Counseling
 Counseling is the process of two-way communication
by which the counselor assists the individual/client to
make decision about his/her own choice .
Techniques of counseling
(i) Building rapport:
• Establishment of such relations will help to gain
confidence, trust and mutual understanding that help
to keep client at ease and help to exchange ideas,
feelings, experiences at maximum level.
(ii) Identifying needs or problems of an individual:
• Counselor must speak politely, clearly, listen to,
exchange ideas and help in identifying the problems
of the clients.
(iii) Finding ways to solve the problems:
• The counselor should help the client in finding ways
and means to solve his/her problems by encouraging
in discussion and develop problem-solving strategies
based on situation.

(iv) Maintaining patience:
A counselor should have patience while giving
information, listening to the clients' ideas and
guiding to help him, identifying the problems
and help to solve it by necessary actions.
(v) Keeping secret:
Counselor should maintain confidence in
keeping sensible personal matter secret during
counseling.
Qualities of a counselor
A counselor must be;
 Friendly, sincere, cooperative and social.
 Capacity of judging things closely and in detail.
 Patience to listen and to deal problem with respect to
his client
 Calm behaviour and unrushed manner.
 Possess skills of communication and monitoring the
progress of counseling.
 Assure confidentiality concerning the client's
information.
 Ability to minimize the pain, address the anxiety and
ability to convince individual for taking necessary
action to solve their problems.
Advantage of counseling
• It is helpful in dealing with individual and motivate to
take necessary action to solve problems.
• Provides maximum opportunity for feedback.
• Helps to maintain two - way communication.
• Illiterate people can by taught be this method.
• Easy to make follow-up studies on the basis of
counseling records.
Limitations of counseling
i. Counseling takes long period of time.
ii. It is difficult to cover wide range of people
through counseling method.
