The new ISO 45001:2018 standard for Occupational health and safety is now an ISO standard unlike previous version OHSAS 18001 standard. Its core text remains similar to ISO 9001:2015 standard and other ISO standards having 10 clauses.
The new Occupational Health Standard is coming out soon. ISO 45001 will bring more attention to the health of employees and their safety. This webinar gives you a detailed description of what is coming and it explains how ISO 45001 is related to ISO 9001. ISO 45001 has been planned to line up with ISO 9001 that was updated in 2015. ISO 45001 is the world’s international standard for occupational health and safety, issued to protect employees and visitors from work-related accidents and diseases. ISO 45001 certification was developed to mitigate any factors that can cause employees and businesses irreparable harm.
Its standards are the result of great effort by a committee of health and safety management experts who looked closely at a number of other approaches to system management — including ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. In addition, ISO 45001 was designed to take other existing occupational health and safety standards, such as OHSAS 18001, into account — as well as the ILO’s labor standards, conventions and safety guidelines.
This implementation guide will help you run through the benefits, PDCA Cycle, Annex SL structure in detail for implementing ISO 45001.

NOSA’s very own Head of Innovation, Dr Deonie Botha, deliberated the fact that the business environment is complex in nature and that organisations need to function like complex adaptive systems to be robust and ensure long-term sustainability. ISO 45001 emphasises a multitude of technical and non-technical factors, which organisations need to manage in order to ensure compliance. However, Deonie also highlighted how it will also serve as a tool to assist organisations in being robust and ensuring sustainability.

IQ Academy Lunch & Learn Webinar | ISO 45001 - Our Implementation Experience ...IQ_UK
Over 7,600 people die each day from work-related accidents or diseases - that’s over 2.78 million every year. The burden of occupational injuries and diseases is significant, both for employers and the wider economy, resulting in losses from early retirements, staff absence and rising insurance premiums.
To combat the problem, ISO has developed a new standard, ISO 45001, occupational health and safety management systems, that will help organisations reduce this burden by providing a framework to improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks and create better, safer working conditions, all over the world.
Our IQ Academy webinar for March welcomed Wayne Darwin of Tarmac, Senior HSE Manager responsible for assurance and governance to provide an insight into the implementation experience of ISO 45001. Wayne has previously held operational and SHEQ roles with Hanson and Babcock and is currently involved in a project team implementing ISO 45001 across the Tarmac business.
During the bitesize lunch & learn session Wayne takes us through what ISO 45001 is, its benefits and purpose, his experience and approach to implementing the standard along with the opportunities and learning outcomes that have arisen from this.

The new standard is designed to help organisations around the world ensure the health and safety of the people who make their business possible.
This standard is set to replace the popular OHSAS 18001 standard, with the overall purpose remaining the improvement of occupational health and safety performance. ISO 45001 will more easily integrate with other ISO Management Systems standards including ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015.
ISO 45001 will require an organization to look beyond its immediate health and safety issues and take into account what the wider society expects of it. Organisations will have to think about their contractors and suppliers, as well as the effects their activities have on neighbouring communities.
As globalisation and global trade continue to escalate, organisations’ stakeholders are expecting organisations to be ethical in every aspect of their business, especially in the way they treat employees. ISO 45001 will give organisations an internationally recognised occupational health and safety standard to follow. This standard provides the specification for formal, systematic analysis and management of risk, management of regulatory compliance, promotion of safer work practices, and evaluation of occupational health and safety performance. This systematic approach facilitates a decrease in the number of incidents and ultimately less disruption to business.
In order to comply with international needs and requirements, more than 50 countries and organisations including the International Labour Organization (ILO) have been involved in the creation of ISO 45001. The aim is to provide a tool that can be used by any organisation, in any industry, anywhere in the world.
Organisations currently certified to OHSAS 18001, can remain so through the transition period offered after the publication of the ISO 45001 standard.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

13. CERTIFICATION
OHSAS 18001 CERTIFICATION PROCESS
Health and safety at work is an issue that affects every single business and organization – for
example economically. In an increasingly competitive globalized economy a business cannot
afford to lose time through workplace accidents or have its production processes interrupted.
Accidents at work not only cost money, they are also bad for a company’s image.
Last but not least, national and international legislation requires proof of compliance with
occupational health and safety rules and regulations. OHSAS 18001 is an international standard
for occupational health and safety (OHSAS). It helps businesses and organizations to spot any
potential risks or hazards, minimize the possibility of their occurrence and introduce measures
for continual improvement.
14. BENEFITS OF CERTIFICATION
The benefits you can enjoy when your business or organization is certified to OHSAS 18001
include:
• Chance to minimize the number of occupational accidents
• Enhanced profitability through less time lost and improved processes
• Proof of compliance with national and international OHSAS Legislation
• Chance to continually improve your own OHSAS management system
• More motivated employees through a safer work environment
• Improved health and safety reputation, e.g. among stakeholders, business partners, public
authorities, pressure groups, investors, etc.
• Possibility of more favourable ratings by insurance companies
• Smooth integration into existing quality or environmental management systems
