Hand Book( Source Book) for the teacher and a Practice
