It takes two
Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields became best friends during their
dermatology residency at Stanford University School of Medicine, where
they heard a compelling message from their mentor, the Chairman of the
dermatology department: find your purpose and make a difference or be
confined to a practice that’s ordinary. The Doctors interpreted this message
as an imperative: go forth and change the rules. And when it came to
changing the rules, they totally changed the game.

The practice of dermatology takes
place in a dermatologist’s office.
Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields recognized that dermatologist treatment for common skin concerns was
unavailable to most people. The Doctors also observed how skin concerns can make people feel less
confident, more self-conscious and generally less happy than those with clear complexions. Even
people with access to dermatologists were hesitant to schedule an appointment, believing their action
reflected vanity rather than an investment in personal care and well-being.

With a passion for solving common skin concerns deemed “not serious enough for medical prime time,”
the Doctors went first into their laboratories and then into the home. By developing a comprehensive
medicine-based treatment available without a prescription, and by boldly stepping out of the clinic and
onto television screens, Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields reached millions with an effective solution for mild to
moderate acne. In doing so, they transformed the lives of millions, revolutionized acne treatment, and
created an unprecedented success by connecting with people on a very personal level.

the credibility of their skincare products to department stores. Even as a top-tier brand, the Doctors’

products were kept under glass.

While in retail, the Doctors discovered that their success came predominantly through “word of mouth”
from satisfied customers. In a bold move, Rodan + Fields became the first prestige skincare line to exit
the department stores and enter the world of direct selling. Through direct selling, the Doctors can
