Mary Oliver Twist Essay
Introduction
Prostitution looms large in the Victorian consciousness. The image of the fallen woman reflects the
Victorian upper classes ideas about sexuality, gender and class. The prostitute is a staple of 19th
century fiction. Debate about prostitution is also a reflection of cultural anxiety about urbanization.
Victorian ideas about fallenness create the ideological assumptions behind the creation of the
Contagious Diseases Acts. Through the control of sexuality, the Acts reinforced existing patterns of
class and gender domination. They reflected an acceptance of male sexual license. The double
standard allowed male access to fallen women and punished only the women.
Fallenness as Literary Motif
In Oliver Twist, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cultural beliefs about the fallen woman necessitated that she be victim of a sacrificial death. While her
death may have seemed shocking to us, there is no other way that Dickens could have told her story.
Nancy is lost beyond redemption and although she had a heart of gold, her fallenness necessitates her
death. To have redeemed her would have justified prostitution, or at least acknowledged the fact that it
could be a temporary state, and not the road to ruin and a horrible and lonely death.
Oliver s mother is also a fallen woman who meets a sacrificial death although her heart is apparently
good. Her entire family is also consequently ruined. This reads as particularly tragic since she was not
seduced by a rake, but by someone who intended to marry her. No matter; she also had to be sacrificed
to fallenness, along with her entire family. It is a cautionary tale.
There are two examples of fallenness in Mary Barton. One is Mary Barton herself, who is seduced by
dreams of improving her social status via the upper class Carson. Her lust for wealth leaves her at the
mercy of this rake, who has no intention of marrying her anyway.
The true fallen woman is Mary s aunt Esther. She is destined for the street by her love of clothing,
finery, and her class aspirations. When John Barton encounters her on the street again she is the
epitome of the streetwalker, bereft of dignity, morality, and the possibility of salvation.
Both Oliver Twist an Mary Barton

Analysis Of A Doll s House
A Doll s House is a famous three act play based in the mid/late 1800s. Written by author Henrik Ibsen,
the play focused on the changing times for women of Norway (Ibsen, H, 1992). Throughout the play
the typical early 1800s Norwegian family is described one where the husband is dominant in all
aspects, and the wife merely follows his requests and tends to the children (M., M., M., A., n.d.). From
the beginning of the play to the end, main character Nora gradually hints toward being so unhappy
with her situation that she would eventually go against social norms and leave her husband and
children to make a life for herself (Ibsen, H, 1992). A Doll s House incorporated several new concepts
for that time period such as prose and realism all while employing the themes and structures of a
classical tragedy. A Doll s House is so unique because it was one of the first plays to be written in
prose. Merriam Webster s definition of prose is, a literary medium distinguished from poetry
especially by its greater irregularity and variety of rhythm and its closer correspondence to the patterns
of everyday speech (Prose., n.d.). Similarly, prose is simply everyday talk. Most plays were not
written in this relatable way that we are used to now. For example, in that time it was uncommon for a
play to have phrases like, I am in a silly mood today, as Nora stated (Ibsen, H, 1992). A Doll s House s
English was more dumbed down than other plays in that time period, which were all

Comparing The Matrix And Plato s Allegory The Cave
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one , Albert Einstein. This quote from Einstein
touches on how reality is not something that one can fully grasp without questioning the reality that
you are in presently and both Plato and the Matrix address through their work. In Plato s Allegory of
the Cave, he discusses how society controls information so that the people know only what they need
to know and nothing more. In the Matrix they show how society has used the control of information to
create an illusion of a dreamworld as Morpheus calls it, to crete a false sense of security and
happiness. This illusion was supposed to keep the people satisfied so that the citizens would not want
to question what was going on and dig ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Which in society you have the choice to question society and look deeper into society and find all the
information that has been kept from you. This control of information is used to hide the information
that the government does not want to be common information or information that has been
misconstrued to uphold their dreamworld that they have created to keep the people happy. Or you can
just accept everything as you believe it to be and continue living in the dreamworld that was created
for you to live in. The next similarity is when Neal is in a womb like container and he had numerous
tubes connected to him, all of these tubes symbolize our need for and ties to society. As an individual
we are tied to society through the necessities of life such as; clothing, housing, food, and jobs, and
through these same aspects we are contributing to society so it creates a cycle of dependency. We are
dependent because we are unable to create most of these things by ourselves without the help of
society. for example to build a house in order to get wood or lumber to build it you would need
someone to manufacture it so that you would have boards for siding and roofing, and beams and
boards for walls and supports. This one necessity is just an example of our dependency on society as
an individual. Since we are so dependent on society that corporations know that they can exploit us
without us knowing it. An example of this from the matrix would be when Morpheus is apologizing to
Neal for having to retrain his mind and he tells him it had to be done, I had no choice. He is talking
about how Neal is seen to be the Chosen one and so Morpheus felt like he had no choice but to make
Neal retrain his mind even though he is technically too old

Essay On Nigga
Nigger. A word formed from the Spanish word niger and negro , meaning black. A word that was often
used as a racial slur and insults against black people. This word has been used in a derogatory way
since the 1800s. It is a term of exclusion and a verbal justification for discrimination. Nowadays in the
21st century, people use the slang word nigga which stems from nigger. Over the years there has been
some controversy about who should be allowed to say the slang word nigga. The connection between
The Fire This Time and this topic is in Carol Anderson s excerpt from her book, White Rage, Ronald
Reagan s key political strategist, Lee Atwater says, You start out in 1954 by saying Nigger, nigger,
nigger By 1968 you can t say nigger ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This topic has always been a question people have asked, there is not completely correct answer. Even
if there was people would still continue using the word. Anyone who saying nigga should care about if
they re allowed to say that word because they should know how the word originated. The first
viewpoint is non black people should not be allowed to say nigga because it s racist. Yes, black people
do say it casually doesn t mean everyone has that same privilege. For example, Sen. Ben Sasse
appeared on HBO s Real Time with Bill Maher to promote his new book, he also invited Maher to
visit Nebraska after they talked about how adults in California still dress up for Halloween. We d love
to have you work in the fields with us, the senator said to Maher. Work in the fields? Senator, I am a
house nigga (Stern). There was a mixture of reactions but Ice Cube was quick to come onto the show
to let his opinion be known.
There s a lot of guys out there who cross the line because they a little too familiar. Guys that, you
know, might have a black girlfriend or two that made them Kool Aid every now and then, and they
think they can cross the line. And they can t. There s nothing that a white person can accomplish that
makes them become Black. Blackness cannot be earned like a Boy Scout badge. And people who
think they have a pass use it only to access the fun and joyful side of Black culture (Stern).

Compare And Contrast Roots And The Life Of Frederick Douglass
Imagine being stuck in chains for six months in your own filth and waste. For some slaves on the
middle passage it was exactly like that. This, however, was different than slaves born into slavery, for
they didn t have to go through that harsh journey. Both were common to try and escape, few making
it. Making the outcomes of Frederick Douglass, who wrote an autobiography, and Kunta Kinte, from
the movie Roots, different. While Roots and the narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass have some
similarities, the differences of their origins and outcomes are more significant because that s what
shaped them who they are. One difference of the book and movie is how they started out becoming a
slave. Kunta was a normal boy, just becoming a man in his tribe, when he was taken prisoner.
Frederick s mom was a slave so he was just born into it, skipping the terrible middle passage. Kunta
had it real hard on his journey and even a man died right next to him. They tried to break free and
almost succeeded before a canon filled with shrapnel was blasted at them. ... Show more content on

Bowling For Columbine Documentary Essay
Documentary reflection
The assignment task for Term two was for a small group of people (three), to create a documentary
and then each person to write a reflection. Before starting this documentary, we studied the history and
development of documentaries. We then looked more into how different documentaries, Spellbound
(objective) and Bowling for Columbine (subjective), how each separate style was created and made
and how each different style affected people.
We ran into conflict when we were choosing what topic for our documentary. We all had many ideas
but most of them we had to rule out because they would not be suitable for Year 5 and 6. The target
audience only left us a few ideas. This is because when we first started off thinking ... Show more

We added some funny videos to please the target audience.
We interviewed most of or interviewees in a classroom. The reason why we choose this area is that
because when a student is at school, they are constantly in a classroom. So soon enough many feel
more comfortable in a classroom than other places. We interviewed some grade tens were their bags
are. We assumed they would be more honest if they were interviewed somewhere that was familiar
and in a sense comforting because if they feel comfortable, they would normally be more truthful. We
chose to do a mid shot because when most people are nervous, they tend to move their feet and we
didn t want to show them nervous to be interviewed. We also used different camera angles to show
different people. Some were smaller, so we lowered the angle and where the camera was positioned.
From watching Bowling for Columbine and Spellbound , we decided to choose a subjective
documentary because we were all more interested in Bowling for Columbine than Spellbound . When
editing we looked at what Bowling for Columbine did with editing things together and things out to
get what our point across more affected.
When working in a group, we found it hard to balance out the roles, but I think we did. I was the
editor and camera person which is a great duo because I imagined what I wanted to do with the
filming and just had to ask

El Niño Vs La Niña
El Niño and La Niña are opposite effects of the same phenomenon. They both cause changes in the
temperatures between the atmosphere and the Pacific region. El Niño is caused by a change in the
wind patterns. The Pacific trade winds go from east to west and the warm ocean water go the opposite
direction. Normally the two forces creates a balance in the middle. When the Pacific trade winds are
weaker than usual, the warm ocean water rushes to the east and collides with the the west coast of the
coastal cities at the east of the Pacific. This causes the average ocean temperature to be much warmer.
La Niña is effectively the opposite of El Niño. When the Pacific trade winds are stronger than usual,
the warm ocean water is pushed further back to the west. This causes the ... Show more content on

The Importance Of Perpetual Optimism
Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier (Oren, 1996). Optimism has played a major role throughout
my career. Optimism has gotten me through some very tough times. I don t know where I would be
without being optimistic. My way of thinking caused those around me to think and act the same way.
During times of duress such as conducting field training exercises, my Soldiers notice when I think
about the better things to get us through it. There has been several times when missions has caused a
higher stress level than normal. As leaders we have to find ways to get out of difficult times. Instead of
complaining I always try to find ways think about the outcome of the situation. I always think how the
situation could always be worst. When I let those around me the situation can always be worst , they
always tend to agree with me. I look forward to the challenging times because the challenging times
make us stronger. Optimism also pertains to life outside the Army. I m a true believer in looking at
things in a positive way. Every time I am put in situations where the odds may be against me,
optimism is my best friend. Optimism never seems to fail me. With my optimism comes others to
perform better and look at things a different way. I can truly say my life is surrounded with optimism.
Everything that comes up usually causes me to be optimistic.
Have fun in your command. Don t always run at a breakneck pace. Take leave when you ve earned it.
Spend time with your families.

Goldman Sachs Case Study
1. Why Goldman Sachs Needs a Systematic Approach
Historically, Goldman Sachs (GS) has been known for its high end performance and reputation as one
of the top investment banking firms in the U.S. Placing its customers interests as the first business
principle (Groysberg and Snook, 2005, p. 16), GS takes pride in the high quality work and heavy
teamwork culture in order to execute the best in class financial services. As a small firm, GS relies on
its apprenticeship model, where a new manager will informally learn the job and leadership from an
experienced leader (Groysberg and Snook, 2005, p. 7). However, the booming of financial service
opportunities, the introduction of the High Tech industry, and the global expansion of the firms in the
1990s reveals that there is a discrepancy in GS s mentorship model and the business goals of the firm.
Consequently, GS should consider supplementing the current training method with a more systematic
approach to leadership development to prepare its leaders for the changing business contexts.
1.1 Competitive Investment Banking Service
From 1990 to 1999, the continuous bull market and the Initial Public Offering (IPO) of many private
firms promote the growth of investment banking business. Since the larger resources mean higher
competitiveness for the banks (Groysberg and Snook, 2005, p. 2), many financial service firms are
consolidating to increase their competitive advantages. GS s reputation requires the company to

Treatment Of Patients With Renal Failure
Every year more and more patients are diagnosed with renal failure. In hemodialysis the amount of
dialysis each patient receives is less, compared to at home dialysis and nocturnal dialysis treatments.
Kidneys are important organs for survival. Humans cannot filter harmful wastes, fluids, salts,
potassium, and phosphorus without kidneys. When diagnosed with renal failure a patient relies on a
dialysis machine to adequately remove the harmful wastes from their blood. One of the main ongoing
battles between dialysis patients and their providers is adequate fluid control. There are

from a coma, after being on hemodialysis for 11 hours. With all the new advancements today,
successful outcomes should be the first thing doctors think of, rather than, focusing on the number of
patients nephrology can schedule in. Lupus is another concern that nephrology faces which affect all
races and has made it more of a challenge for doctors throughout the years. In most cases, patients
with end stage renal disease and lupus get separated from the other patients because they are classified

this is true only when doctors are unable to stabilize systemic lupus. This should not be a debatable

Database Xml And Resource Description Framework ( Rdf )
A triplestore is a non relational database that stores and retrieves triples using semantic queries.
Triples store data and are imported and exported using the Resource Description Framework (RDF). A
triple is a data entity comprising three components a subject, predicate and object that describe a set of
data such as We have shoes . The subject is We , the predicate is have and the object is shoes . Triples
provide an easy and flexible way of modeling data that is similar to how the human brain functions.
Triples have a semantic structure that can easily represent connections between structured data and
free flowing text. Triples form interconnected data networks (graphs), which are easy to read and can
represent complex data structures.
Information is stored in a triplestore and retrieved using a database query language called SPARQL.
SPARQL is a query language for RDF data. It is a basic method for querying remote databases over
HTTP. SPARQL can perform graph pattern matching queries and allows users to specify types of
accessibility and navigational queries (the shortest distance between two nodes or how two nodes are
connected) in triplestores. SPARQL generates powerful queries and reasons intuitively on the data in a
triplestore. This also allows computers to reason intuitively on data.
The information in triplestores can be stored, accessed and manipulated much easier versus using a
relational database exponentially expanding data management and storage

Skilled Immigration Controversy
The discourse on skilled immigration revolves around the controversial H 1B worker visas, the largest
visa program for temporary, skilled immigration to the United States, and the level of the annual cap
of such visas. Proponents pushing to raise the annual visa cap, argue that there exists a shortage of
domestic labor supply in certain industries. Moreover, these workers enable firms to compete globally
by raising their competitiveness, growth, and innovation. Critics of skilled immigration, however,
argue that skilled immigrants are not necessarily skilled, and that the principle use of the H 1B visas is
for firms to minimize their labor costs, which has the effect of undercutting native wages, and
displacing native workers.
The H 1B program grants temporary work visas to workers in specialty occupations, most commonly
in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Firms must pay substantial fees to
apply for a worker, and the worker is tied to the firm for the length of their visa (the initial length
being three years). Law requires that H 1B workers be paid the prevailing wage for the job in the firm
or the geographic region where the person is employed as to discourage worker ... Show more content

The question of whether there is a shortage of skilled labor supply cannot be accurately determined
given the current visa system and the agendas of firms. Since applications of the visas are not accepted

incentivized to hire skilled immigrants to minimize costs rather than the claimed performance
benefits, biasing any data collected. Whether aggregate benefits outweigh the potential losses from the
crowding out of native workers and their lower wages depend on the methodologies

Stephen King s Insight On Dreams
Stephen King s insight on dreams are all based on personal experiences. King begins by comparing
the functionality of a dream to a mirror I ve always used dreams the way you d use a mirror to look at
something you couldn t see head on . By using this idea of dreams being like mirrors, King is able to
alleviate his writer s block by depicting his dreams directly onto paper. An example would be when
King had already written seven to eight hundred pages of his novel which he could not seem to finish.
Then later reveals how a nightmare provoked the ending, he states how he woke up frightened yet at
the same time relieved he d finished the book. According to King all he had to do at this point was to
take his dream and transfer it to paper. Without a doubt, King s personal experiences can justify why
he believes dreams are a way that people s minds illustrate the nature of their problems. Or maybe
even illustrates the answer to their problem in symbolic language .
After reading Stephen King s essay, it is easy to conclude that his dreams are extremely valuable to his
writing. King makes it clear that he has a consistent writing habit, but an unpredictable though
process. King also believes that a strong writer can dream while awake. He illustrates many example
where he uses dreams to create or finish a novel or film. This approach is random and unpredictable.
An example of his approach would be when he was working on the Salems Lot. King explains how he
relied on a nightmare

Role Play Analysis
At one point in time, I hated role plays. You never know what to expect from one second to the next.
Feelings of anxiety and some nervousness always sprout up when I know there is a role play to
perform. Furthermore, the thought of acting, knowing it was not a real scenario is daunting.
Everybody would be staring at you, and this makes me slightly uncomfortable. Many thoughts raced
through my mind. For example, What if I said the wrong thing, what if I did the wrong thing; or what
if my acting skills were not up to par. Role playing made no sense to me because, in real life
situations, I knew it would be different. I would be able to respond accordingly, and not feel judged by
all of the eyes that were focused on me. As a result, my client in real life would benefit from our
therapeutic sessions. It is funny though, because once the role play in the class started, feelings of
calmness surrounded me. In addition, my game face was on, I was cool and collected. In part this can
be attributed to the calm atmosphere my classmates created, and also, the fact the professor met me

What Are Franklin Roosevelt s Three Programs
I think the top three programs that Franklin Roosevelt created as a part of the New Deal are the FDIC,
the WPA, and the NYA because keeping people s money safe and creating and appointing jobs is an
efficient way to keep your country safe from failure.
After the stock market crashed in 1929, Americans began to scramble to the banks to withdraw their
money. As a result, thousands of financial institutions failed. This became known as the Great
Depression. In 1933, President Roosevelt created the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, which
would insure deposits to a certain limit with money pooled by other banks. This not only meant that
people s money was safe, but it boosted the confidence of the citizens. Taking action against the bank

A breaking in water system under the Howard and Lombard Street intersection led to the street flood,

All the emergency response staff came within a few minutes once they noticed by the incident.
The difficulty was how to deal with two incidents at the same time, fire and spilling of hazardous

Good Will Hunting Theme
Good Will Hunting: A Film Analysis with Emphasis on
Finding One s Happiness
Sean reads a note from Will: Sean, if the Professor calls about that job, just tell him, sorry, I have to go
see about a girl. The film Good Will Hunting focuses on the story of a young man unsure of his future,
but discovering a direction through guidance of his psychologist, Sean Maguire. Will Hunting, the
protagonist of the classic film, has a gift for mathematics, however, Will is stuck between picking a
successful career or a relationship with his soul mate. Sant, the director the film, has previously
focused on themes such as homosexuality and social issues. This is relevant because, Gus Van Sant s
film, Good Will Hunting, exemplifies the process of discovering ... Show more content on

Throughout the film obstacles and conflicts define the characters and help the viewer outline the
theme in the movie. For example, the first obstacle Hunting faced was getting arrested. This happened
as a result of assaulting an officer who was trying to separate a fight between Will and a bully he knew
years back. This is when Lambeau offers Will an opportunity to overcome the obstacle. Lambeau
acted as a supervisor while Will was on probation, therefore offering Will to study mathematics and
see a psychotherapist to overcome his issues. This portion of the film states that, although Will was an
intelligent young man, his aggressive behavior was affecting his life. Obviously, this shows Gus Van
Sant s intentions of showing the character s ability to grow and find a place in the world. According to
Moura, ...regardless o what you call it, your film will always have a moral and a message. (Moura)

Tension, Humor, And Foreshadowing In The Martian By Andy Weir
Tension, humor, and foreshadowing are some examples of elements that readers will find in The
Martian. In The Martian, astronaut Mark Watney is left behind on Mars. Because of a dust storm,
Mark s teammates believe that he is dead and left him behind. The Martian is a science fiction book
that gives readers an idea of how people might be able to colonize Mars and gives readers an idea of
what space is like. The Martian has an author that self published his book, and who used humor and
foreshadowing to keep his readers engaged.
Andy Weir is the author of the book, The Martian, a science fiction book that started out as an ebook
that he published himself. He was born on June 16, 1972 in California ( Biography. ). At the age of

the other two (Weir 154 ). Since Mark is left behind. AL102, which is a sheet located in the airlock

been stranded for about one hundred nineteen sols. In addition to the previous example: We were six
days in when all hell broke loose, so that leaves enough food to last six people for fifty days. I m just
one guy so it will last me 300 days (Weir 8). Readers now know that Mark is going to last for about
300 days on Mars before he runs out of food and possibly die. Foreshadowing can be useful when

Oklahoma City Zoo Research Paper
The Oklahoma City Zoo first opened its doors at Wheeler Park in 1902. It started out as a small
exhibition when they received their first animal donation, a deer fawn. Of course, people flocked to
the zoo. They were amazed that they could stand a few feet away from a live animal without fearing
for their lives. By 1909, the Oklahoma City Zoo had over 100 animals. The zoo was a triumph!
Unfortunately, disaster struck in 1923. A disastrous and tragic flood had occurred at Wheeler Park and
caused the zoo to move to Lincoln Park. The very next year, a fatal fire spread throughout Lincoln
Park. Miraculously, many small areas of the park survived the fire. However, the zoo was
reconstructed on another 17 acres at the park. A director was also hired and new exhibits were built
including the Botanical Garden and the Zoo Amphitheatre. The Oklahoma City Zoo also acquired a
nursing home for the little ones. From that point on, the Oklahoma City Zoo was a grand success! ...

the first zoo to be built in the Southwest, many people out of the state would come to look at the

Aerial Warfare During World War I
During the beginning of World War I aircraft were still primitive and in their infancy of development.
They carried no weapons and were limited on their speed and range. It was not only the limits of this
new technology that hampered its deployment into combat it was also the inadequacies of the pilots.
This meant aircraft needed to be easy to fly so they were built to be less maneuverable and more
stable. Without a direct role in combat they found their first uses during the war as a reconnaissance
tool. It did not take long before pilots started carrying personal weapons which evolved into mounting
machine guns to the aircraft, then the use of bombs. As the aircraft evolved from a reconnaissance

As the trench became more compilated the pilots and their spotter had an increasing difficult time
accuracy relaying enemy and artillery positions. It was because of this that aerial photography was
introduced. It quickly became apparent that cameras where more effective when they were attached to
the aircraft. The photographs where then overlaid onto a map give accuracy information about the
enemy. One such pilot with the Royal Flying Corps named Lt. W. R. Read tells a story of him and his
observer, Jackson, flying over Mons. After the mission was complete they fired a few shots with a rifle
at enemy aircraft. After Jackson ran out of ammunition he asked Read Have you got a revolver, old
boy? Read replied Yes. But no ammo . Jackson then asked for the revolver and for him to fly as close
to the aircraft as he could. He proceeded to throw the revolver at the aircraft s propeller. Afterward
they decided that there was nothing further to do so they headed home. It did not take long before it
became important to down enemy aircraft before they could return home with vital troop and artillery
positions. As it became a real threat of being shot down new technologies were developed. First, they
increased the power of the aircraft engine not only for increased speed, but to increased it could carry
as well. Soon after machine gun mount were added to the side or the upper wing of the aircraft.
Position was important not only so they

Physics, Love, and Richard Feynman Essay
Physics, Love, and Richard Feynman
Introduction
Physics. Love. These two words sum up the entities that Richard Feynman held most important
throughout his entire life. An extraordinary individual, Feynman was able to combine an incredible
mind with an incredible personality to achieve ends bordering on the magical. After Feynman s death
in 1988, physicist Hans Bethe, paraphrasing the mathematician Mark Kac, spoke of two kinds of
geniuses. He explained that the ordinary kind does great things but lets other scientists feel that they
could do the same if only they worked hard enough. The other kind performs magic. Bethe said, A

Before Richard Phillips Feynman was born on May 11, 1918, his father had proclaimed, If it s a boy,
he ll be a scientist (Mehra 1994, p. 2). He was right, although it is interesting to note that Feynman s
sister Joan, nine years his junior, also has a Ph.D. in physics (Feynman 1988). But while Melville
Feynman might have been wrong about predicting the careers of his children based on their sex, he
certainly prepared the young ones well for the scientific occupation. In an interview just before his
death, Feynman was asked if he could name a great influence in his life. He said, My father. Early in
my life, he d tell me about the world, about nature and how interesting it was (Brian 1995, p. 49). The
elder Feynman took his son on long walks in the woods, read to him from the Encyclopedia
Britannica, and encouraged him to conduct experiments with household materials. Throughout
elementary school, Feynman tinkered with toys, clocks, radios, and anything else he could secure for
his laboratory, a workspace in the corner of his bedroom. Besides influencing Feynman to think about
the wonders of science from a young age, Melville taught his son some non scientific lessons that
would greatly impact Feynman s views on certain issues. For example, Feynman learned from his
father to show indifference to authority, and to devalue honors and awards. Melville was in the
uniform business, and knew that there was no difference between a man with a uniform on and

delivery of health care. Therefore, enactment of major health system reforms requires consensus
among Americans on basic values and ethics (Kardos and Allen 1993). Ironically, American beliefs
and values were not allowed a chance to play out in the political maneuvering that led to the passage
of the
ACA of 2010 (see Chapter 13).
The growth of medical science and technology (discussed in Chapter 5) has also played a key role in
shaping the US health care delivery system. Stevens (1971) points out that the technological
revolution has been primarily responsible for bringing medicine into the public domain. Advancement
of technology has influenced other factors, as well, such as medical education, growth of institutions,
and urban development. Hence, American medicine did not emerge as a professional entity until the
beginning of the 20th century, with the progress in biomedical science. Since then, the
US health care delivery system has been a growth enterprise. Debates over issues such as methods of
financing health care, quality improvement, and the appropriate role

The Accidental Billionaires By Ben Mezrich
Facebook was created in 2004 on the Harvard University Campus by one of its own students: Mark
Zuckerberg. First restricted to students of Harvard s University, it is then opened to other American
universities before becoming accessible to all by September 2006. Since June 2015, 1.49 billion of
people are registered on this website. This social network is now part of everyday life for nearly one
fifth of the world population, it has redefined how we connect and communicate in the 21st century. It
is therefore normal that a movie was devoted to its creation and expansion. David Fincher, based on
the book by Ben Mezrich, The Accidental Billionaires , directed the movie.

called The Facebook , a social network site exclusively for Harvard students. He says it could boost
the popularity of Facemash. When the site is launched, the Winklevoss twins and their partner and
friend Narendra, are convinced Zuckerberg stole their idea. They want to sue Mark in justice.
The story, a fiction but based on a true story, is made of flashbacks, and in parallel shows the
development of Facebook and the two trials that oppose Mark Zuckerberg, firstly to the Winklevoss
twins, and secondly to Eduardo. This film emphasizes the creation of this start up that is Facebook,
with its successes and failures. We are going to discuss the beginning of Facebook as an innovative
start up, the role of Mark s different partners: Eduardo Saverin and Sean Parker in the development of
the website, and the depositions and testimony over the ownership and business dealing with various
lawsuits of Facebook from the Winklevoss twins.
A start up is a young company with high growth potential and which requires mostly a fundraiser.
That is what Facebook and the film is about, a brilliant idea, made possible by Mark Zuckerberg and a
fundraiser of $1,000. At the beginning Mark created Facemash to get over his break up with his

The Evolution of Visual Media As all art depends on the vision so the different kinds of art depend on
the different ways in which minds look at things This is a quote from the English philosopher George
Henry Lewes Lewes talks about how art is subjective he says that not everyone sees things the same
which plays a huge role in visual media Visual media can be referred to as pretty much anything you
can look at that carries a message whether it be through pictures or words To begin our journey we are
going to start way back 40000 BCE to be exact
When the average person hears 40000 BCE and thinks about what was happening that time period not
a lot comes to mind This period in time is known as the Upper Paleolithic period The ice age had just
ended leading to a making it easier for the Homo sapiens to live which lead to an increase in the
population of the Homo sapiens which eventually killed off the neanderthals the same homo sapiens
also began to start living together instead of roaming by themselves Modern day scientists and
archaeologists believe that this is where modern day language comes from with the discovery of cave
paintings The concept of cave paintings make a lot of sense now that we understand the time period
better The paintings in the caves depict hunting and animals They are different ways of telling what
animals they hunted and how many they killed during a season this lead to modern day languages

Symptoms And Symptoms Of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (...
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig s
disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the brain and spinal cord nerve cells.
The degeneration of these neurons result in their death, which prevents the brain from initiating
voluntary muscle movement. Patients may not experience the same symptoms throughout the phases,
early symptoms include difficulties swallowing, breathing, speaking, and increasing muscle weakness.
Muscle atrophy occurs and paralysis may result in the later stages of the disease. The cause of ALS is
unknown and although there is no cure, current treatment can halt the progression or possibly reverse
it (ALS Association, 2010). Many people do not think twice about the early signs and symptoms of
ALS, as the disorder progresses, the signs and symptoms can mimic other illnesses. Early signs
usually begin in the upper and lower extremities. The patient appears to be clumsy. As ALS
progresses, all voluntary muscle movements will be affected. The patient will have difficulty
speaking, chewing, swallowing, breathing, and holding their head up. The average person lives 3 to 5
years after diagnosis, death of the motor neurons lead to death of the patient (Mayo Clinic, 2015).
ALS is seen more in men than in women and more in Caucasian s than any other race. Most patients
are diagnosed between the ages of 40 and 75 (CDC, 2014). Case Study Mrs. Suzanne Mayflower is a

The Argument In Favor Of Prayer In Public Schools
For many years, students in public education were familiar with prayer in school. However, after this
practice was challenged by parents in New York State, the Supreme Court ruled on June 26, 1962 that
government endorsed prayer in public schools is unconstitutional. Many Americans still disagree with
this decision and believe in the importance of prayer in schools and that is the constitutional right of
every American. Some of the arguments in favor of prayer in public schools are that it supports
religious freedom in the United States, it acknowledges America s heritage, and it offers benefits to all
of society.
First of all, prayer in school supports the principle of religious freedom on which the United States
was founded. By banning school

  • 2. Mary Oliver Twist Essay Introduction Prostitution looms large in the Victorian consciousness. The image of the fallen woman reflects the Victorian upper classes ideas about sexuality, gender and class. The prostitute is a staple of 19th century fiction. Debate about prostitution is also a reflection of cultural anxiety about urbanization. Victorian ideas about fallenness create the ideological assumptions behind the creation of the Contagious Diseases Acts. Through the control of sexuality, the Acts reinforced existing patterns of class and gender domination. They reflected an acceptance of male sexual license. The double standard allowed male access to fallen women and punished only the women. Fallenness as Literary Motif In Oliver Twist, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cultural beliefs about the fallen woman necessitated that she be victim of a sacrificial death. While her death may have seemed shocking to us, there is no other way that Dickens could have told her story. Nancy is lost beyond redemption and although she had a heart of gold, her fallenness necessitates her death. To have redeemed her would have justified prostitution, or at least acknowledged the fact that it could be a temporary state, and not the road to ruin and a horrible and lonely death. Oliver s mother is also a fallen woman who meets a sacrificial death although her heart is apparently good. Her entire family is also consequently ruined. This reads as particularly tragic since she was not seduced by a rake, but by someone who intended to marry her. No matter; she also had to be sacrificed to fallenness, along with her entire family. It is a cautionary tale. There are two examples of fallenness in Mary Barton. One is Mary Barton herself, who is seduced by dreams of improving her social status via the upper class Carson. Her lust for wealth leaves her at the mercy of this rake, who has no intention of marrying her anyway. The true fallen woman is Mary s aunt Esther. She is destined for the street by her love of clothing, finery, and her class aspirations. When John Barton encounters her on the street again she is the epitome of the streetwalker, bereft of dignity, morality, and the possibility of salvation. Both Oliver Twist an Mary Barton ... • 3. Analysis Of A Doll s House A Doll s House is a famous three act play based in the mid/late 1800s. Written by author Henrik Ibsen, the play focused on the changing times for women of Norway (Ibsen, H, 1992). Throughout the play the typical early 1800s Norwegian family is described one where the husband is dominant in all aspects, and the wife merely follows his requests and tends to the children (M., M., M., A., n.d.). From the beginning of the play to the end, main character Nora gradually hints toward being so unhappy with her situation that she would eventually go against social norms and leave her husband and children to make a life for herself (Ibsen, H, 1992). A Doll s House incorporated several new concepts for that time period such as prose and realism all while employing the themes and structures of a classical tragedy. A Doll s House is so unique because it was one of the first plays to be written in prose. Merriam Webster s definition of prose is, a literary medium distinguished from poetry especially by its greater irregularity and variety of rhythm and its closer correspondence to the patterns of everyday speech (Prose., n.d.). Similarly, prose is simply everyday talk. Most plays were not written in this relatable way that we are used to now. For example, in that time it was uncommon for a play to have phrases like, I am in a silly mood today, as Nora stated (Ibsen, H, 1992). A Doll s House s English was more dumbed down than other plays in that time period, which were all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Comparing The Matrix And Plato s Allegory The Cave Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one , Albert Einstein. This quote from Einstein touches on how reality is not something that one can fully grasp without questioning the reality that you are in presently and both Plato and the Matrix address through their work. In Plato s Allegory of the Cave, he discusses how society controls information so that the people know only what they need to know and nothing more. In the Matrix they show how society has used the control of information to create an illusion of a dreamworld as Morpheus calls it, to crete a false sense of security and happiness. This illusion was supposed to keep the people satisfied so that the citizens would not want to question what was going on and dig ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Which in society you have the choice to question society and look deeper into society and find all the information that has been kept from you. This control of information is used to hide the information that the government does not want to be common information or information that has been misconstrued to uphold their dreamworld that they have created to keep the people happy. Or you can just accept everything as you believe it to be and continue living in the dreamworld that was created for you to live in. The next similarity is when Neal is in a womb like container and he had numerous tubes connected to him, all of these tubes symbolize our need for and ties to society. As an individual we are tied to society through the necessities of life such as; clothing, housing, food, and jobs, and through these same aspects we are contributing to society so it creates a cycle of dependency. We are dependent because we are unable to create most of these things by ourselves without the help of society. for example to build a house in order to get wood or lumber to build it you would need someone to manufacture it so that you would have boards for siding and roofing, and beams and boards for walls and supports. This one necessity is just an example of our dependency on society as an individual. Since we are so dependent on society that corporations know that they can exploit us without us knowing it. An example of this from the matrix would be when Morpheus is apologizing to Neal for having to retrain his mind and he tells him it had to be done, I had no choice. He is talking about how Neal is seen to be the Chosen one and so Morpheus felt like he had no choice but to make Neal retrain his mind even though he is technically too old ... • 5. Essay On Nigga Nigger. A word formed from the Spanish word niger and negro , meaning black. A word that was often used as a racial slur and insults against black people. This word has been used in a derogatory way since the 1800s. It is a term of exclusion and a verbal justification for discrimination. Nowadays in the 21st century, people use the slang word nigga which stems from nigger. Over the years there has been some controversy about who should be allowed to say the slang word nigga. The connection between The Fire This Time and this topic is in Carol Anderson s excerpt from her book, White Rage, Ronald Reagan s key political strategist, Lee Atwater says, You start out in 1954 by saying Nigger, nigger, nigger By 1968 you can t say nigger ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This topic has always been a question people have asked, there is not completely correct answer. Even if there was people would still continue using the word. Anyone who saying nigga should care about if they re allowed to say that word because they should know how the word originated. The first viewpoint is non black people should not be allowed to say nigga because it s racist. Yes, black people do say it casually doesn t mean everyone has that same privilege. For example, Sen. Ben Sasse appeared on HBO s Real Time with Bill Maher to promote his new book, he also invited Maher to visit Nebraska after they talked about how adults in California still dress up for Halloween. We d love to have you work in the fields with us, the senator said to Maher. Work in the fields? Senator, I am a house nigga (Stern). There was a mixture of reactions but Ice Cube was quick to come onto the show to let his opinion be known. There s a lot of guys out there who cross the line because they a little too familiar. Guys that, you know, might have a black girlfriend or two that made them Kool Aid every now and then, and they think they can cross the line. And they can t. There s nothing that a white person can accomplish that makes them become Black. Blackness cannot be earned like a Boy Scout badge. • 6. Compare And Contrast Roots And The Life Of Frederick Douglass Imagine being stuck in chains for six months in your own filth and waste. For some slaves on the middle passage it was exactly like that. This, however, was different than slaves born into slavery, for they didn t have to go through that harsh journey. Both were common to try and escape, few making it. Making the outcomes of Frederick Douglass, who wrote an autobiography, and Kunta Kinte, from the movie Roots, different. While Roots and the narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass have some similarities, the differences of their origins and outcomes are more significant because that s what shaped them who they are. One difference of the book and movie is how they started out becoming a slave. Kunta was a normal boy, just becoming a man in his tribe, when he was taken prisoner. Bowling For Columbine Documentary Essay Documentary reflection The assignment task for Term two was for a small group of people (three), to create a documentary and then each person to write a reflection. Before starting this documentary, we studied the history and development of documentaries. We then looked more into how different documentaries, Spellbound (objective) and Bowling for Columbine (subjective), how each separate style was created and made and how each different style affected people. We ran into conflict when we were choosing what topic for our documentary. We all had many ideas but most of them we had to rule out because they would not be suitable for Year 5 and 6. So soon enough many feel more comfortable in a classroom than other places. We interviewed some grade tens were their bags are. We assumed they would be more honest if they were interviewed somewhere that was familiar and in a sense comforting because if they feel comfortable, they would normally be more truthful. We chose to do a mid shot because when most people are nervous, they tend to move their feet and we didn t want to show them nervous to be interviewed. We also used different camera angles to show different people. Some were smaller, so we lowered the angle and where the camera was positioned. From watching Bowling for Columbine and Spellbound , we decided to choose a subjective documentary because we were all more interested in Bowling for Columbine than Spellbound . When editing we looked at what Bowling for Columbine did with editing things together and things out to get what our point across more affected. When working in a group, we found it hard to balance out the roles, but I think we did. El Niño is caused by a change in the wind patterns. The Pacific trade winds go from east to west and the warm ocean water go the opposite direction. Normally the two forces creates a balance in the middle. When the Pacific trade winds are weaker than usual, the warm ocean water rushes to the east and collides with the the west coast of the coastal cities at the east of the Pacific. Optimism has gotten me through some very tough times. I don t know where I would be without being optimistic. My way of thinking caused those around me to think and act the same way. During times of duress such as conducting field training exercises, my Soldiers notice when I think about the better things to get us through it. • 13. Goldman Sachs Case Study 1. Why Goldman Sachs Needs a Systematic Approach Historically, Goldman Sachs (GS) has been known for its high end performance and reputation as one of the top investment banking firms in the U.S. Placing its customers interests as the first business principle (Groysberg and Snook, 2005, p. 16), GS takes pride in the high quality work and heavy teamwork culture in order to execute the best in class financial services. As a small firm, GS relies on its apprenticeship model, where a new manager will informally learn the job and leadership from an experienced leader (Groysberg and Snook, 2005, p. 7). However, the booming of financial service opportunities, the introduction of the High Tech industry, and the global expansion of the firms in the 1990s reveals that there is a discrepancy in GS s mentorship model and the business goals of the firm. Consequently, GS should consider supplementing the current training method with a more systematic approach to leadership development to prepare its leaders for the changing business contexts. 1.1 Competitive Investment Banking Service From 1990 to 1999, the continuous bull market and the Initial Public Offering (IPO) of many private firms promote the growth of investment banking business. In hemodialysis the amount of dialysis each patient receives is less, compared to at home dialysis and nocturnal dialysis treatments. Kidneys are important organs for survival. Humans cannot filter harmful wastes, fluids, salts, potassium, and phosphorus without kidneys. When diagnosed with renal failure a patient relies on a dialysis machine to adequately remove the harmful wastes from their blood. One of the main ongoing battles between dialysis patients and their providers is adequate fluid control. There are recommendations set out for patients to follow but with weather getting hotter each year, patients are finding it harder to abide by the rules due to excess ... With all the new advancements today, successful outcomes should be the first thing doctors think of, rather than, focusing on the number of patients nephrology can schedule in. Lupus is another concern that nephrology faces which affect all races and has made it more of a challenge for doctors throughout the years. In most cases, patients with end stage renal disease and lupus get separated from the other patients because they are classified as higher risk. • 15. Database Xml And Resource Description Framework ( Rdf ) A triplestore is a non relational database that stores and retrieves triples using semantic queries. Triples store data and are imported and exported using the Resource Description Framework (RDF). A triple is a data entity comprising three components a subject, predicate and object that describe a set of data such as We have shoes . The subject is We , the predicate is have and the object is shoes . Triples provide an easy and flexible way of modeling data that is similar to how the human brain functions. Triples have a semantic structure that can easily represent connections between structured data and free flowing text. Triples form interconnected data networks (graphs), which are easy to read and can represent complex data structures. Information is stored in a triplestore and retrieved using a database query language called SPARQL. SPARQL is a query language for RDF data. It is a basic method for querying remote databases over HTTP. SPARQL can perform graph pattern matching queries and allows users to specify types of accessibility and navigational queries (the shortest distance between two nodes or how two nodes are connected) in triplestores. SPARQL generates powerful queries and reasons intuitively on the data in a triplestore. This also allows computers to reason intuitively on data. The information in triplestores can be stored, accessed and manipulated much easier versus using a relational database exponentially expanding data management and storage ... • 17. Skilled Immigration Controversy The discourse on skilled immigration revolves around the controversial H 1B worker visas, the largest visa program for temporary, skilled immigration to the United States, and the level of the annual cap of such visas. Proponents pushing to raise the annual visa cap, argue that there exists a shortage of domestic labor supply in certain industries. Moreover, these workers enable firms to compete globally by raising their competitiveness, growth, and innovation. Critics of skilled immigration, however, argue that skilled immigrants are not necessarily skilled, and that the principle use of the H 1B visas is for firms to minimize their labor costs, which has the effect of undercutting native wages, and displacing native workers. The H 1B program grants temporary work visas to workers in specialty occupations, most commonly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Firms must pay substantial fees to apply for a worker, and the worker is tied to the firm for the length of their visa (the initial length being three years). King begins by comparing the functionality of a dream to a mirror I ve always used dreams the way you d use a mirror to look at something you couldn t see head on . By using this idea of dreams being like mirrors, King is able to alleviate his writer s block by depicting his dreams directly onto paper. An example would be when King had already written seven to eight hundred pages of his novel which he could not seem to finish. Then later reveals how a nightmare provoked the ending, he states how he woke up frightened yet at the same time relieved he d finished the book. According to King all he had to do at this point was to take his dream and transfer it to paper. Without a doubt, King s personal experiences can justify why he believes dreams are a way that people s minds illustrate the nature of their problems. Or maybe even illustrates the answer to their problem in symbolic language . After reading Stephen King s essay, it is easy to conclude that his dreams are extremely valuable to his writing. King makes it clear that he has a consistent writing habit, but an unpredictable though process. King also believes that a strong writer can dream while awake. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the brain and spinal cord nerve cells. The degeneration of these neurons result in their death, which prevents the brain from initiating voluntary muscle movement. Patients may not experience the same symptoms throughout the phases, early symptoms include difficulties swallowing, breathing, speaking, and increasing muscle weakness. Muscle atrophy occurs and paralysis may result in the later stages of the disease. The cause of ALS is unknown and although there is no cure, current treatment can halt the progression or possibly reverse it (ALS Association, 2010). Many people do not think twice about the early signs and symptoms of ALS, as the disorder progresses, the signs and symptoms can mimic other illnesses.
